A format-compliant configurable encryption framework for access control of video

In this paper, we introduce new methods of performing selective encryption and spatial/frequency shuffling of compressed digital content that maintain syntax compliance after content has been secured. The tools described in this paper have been proposed to the MPEG-4 Intellectual Property Management and Protection (IPMP) standardization group and have been adopted into the MPEG-4 IPMP Final Proposed Draft Amendment (FPDAM) [9]. We will describe the application of the new methods to the protection of MPEG-4 video content in the wireless environment, and illustrate how they are used to leverage established encryption algorithms for the protection of only the information fields in the bitstream that are critical to the reconstructed video quality, while maintaining compliance to the syntax of MPEG-4 video, and thereby reduces the amount of data to be encrypted and guarantees the inheritance of many of the nice properties of the unprotected bitstreams that have been carefully studied and built, such as error resiliency and network friendliness. The encrypted content bitstream works with many existing random access, network bandwidth adaptation, and error control techniques that have been developed for standard-compliant compressed video, thus making it especially suitable for wireless multimedia applications. Standard compliance also allows subsequent signal processing techniques to be applied to the encrypted bitstream.

We present a set of experiments with a video OCR system (VOCR) tailored for video information retrieval and establish its importance in multimedia search in general and for some specific queries in particular. The system, inspired by an existing work on text detection and recognition in images, has been developed using, techniques involving detailed analysis of video frames producing candidate text regions. The text regions are then binarized and sent to a commercial OCR resulting in ASCII text, that is finally used to create search indexes. The system is evaluated using the TREVID data.. We compare the system's performance from an information retrieval perspective with another VOCR developed, using multi-frame integration and empirically demonstrate that deep analysis on individual video frames result in better video retrieval. We also evaluate the effect of various textual sources on multimedia retrieval by combining the VOCR outputs with automatic speech recognition (ASR) transcripts. For general search queries, the VOCR system coupled with ASR sources outperforms the other system by a very large extent. For search queries that involve named entities, especially people names, the VOCR system even outperforms speech transcripts, demonstrating that source selection for particular query types is extremely essential.

Effective and flexible solutions for enabling reduced resource consumption and handling content and associated processing (indexing algorithms) diversity (in terms of location, technical characteristics, execution constraints, requested features) are essential in multimedia management systems. In this paper we present a distributed multimedia retrieval system that enables efficient and effective content processing and access. Though the system’s architecture is a generic one, in order to explain system’s functionalities we will present an instance of the architecture for a video surveillance use case. The proposed system addresses all important topic research concerning this type of systems (architecture, indexing, query) and proposes a novel two steps indexing approach (at acquisition time: implicit indexing and at query time: explicit indexing). This article describes a successful project utilizing various techniques for presenting material in CD-ROM format and identifies the problem areas. Academic conferences are a long-standing and effective form of multimedia communication. In June 1992, Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, hosted the first annual Dartmouth Institute for Advanced Graduate Studies (DAGS) symposium on the topic 'Issues and Obstacles in the Practical Implementation of Parallel algorithms and the Use of Parallel Machines.' The DAGS'92 CD-ROM on parallel computation delivers text, graphic, audio, and video information as an integrated whole, with extensive provisions for random access and hypermedia linking. It is believed that this project provides a model for future conference publications and highlights some of the research issues that must be resolved before similar publications can be quickly and inexpensively produced. The CD-ROM includes a navigation shell that facilitates hierarchical navigation in hyperspace.

The explosion of multimedia data necessitates effective and efficient ways for us to get access to our desired ones. In this article, we draw an analogy between image retrieval and text retrieval and propose a visual phrase-based approach to retrieve images containing desired objects (object-based image retrieval). The visual phrase is defined as a pair of frequently co-occurred adjacent local image patches and is constructed using data mining. We design methods on how to construct visual phrase and how to index/search images based on visual phrase. We demonstrate experiments to show our visual phrase-based approach can be very efficient and more effective than current visual word-based approach.

In this paper, we attempt to develop reliability models for the reliability analyses in distributed multimedia system. We propose two polynomial-time algorithms to compute the multimedia Task Reliability (MTR) and Time-Constraint multimedia Task Reliability (TCMTR) for distributed multimedia system based on Token Ring networks. Two main algorithms, multimedia Task Reliability for Ring (MTRR) and multimedia Task Reliability for Path (MTRP), are used to compute the MTR. For time constraint media access, we extend our proposed algorithms to compute TCMTR.

We present a system for automatic monitoring and timely dissemination of multimedia information to a range of mobile information appliances based on each user's interest profile. multimedia processing algorithms detect and isolate relevant video segments from over twenty television broadcast programs based on a collection of words and phrases specified by the user. content repurposing techniques are then used to convert the information into a form that is suitable for delivery to the user's mobile devices. Alerts are sent using a number of application messaging and network access protocols including email, short message service (SMS), multimedia messaging service (MMS), voice, session initiation protocol (SIP), fax, and pager protocols. The system is evaluated with respect to performance and user experiences. The MediaAlert system provides an effective and low-cost solution for the timely generation of alerts containing personal, business, and security information.

In this paper, we present a method for video category classification using only social metadata from websites like YouTube. In place of content analysis, we utilize communicative and social contexts surrounding videos as a means to determine a categorical genre, e. g. Comedy, Music. We hypothesize that video clips belonging to different genre categories would have distinct signatures and patterns that are reflected in their collected metadata. In particular, we define and describe social metadata as usage or action to aid in classification. We trained a Naive Bayes classifier to predict categories from a sample of 1,740 YouTube videos representing the top five genre categories. Using just a small number of the available metadata features, we compare the classifications produced by our Naive Bayes classifier with those provided by the uploader of that particular video. Compared to random predictions with the YouTube data (21% accurate), our classifier attained a mediocre 33% accuracy in predicting video genres. However, we found that the accuracy of our classifier significantly improves by nominal factoring of the explicit data features. By factoring the ratings of the videos in the dataset, the classifier was able to accurately predict the genres of 75% of the videos. We argue that the patterns of social activity found in the metadata are not just meaningful in their own right, but are indicative of the meaning of the shared video content. The results presented by this project represents a first step in investigating the potential meaning and significance of social metadata and its relation to the media experience.

Digital multimedia content is delivered to homes via the Internet, satellite, terrestrial and cable networks. Scrambling is a common approach used by conditional access systems to prevent unauthorized access to audiovisual data. The descrambling keys are securely distributed to the receivers in the same transmission channel. Their protection is an important part of the key management problem. Although public-key cryptography provides a viable solution, alternative methods are sought for economy and efficiency. Message authentication is an important objective of information security in modern electronic distribution networks. This objective is met by providing the receiver of a message an assurance of the sender's identity. As physical protection such as sealed envelopes is not possible for messages expressed as binary sequences, digital tools have been developed using cryptography. A major limitation of all cryptographic methods for message authentication lies in their use of algorithms with fixed symmetric or public keys. This paper presents a key transport protocol based on secret sharing. Conditional access and message authentication are two important application areas for which the advantages of the proposed protocol are discussed. The protocol eliminates the need for a cipher, yet effectively combines the advantages of symmetric and public-key ciphers. It can be used to build a new key management scheme that allows the service providers to generate different keys for different sets of receivers, and to renew these keys in a convenient way.

The advances of ubiquitous communication infrastructures, the rapid adoption of mobile devices and pervasive computing technologies has allowed e-learning users access to multimedia learning contents in e-learning environments. However, because of the diversity and heterogeneity of the mobile users, their preferences, and the rich multimedia learning content, it is a major challenge for the access of learning content by the desired devices in the e- learning environment to user's satisfaction in terms of QoS demands. In order to alleviate the challenge of learning content mismatch, content adaptation is essential. To this end, we propose an ACO-based multimedia content adaptation approach, which inherits the adoption of ACO-based path selection behavior in the path computation for appropriate learning content customization. We compare our proposed approach with other two competitive algorithms, measure the performance and find that our proposed algorithms outperforms the basic AntNet and Genetic in terms of success rate, latency, runtime comparison and convergence. The performance evaluations are conducted using NetLogo simulation environment. © 2014 IEEE.
