Increasingly, multimedia collections are associated with networked communities consisting of interconnected groups of users who create, annotate, browse, search, share, view, critique and remix collection content. Information arises within networked communities via connections among users and in the course of interactions between users and content. Community-derived information can be exploited to improve user access to multimedia. This paper provides a survey of techniques that make use of a combination of three information sources: community-contributed information (e.g., tags and ratings), network structure and techniques for multimedia content analysis. This triple synergy offers a wide range of opportunities for improving access to multimedia in networked communities. We focus our survey on three areas important for multimedia access: annotation, distribution and retrieval. The picture that emerges is promising: information derived from the social community is remarkably effective in improving access to multimedia content, and participation in networked communities has a high payoff. content-based image retrieval (CBIR) has been studied for nearly two decades since IBM's research on QBIC (Query by Image content) [1]. In the past decade, another related but different area, video fingerprinting, is attracting more and more attention. There are numerous papers published in both areas and researchers from the two areas are sporadically citing results from each other. However, as far as we know, there is no comprehensive comparison between those two areas. This paper attempts to fill in this gap by explicitly discussing the wide array of differences and connections between those two areas. We believe that such a comparative study can facilitate researchers migrating or crosspollinating between the two areas. © 2010 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

The Internet brings us access to multimedia databases with billions of data instances. The massive amount of data available to researchers and application developers brings both opportunities and challenges. In particular, massive amount of data makes data-driven approach feasible, but at the same time, it demands scalable algorithms. In this tutorial we present a range of algorithms and approaches that make it easy/easier to scale our work to Internet-sized collections of multimedia data. The tutorial will start by providing attendees an overview and pointers to the tools that will allow them to scale their work to massive datasets. The tutorial discusses the theoretical and practical problem with large data, applications where large amounts of data are important to consider, types of algorithms that are practical with such large datasets, and examples of implementation techniques that make these algorithms practical. Many real-world examples and results illustrate the tutorial.

The myCOMAND automotive infotainment system enables in-vehicle access to the large variety of information and multimedia content aggregated from public Web services. In this paper, the fuzzy logic approach for preference modeling for user-related personalization and its bindings to a flexible user interface framework are described. Both components are used to create flexible user interface components that visually rank and group any content items based on user preferences. access to the preferred and most important items with only a few interaction steps can avoid distraction when browsing large web-based content collections on smaller screen sizes. Ranking for each information item is annotated based on fuzzy preferences and a shared taxonomy of content categories. Preference values are implicitly learned from user interaction or can be set explicitly by the user. In particular, a use case for browsing Internet radio stations is described. Items are ranked according to the user's preferences and item novelty and arranged in a carousel-like layout. A visual overview mode helps to quickly review the structure of large content collections.

multimedia content is a dominant fraction of Internet usage today. At the same time, there is significant heterogeneity in video presentation modes and operating conditions of Internet-enabled devices that access such content. Users are often interested in the content, rather than the specific sources or the formats. The host-centric format of the current Internet does not support these requirements naturally. Neither do the recent data-centric naming proposals, since they rely on naming content based on raw byte-level hashing schemes. We argue that to meet these requirements, enabling content retrieval mechanisms to name and query directly for the underlying information is a good way forward. In addition to decoupling content from available sources and transfer protocols, these "information-aware names" or InfoNames explicitly decouple the information from content presentation factors as well. We envision an InfoName Resolution System (IRS) to resolve location based on InfoNames, while taking into account the operating conditions of devices. In this demo, we present an application to show how InfoNames can serve as presentation-invariant and portable names to fetch video content independent of device capabilities and resource constraints.

Building a large-scale digital preservation archives system (LDPAS) for long-term access is a challenging endeavor. The three most significant system requirements contributing to that challenge are the scalability of the system, accommodation of heterogeneous digital holdings, and the evolvability of both the constituting technologies and the data formats in storage. The amount of digital-born materials requiring long-term preservation and access is overwhelming due to the fast pace of information technology and its widespread utilization in government, business corporations, academic institutions, and the general public. Compounding to the data volume challenge is the heterogeneity of the data, which range from the products of office automation and geospatial images, to multimedia artifacts. Storing and preserving digital objects must be accomplished in a way that allows access to the objects independently of the platform technology and software applications used to create these objects. As the technologies change rapidly, the LDPAS must accommodate the changes to its benefit, while also increasing in scale. A successful LDPAS must be able to adapt to the two-fold evolutionary demands. The evolution of the system software with time is the norm in any large-scale long-term system. But, even more important is the system's capability to cope with the evolution of the very software applications that generated the digital objects archived within it. In this paper, we propose an architecture of a system of content Servers, which can scale with the data volume growth, continually sustain evolution in the face of technological change, and provide different levels of service to the different kinds of users accessing the LDPAS. We describe the concept, components and services of a content Server in the context of digital archiving, serviceoriented architecture (SOA) and the Open Archive Information System (OAIS) reference model. The phenomenal growth of multimedia content on the web over the last couple of decades has paved the way for content management systems integrating intelligent information retrieval and indexing techniques. Also, in order to improve the performance of retrieval techniques while searching and navigating the database, many relevance feedback algorithms are implemented, in which the subjective semantics of individual users are included in the image search. Following the recent developments in social networking, there is an emerging interest to share experiences online with friends using multimedia data. As the experiences to be shared among social peers vary from a simple social gathering to a tourism visit with a group of peers, there is a critical need for intelligent content management tools driven by a social perspective. Addressing the challenges related to socially-driven content management, the objective of this paper is twofold. First, we investigate techniques to intelligently structure multimedia content to enable efficient browsing of photo albums. The proposed structuring schemes exploit EXIF metadata, visual content and social peer relationships. Second, we propose a retrieval model based on social context to identify users with similar interests. The retrieval model aims to allow increased interaction among social peers. The proposed techniques have been evaluated against tourism pictures captured across Europe. Copyright 2010 ACM.

This paper is looking into the possibility of multimedia content distribution over multiple mobile platforms forming wireless peer - to - peer networks. State of the art mobile networks are centralized and base station or access point oriented. Current developments break ground for device to device communication. In this paper we will introduce a mobile application that runs on Symbian as well as iPhone/iPod devices and is able to exchange multimedia content in a point to multipoint fashion. The mobile application coined PictureViewer can convey pictures from one source device to many neighboring devices using a wireless 802.11 network together with network coding and user cooperation. The advantage of network coding in this context is that the source devices only need a minimal amount of knowledge about the sinks received packets and therefore only a minimal amount of feedback is needed to ensure reliable data delivery. © 2010 ACM.

There has been considerable work on the architecture and protocols of wireless networks since the inception of the ALOHA system and the DARPA packet radio network approximately 40 years ago. However, the design choices that have been made for wireless networks are derivatives of protocols designed for wireline networks and are such that: (a) channel access is either very inefficient and unable to support multimedia traffic across multiple hops, or requires complex clock synchronization to support scheduling schemes based on time division of the channel and dynamic channel reuse;(b) the routes established in wireless networks have no correlation to the transmission schedules used over the wireless links forming those routes, which reduces the efficiency with which flows can be forwarded;and (c) the mechanisms used for information dissemination in wireless ad hoc networks do not scale with the size or dynamics of the network. In this talk, I argue that the way in which naming, addressing, routing and channel access are done in wireless networks must be redefined from the ground up in order for these networks to scale and perform much more effiiciently than they currently do. This redesign must take into account the facts that: (a) nodes do not attach to the network at static points and need not be grouped in stable sets;(b) wireless links do not operate in isolation from one another;(c) establishing transmission schedules and routes are intimately related to one another;(d) flooding must be eliminated in the signaling of routing protocols;and (e) routing and channel access protocols do not have to use static identifiers that have no relationship to their operation. I summarize recent results on automatic incremental routing (AIR) and harmonic channel access, which follow the above design guidelines. AIR attains efficient routing in large networks without the use of traditional routing tables or flooding, and supports unicast and multicast routing using the same signal

content authentication is a critical issue for online multimedia systems. A new content authentication scheme based on optimal binary search tree (OBST) was proposed and evaluated to reduce the authentication cost. A balanced tree based approach, however, can not achieve optimal authentication cost when each element is accessed with different probabilities, so it's not appropriate for a practical online multimedia system in which access of the contents is expected to obey Zipf's law. We prove that an OBST based scheme achieves minimized expected authentication cost;we also compare the authentication cost of our scheme to that of a binary search tree (BST) and a red-black tree. © 2010 IEEE.
