The increasing popularity of ubiquitous, interconnected computing devices such as laptops, PDAs, and 3G mobile phones is fostering the emergence of environments where people access their personal information, corporate data and public resources "anytime" and "anywhere". Context, an important concept that can be any information regarding the situation and environment, is often exploited by human beings for communications and actions. Context-aware services have been proposed in the computing field to adapt system behaviors based on the retrieved context data. Although different context-aware systems have been presented in literature, this paper moves one step further by building an adaptive wireless multimedia system with context-awareness using ontology-based models. The proposed system can adapt its behaviors according to the changes of various context data. First, it chooses the appropriate video content based on the retrieved static context data such as user's profile, location, time, and weather forecast. Then, dynamic media adaption is performed to greatly improve the video quality perceived by the end user by adapting to various context data such as varying wireless channel quality, available energy of the end equipment, network congestion and application Quality of Services (QoS). To verify the effectiveness of proposed system, a test bench and its experimental results are also described.

The vision of Universal multimedia access (UMA) and Universal multimedia Experience (UME) has driven research in the multimedia community for a long time. Implementing content adaptation frameworks to satisfy heterogeneous types of constraints is among the main requirements for UMA and UME. At the core of these frameworks lies the adaptation decision engine, which computes the appropriate adaptation plans. Though much research has already been done in this domain, the problem of semantic constraints has generally been neglected. This paper addresses the problem of selecting the optimal adaptation operation to satisfy semantic constraints while maximizing the utility of the adapted video. To this end, we define a utility function that computes a value for each possible adaptation operation. We represent our utility function using the MPEG-21 Digital Item Adaptation (DIA) tools. This facilitates the integration of semantic constraints with other types of constraints in MPEG-21 Universal Constraint Description format. Copyright 2010 ACM.

Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) is a third generation mobile communication systems that supports wireless wideband multimedia applications. The objective of this paper is to present a new model for non-intrusive prediction of H. 264 encoded video quality over UMTS networks and to illustrate their application to video quality monitoring and adaptation in mobile wireless streaming services. First, we present an efficient regression model for predicting video quality non-intrusively for all content types. The model is predicted from a combination of a set of objective parameters in the application and physical layer in terms of the Mean opinion Score (MOS). The application layer parameters considered are the content type, sender bitrate and frame rate and the physical layer parameters are the block error rate modeled with 2-state Markov model for a mean burst length of 1.75. The performance of the proposed metric is evaluated with unseen dataset with good prediction accuracy. Second, we illustrate the application of the model in mobile streaming services by presenting a new Sender Bitrate (SBR) adaptation scheme at pre-encoding stage that is Quality of Experience (QoE) driven. The scheme was tested and evaluated in the NS2 based UMTS simulation network. Extensive simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed adaptation scheme in terms of the MOS and especially at the UMTS network bottleneck access where perceived video quality is most affected. The proposed scheme was responsive to available network bandwidth and congestion and adapted the SBR accordingly maintaining acceptable quality in terms of the MOS. The proposed scheme has applications in network planning and content provisioning for network/service providers.

In this paper, we present a novel method of steganography system based on CDMA (Code Division Multiple access) approach having regard to perceptibility of stego-image. Also additional extraction algorithms were designed due to enhancing of secret message decomposition. As it will be shown later, aptly imposed features of CDMA techniques are in consonance with imperatives claimed upon steganography systems.

Digital television has been evolving for several years. Recent evolutions in the technology have made it possible to deliver digital television services over fixed and mobile broadband network, which is commonly known as IPTV. IPTV is a system in which digital television services are provided using internet protocol over a network. The deployment of Internet Protocol-based television (IPTV) over different broadband access networks is made possible by the new types of broadband access networks and improved media coding algorithms. Many service providers have started to deploy triple play services over DSL including IPTV as an essential service component. However, each service in the triple play bundle (e.g. IPTV, VoIP) has its own unique service-control framework and operations and billing support systems, increasing the complexity of the overall triple play service architecture therefore, there is a need of flexible network architecture. In this paper we discuss about the features of IPTV along with the integration of IMS and IPTV service platforms to reduce network complexity and provide a flexible network for new services.

The introduction of IPTV and the availability of video content online are dramatically changing broadband data demand. Today the average daily broadband consumer data consumption is approximately 32 kbps. This demand is forecasted to quintuple over the next five years due primarily to the integration of IPTV into the broadband service bundle and the consumer's evolving video-watching behavior. Recent data indicates that 86% of broadband users watch video content on line at least once a month.1 Data also shows a shift from scheduled content viewing to time shifted or on-demand video watching. Integration of broadband services has enabled value-added capabilities such as transferring video content between networked devices, social networking while viewing video online, and caller id displayed on a video image. Since the terrestrial approach integrates various services and distributes the higher bandwidth per subscriber over a single transport mechanism (ADSL or cable), consumers of satellite broadband services expect to receive similarly bundled services and capabilities through their home satellite service. What matters is the consumer's multimedia experience and the economics involved, not the transport mechanism. This paper reviews the key metrics that should be used to compare terrestrial and satellite broadband services with this consumer perspective in mind. It also suggests potential satellite architectures that can provide a broadband experience comparable to the terrestrial services. © 2010 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. The growing capacity of computers, the abundance of digital cameras and the increased connectivity of the world all point to large digital multimedia archives. They include images and videos from the World Wide Web, museum objects, flowers, trademarks, and views from everyday life. The faster they grow, the more prominently needed is the efficient access to the content of the images and videos. In this paper we have given important step of feature extraction, will be discussed in detail such as color, shape and texture information, particularly paying attention to discriminatory power and invariance. Then, we focus on the concepts of indexing and genre classification as intermediate step to sort the data. We pay attention to (interactive) ways to perform browsing and retrieval by means of information visualization and relevance feedback. Methods are being discussed to localize the retrieved objects in images. We adopt a hybrid approach for such text extraction by exploiting a number of characteristics of text blocks in color images and video frames. Our system detects both caption text as well as scene text of different font, size, color and intensity. Such texts are used for retrieval of video clips based on any given keyword. content-Based Image And Video Retrieval addresses the basic concepts and techniques for designing content-based image and video retrieval systems.

multimedia information and embedded systems are two major technological advances that have significantly changed the way people interact with systems and information in recent years. In this context, audio proves to be the most advantageous media for interacting with embedded systems and their content. Advantages include: hands-free operation;unattended interaction;and simple, cheap devices for capture and playback. The use of embedded systems to seek information stored locally or on the web points up several difficulties inherent in the nature of multimedia-information signals. These difficulties are especially evident when palmtop or deeply embedded devices are used for such purposes. Developing a set of digital-signal-processing- based algorithms for extracting audio information is a primary step toward providing user-friendly access to multimedia information and developing powerful communication interfaces. The algorithms aim to extract semantic and syntactic information from audio signals, including voice. Extracted audio features are employed to access information in multimedia databases, as well as to index it. More extensive, higher-level information, such as audio-source identification (speaker identification) and genre (in the case of music), must be extracted from the audio signal. One basic task involves transforming audio into symbols (e.g. music transformed into a score, speech transformed into text) and transcribing symbols into audio (e.g. score transformed into musical audio, text transformed into speech). The purpose is to search for and access any kind of multimedia information by means of audio. To attain these results, digital audio-processing, digital speech-processing, and soft-computing methods need to be integrated. Neural networks are used as classifiers and fuzzy logic is used for making smart decisions.

The WiMedia specifications for high data rate ultra-wideband communication is an emerging protocol with its first products available on the market. One use case is wireless networking based on the Internet Protocol. conference rooms or offices can be equipped with access points to provide high speed Internet access. Our intention is to establish WiMedia wireless networks in public transportation vehicles, such as aircrafts, trains or buses to reduce costs and enable flexible cabin architecture. Wireless resource planning for node placement and resource allocation is of great interest to achieve high efficiency. Existing resource management algorithms, many have been proposed for the IEEE 802.11 protocol families, can not be applied to our networks, due to the unique MAC protocol of WiMedia specifications, which require different planning approaches. In this paper a resource management approach for this new networks is presented. It uses integer linear programming to identify the optimal placement of access points and the channel allocation in an integrated model. Specific conditions, mainly the beacon group size and extended beacon group size of the network nodes are taken into account, according to the standard. The algorithm was implemented and tested to verify correctness in critical scenarios.
