Peer to peer based live multimedia streaming systems over the Internet have been gaining popularity these days because they can be easily deployed without router based IP multicast capabilities. However, the peers frequently join and leave the system so that some peers may experience service disruptions, which degrade the overall quality and reputation of the services. In this situation, a hybrid approach is considered as a viable alternative. In the hybrid approach, the service providers deploy multiple proxies all over the Internet and make them constitute a core tree in the peer to peer system so that the proxies behave as stable nodes that are always on. Thus the system quality can increase. In this paper, we propose a centralized core tree construction scheme based on various optimization algorithms. The scheme focuses on constructing a core tree that maximizes the overall quality of the system. Because the real time multimedia streaming systems have higher QoS requirements than the content distribution such as Akamai, we take into account not only the locations of the proxies but also the topology formed by the proxies. The general framework can obtain a tree for arbitrary performance metrics not only for a specific metric such as minimum delay. Through simulations over diverse scenarios, we show that our optimization based approaches can provide a better core tree than some greedy heuristic approaches.

Many military research efforts have concentrated on how to allow war-fighters to take advantage of all available information within the battlefield in a rapid and flexible manner. As a result, the development of the Global Information Grid (GIG) was the key enabler for this process; hence, adding to the development of the mobile networking part of the GIG, the concept of the Mobile Ad hoc Network of Networks (MANoN) is introduced. This paper proposes a novel access control mechanism achieving the prevention essential; defined in the ITU-T M.3400 security management recommendation to manage securely the future of military Network-Centric Warfare (NCW). The authors will employ formal description as a method of handling both sequential and parallel composition in flexible timely constrains, in addition, this technique will be evaluated using the Network Simulator (NS-2) to provide and check whether access control requirements are met in a comprehensive manner.

We present topic-regression multi-modal Latent Dirich-let Allocation (tr-mmLDA), a novel statistical topic model for the task of image and video annotation. At the heart of our new annotation model lies a novel latent variable regression approach to capture correlations between image or video features and annotation texts. Instead of sharing a set of latent topics between the 2 data modalities as in the formulation of correspondence LDA in, our approach introduces a regression module to correlate the 2 sets of topics, which captures more general forms of association and allows the number of topics in the 2 data modalities to be different. We demonstrate the power of tr-mmLDA on 2 standard annotation datasets: a 5000-image subset of COREL and a 2687-image LabelMe dataset. The proposed association model shows improved performance over correspondence LDA as measured by caption perplexity.

Digital television has been evolving for several years. Recent evolutions in the technology have made it possible to deliver digital television services over fixed and mobile broadband network, which is commonly known as IPTV. IPTV is a system in which digital television services are provided using internet protocol over a network. The deployment of Internet Protocol-based television (IPTV) over different broadband access networks is made possible by the new types of broadband access networks and improved media coding algorithms. Many service providers have started to deploy triple play services over DSL including IPTV as an essential service component. However, each service in the triple play bundle (e.g. IPTV, VoIP) has its own unique service-control framework and operations and billing support systems, increasing the complexity of the overall triple play service architecture therefore, there is a need of flexible network architecture. In this paper we discuss about the features of IPTV along with the integration of IMS and IPTV service platforms to reduce network complexity and provide a flexible network for new services.

content-based image retrieval (CBIR) is a difficult area of research in multimedia systems. The research has proved extremely difficult because of the inherent problems in proper automated analysis and feature extraction of the image to facilitate proper classification of various objects. An image may contain more than one objects and to segment the image in line with object features to extract meaningful objects and then classify it in high-level like table, chair, car and so on has become a challenge to the researchers in the field. The latter part of the problem, the gap between low-level features like color, shape, texture, spatial relationships and high-level definitions of the images is called the semantic gap. Until we solve these problems in an effective way, the efficient processing and retrieval of information from images will be difficult to achieve. In this paper we explore the possibilities of how relevance feedback can help us solve this problem of semantic gap although lot of works have already been done using the concepts of relevance feedback in this area. This would enable efficient image retrieval for internet of the future.

With rapid advances in video processing technologies, video data increased rapidly and becomes popular in our daily life for both professional and consumer applications, e.g., surveillance, education, entertainment. Such needs require the data management system not only can store and access the video content, but also able to optimize the queries with expensive video predications in an effective and efficient way. In previous research literature, query optimizations in relational database systems (RDBMS) are often based on disk I/O cost of involved operations. However, for a query that contains expensive video predicates, traditional cost estimation model does not work well. Although researchers have proposed some approaches which can solve the problem in certain situations, there are still some unresolved issues, and it needs further optimization. In this paper, motivate from a real-world large supermarket's business data and video surveillance data management scenario, through considering the characteristics of video data and its expensive processing, we propose a novel query optimization approach that caches operators' results and reconstructs the join order based estimation for attribute cardinality. This approach reduces the invoking times of expensive video predicate in a greater degree and gives a better solution for mixed query optimization which contains traditional data types and large object operations. The experiment result is satisfactory while compare with existing expensive predicates query optimization methods.

Nowadays, a new security problem is arising in intranets. The threats from inside an organization account for a rapidly increasing proportion of losses. A new concept of “File View” is proposed to resolve this security problem in intranets, which uses the structure of database view for reference. Because of the differences between file system and database, there are some challenges in extending this proposal to file systems. This paper proposes an algorithm to protect confidential information in file system from being accessed by illegal users. First, the paper proposes an algorithm as “File View access Control Algorithm”(FVACA) which revises the algorithms proposed in previous work. Then, to verify the feasible of this algorithm, this paper suggests to realize it on “Microsoft Office Word” which is one of the most popular digital formats used in intranets. For protecting the confidential information in file view, a method based on the compound format of “MSWord” is adopted. Finally, the experiment based on “MS Word” shows that FVACA is effective on protecting content from being accessed by illegal users.

The increasing popularity of ubiquitous, interconnected computing devices such as laptops, PDAs, and 3G mobile phones is fostering the emergence of environments where people access their personal information, corporate data and public resources "anytime" and "anywhere". Context, an important concept that can be any information regarding the situation and environment, is often exploited by human beings for communications and actions. Context-aware services have been proposed in the computing field to adapt system behaviors based on the retrieved context data. Although different context-aware systems have been presented in literature, this paper moves one step further by building an adaptive wireless multimedia system with context-awareness using ontology-based models. The proposed system can adapt its behaviors according to the changes of various context data. First, it chooses the appropriate video content based on the retrieved static context data such as user's profile, location, time, and weather forecast. Then, dynamic media adaption is performed to greatly improve the video quality perceived by the end user by adapting to various context data such as varying wireless channel quality, available energy of the end equipment, network congestion and application Quality of Services (QoS). To verify the effectiveness of proposed system, a test bench and its experimental results are also described.

With the prevalence of mobile devices that are equipped with wireless Internet capabilities and Global Positioning System (GPS) functionality, the creation and access of user-generated content are extended to users on the go. Such content are tied to real world objects, in the form of geospatial annotations, and it is only natural that these annotations are visualized using a map-based approach. However, viewing maps that are filled with annotations could hinder the serendipitous discovery of data, especially on the small screens of mobile devices. This calls for a need to manage the annotations. In this paper, we introduce a mobile application, MobiTOP, which enable users to create multimedia geospatial annotations and employs a map-based visualization for users to explore the annotations. We propose the adoption of clustering approaches to manage the volume annotations on the map. Two approaches of clustering techniques, namely incremental clustering and DBScan (Density based spatial clustering applications with noise), are proposed and compared with a baseline approach in our evaluation. Implications of our findings are discussed.

Recent two-way collaboration prototypes attempt to improve natural interactivity, correct eye contact and gaze direction, and media sharing using novel configurations of projectors, screens, and video cameras. These systems are often afflicted by video cross-talk where the content displayed for viewing by the local participant is unintentionally captured by the camera and delivered to the remote participant. Prior attempts to reduce this cross-talk purely in hardware through various forms of multiplexing (e.g., temporal, wavelength (color), polarization) have performance and cost limitations. In this work, careful system characterization and subsequent signal processing algorithms allow us to reduce video cross-talk. The signals themselves are used to detect temporal synchronization offsets which then allow subsequent reduction of the cross-talk signal. Our software-based approach enables the effective use of simpler hardware and optics than prior methods. Results show substantial cross-talk reduction in a system with unsynchronized projector and camera.
