An IPTV system that transmits contents through an IP network needs to adopt a conditional access system allowing only authorized subscribers to view premium content as in other Pay-TV systems. IPTV systems adopting one of conditional accesssystems provided by a specific major vendor have a difficulty in changing the conditional access system loaded on a set-top box or on a removable hardware device, such as Smart card. However, a software download scheme through an IP network enables an IPTV set-top box to change the existing conditional access system in a secure way. This paper proposes a dynamic conditional access system for an IPTV set-top box that securely downloads cryptographic software and dynamically executes the cryptographic software when it is required. Therefore, the proposed system enables an IPTV multimedia system to provide seamless conditional access services to IPTV subscribers without rebooting the IPTV set-top box or replacing a hardware security device while changing the running cryptographic software.

The Web is catalyzing a transition from PC-based software and file systems to Internet-based applications and Web services. We aim at the combination of multimedia computing and Web technologies (Web Services) together that supports uniform naming, protection, and access for multimediacontent objects stored by Web services to accomplish distributed computing. At a high level, it creates an integrated file and object system from heterogeneous, multimediacontent objects dispersed across the Internet. Based on this fact, we proposed a novel framework of distributed multimedia computing in this paper. In this framework, the concept of workflow which can describe business processes logically is introduced. Some experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Efficient file searching is an essential feature in P2P systems. While many current approaches use brute force techniques to search files by meta information (file names, extensions or user-provided tags), the interest is in implementing techniques that allow content-based search in P2P systems. Recently, clustering techniques have been used for searching text documents to increase the efficiency of document discovery and retrieval. Integrating such techniques into P2P systems is important to enhance searching in P2P file sharing systems. While some effort has been taken for content-based searching for text documents in P2P systems, there has been few research work for applying these techniques to multimediacontent in P2P systems. In this paper, we introduce two P2P content-based clustering techniques for multimedia documents. These techniques are an adaptation of the existing Class-based Semantic Search algorithm for text documents. The proposed algorithms have been integrated into a JXTA-based Overlay P2P platform, and evaluation results are provided. The JXTA-Overlay together with the considered clustering techniques is thus very useful for developing P2P multimedia applications requiring efficient searching of multimediacontents in peer nodes.

Large-scale multimedia semantic concept detection requires real-time identification of a set of concepts in streaming video or large image datasets. The potentially high data volumes of multimediacontent, and high complexity associated with individual concept detectors, have hindered the practical deployment of many current solutions. In this paper, we present a summary of our work in building systems and applications for resource adaptive semantic concept detection in multimedia using large-scale distributed stream mining systems. We construct such concept detection applications as a hierarchical topology of individual concept detectors, and deploy them on distributed processing infrastructure. We then focus on dynamically configuring individual concept detectors to meet system imposed resource constraints while minimizing a penalty defined in terms of the misclassification cost. We present multiple centralized and distributed algorithms for this configuration, and describe the implemented application and system. We also verify through simulations that significant improvement in terms of accuracy of classification can be achieved through our approach.

In this paper, we address the problem of collaborative video caching in mobile ad-hoe networks. We consider network portraying static video server with wired interface to gateway node that is equipped with wireless interfaces, other nodes are requiring access to the video streams that is stored at video server. In order to reduce the average access latency as well as enhance the video accessibility, efficient video caching placement and replacement strategies are crucial at some of the distributed intermediate nodes across the network. Virtual backbone caching nodes will be elected by executing caching placement algorithm after running the routing protocol phase. The simulation results indicate that the proposed collaborative aggregate cache mechanism can significantly improve the video QoS in terms of packet loss and average packet delay.
