CDMA is interference limited multiple access system. Power control is an effective way to reduce co-channel interference. Consequently, it can improve the system capacity. CDMA employs fast closed-loop power control in uplink in which signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) is estimated. Transmitting power is adjusted by comparing estimated SIR with desired SIR. In this paper a modified fixed step power control algorithm has been proposed, which can improve the performance of a CDMA system. The proposed algorithm produced a faster convergence and low outage probability compared to other power control algorithms discussed and analyzed to maintain the desired SIR target.

Reliable content-based copy detection algorithms (CBCD) are at the core of effective multimedia data management and copyright enforcement systems. CBCD techniques focus on detecting videos that are identical to or transformed versions of an original video. The fast growth of online video sharing services challenges state-of-the-art copy detection algorithms as they need to be: able to deal with vast amounts of data, computationally efficient and robust to a wide range of image and audio transformations. In this paper, we present two related multimodal CBCD algorithms that effectively fuse audio and video information by means of a compact multimodal signature based on audio and video global descriptors. We validate our algorithms with a benchmark database (MUSCLE-VCD) and obtain over a 14% relative improvement with respect to state-of-the-art systems. In addition, we illustrate the performance of our approach in a video view-count re-ranking task with YouTube data. Copyright 2009 ACM.

QoS-oriented content delivery is an important component in en-learning systems. In this paper we study the object placement problem in the parallel-access context for QoS-oriented content delivery. The problem is formulated in terms of bandwidth maximization and further proved to be equivalent to the Fault Tolerant Facility Location Problem (FTFL). In this problem the bandwidth that violates the triangle inequality is measured by a cost function which forms a metric when the shortest-path routing is deployed. Though there have been efficient UFL algorithms with good performance guarantees, the challenge of the FTFL Problem arises due to the conflict of its connectivity requirement (multiple distinct connections) and cost minimization (which leads to identical connections with the minimum cost). We investigate possible solutions for addressing this conflict after giving an overview of the existing techniques. Extension of the problem to the context of QoE-aware multimedia delivery which has important applications in e-learning systems is also discussed.

The ever-increasing density of computer storage devices has allowed the average user to store enormous quantities of multimediacontent, and a large amount of this content is usually music. Current search techniques for musical content rely on meta-data tags which describe artist, album, year, genre, etc. Query-by-contentsystems allow users to search based upon the acoustical content of the songs. Recent systems have mainly depended upon textual representations of the queries and targets in order to apply common string-matching algorithms. However, these methods lose much of the information content of the song and limit the ways in which a user may search. We have created a music recommendation system that uses Self-Organizing Maps to find similarities between songs while preserving more of the original acoustical content. We build on the design of the recommendation system to create a musical query-by-content system. We discuss the weaknesses of the naive solution and then implement a quasi-supervised design and discuss some preliminary results.

The evolution of IP video systems has resulted in unprecedented access to a wide range of video material for consumers via IPTV and Web delivery. Retrieval technologies help users find relevant content, but suffer from a paucity of reliable content descriptions. In this paper, we describe the large scale content analysis engine (CAE) which is designed to facilitate content based video retrieval, as well as a number of other applications such as content repurposing, video browsing, discovering content relationships, and fine-grained content personalization. A scalable system is presented to handle video from broadcast, enterprise and web sources for applications including IPTV and mobile video. Media processing includes shot boundary detection, automatic speech recognition, face detection, clustering of shots and faces, speaker segmentation, closed caption alignment, concept detection, and transcoding. Metadata ingest, augmentation and delivery using a standards-based approach enable the CAE to serve a range of content processing applications. Copyright 2009 ACM.
