Fuelled by the rapid expansion of broadband connectivity and increasing interest in online multimedia-rich applications, the growth of digital multimedia content has skyrocketed. Among others, this growth is compounding the need for more effective methods for searching multimedia information. The automated web search engines that are currently used rely only on text descriptions and as a result provide matches of poor quality in case of multimedia content. The services of a multimedia search engine are therefore a possibility that the internet users still lack. Thus, the scope of this paper is to present an implementation approach for a personalized web-based multimedia search engine in the Java programming language. This approach combines the characteristics of the current search engines as well as new innovative features which guarantee at the same time the system's quick response and better search results. In this paper the reader can find an analytical presentation of all the components required to form a multimedia search engine, as well as indications on how to implement key algorithms and functions.

The Web is catalyzing a transition from PC-based software and file systems to Internet-based applications and Web services. We aim at the combination of multimedia computing and Web technologies (Web Services) together that supports uniform naming, protection, and access for multimedia content objects stored by Web services to accomplish distributed computing. At a high level, it creates an integrated file and object system from heterogeneous, multimedia content objects dispersed across the Internet. Based on this fact, we proposed a novel framework of distributed multimedia computing in this paper. In this framework, the concept of workflow which can describe business processes logically is introduced. Some experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Volume visualization with random data access poses significant challenges. While tiling techniques lead to simple implementations, they are not well suited for cases where the goal is to access arbitrarily located subdimensional dataseis (e.g., displaying a "band" of several paralllel lines of arbitrary orientation from a 2D image;being able to display an arbitrary 2D planar "cut" from a 3D volume). Significant effort has been devoted to volumetric data compression, with most techniques proposing to tile volumes into cuboid subvolumes to enable random access. In this paper we show that, in cases where subdimensional datasets are accessed, this leads to significant transmission inefficiency. As an alternative, we propose novel server-client based data representation and retrieval methods which can be used for fast random access of low dimensional data from high dimensional datasets. In this paper, 2D experiments are shown but the approach can be extended to higher dimensional datasets. We use multiple redundant tilings of the image, where each tiling has a different orientation. We discuss the 2D rectangular tiling scheme and two main algorithm components of such 2D system, namely, (i) a fast optimal search algorithm to determine which tiles should be retrieved for a given query and (ii) a mapping algorithm to enable efficient encoding without interpolation of rotated tiles. In exchange for increased server storage, we demonstrate that significant reductions, a factor of 2 in bandwidth reduction, can be achieved relative to conventional square tiling techniques. The transmission rate can be reduced even more by allowing more storage overhead. This method speeds up the random access procedure and saves memory on the user's side. Here we use the 2D example to retrieve random lines (or sets of lines) from a 2D image. Packet classification has become an important problem to solve in modern network processors used in networking embedded systems such as routers. algorithms for matching incoming packets from the network to pre-defined rules, have been proposed by a number of researchers. Current software-based packet classification techniques have low performance, prompting many researchers to move their focus to new architectures encompassing both software and hardware components. Some of the newer hardware architectures exclusively utilize Ternary content Addressable Memory (TCAM) to improve the performance of rule matching. However, this results in systems with high power consumption. TCAM consumes a high amount of power due to the fact that it reads the entire memory array during every access, much of which is unnecessary. In this paper, we propose LOP, a novel SRAM-based architecture where incoming packets are compared against parts of all rules simultaneously until a single matching rule is found for the compared bits in the packets. This method LOP significantly reduces power consumption as only a segment of the memory is compared against the incoming packet. Despite the additional time penalty to match a single packet, parallel comparison of multiple packets can improve throughput beyond that of the TCAMapproaches, while consuming significantly low power. Nine different benchmarks were tested in two classification systems, with results showing that LOP architectures provide high lookup rates and high throughput, and low power consumption. Compared with a state-of-the-art TCAM implementation (throughput of 495 Million Search per Second (Msps)) in 65nm CMOS technology, on average, LOP saves 43% of energy consumption with a throughput of 590Msps. Color features of an image are the most widely used features in content-based image retrieval (CBIR) systems. Specifically histogram-based algorithms are considered to be effective for color image indexing. Color histogram describes the global distribution of pixels of an image which is insensitive to variations in scale and easy to calculate. However, the high dimensionality of feature vectors results in high computation cost and space cost. In this paper, we mainly focus on color features and propose a novel method named color frequency sequence difference (CFSD) to express color images, which only has one numerical value in one color channel. The CFSD is combined with information entropy to realize indexing. The novel approach is described in detail and compared with color histogram method presented in the literature. The experiment is finished and shows that the method proposed in this paper is effective and efficient.

Much public attention has recently been drawn to the use of content identification technologies to filter or block the unauthorized publication of copyrighted material on Internet sites, as part of the content industry's effort to recover ground in the fight against Internet piracy. However, the underlying fingerprinting algorithms that are broadly used for content identification have actually been in existence for some time, and have been successfully deployed in numerous applications that enrich and enhance consumers' experiences of all types of multimedia content. To date, most of these applications have focused on audio, however, they are now being extended to video. This publication will present an in-depth view into the state-of-the-art of these applications, and discuss the corresponding requirements that said fingerprint technologies have to fulfill. Furthermore, future scenarios are investigated where fingerprinting will play a crucial role in consumer electronics, stretching from home and car entertainment devices to the world of mobile and portable applications.

In this paper, we address the problem of collaborative video caching in mobile ad-hoc networks. We consider network portraying static video server with wired interface to gateway node that is equipped with wireless interfaces, other nodes are requiring access to the video streams that is stored at video server. In order to reduce the average access latency as well as enhance the video accessibility, efficient video caching placement and replacement strategies are crucial at some of the distributed intermediate nodes across the network. Virtual backbone caching nodes will be elected by executing caching placement algorithm after running the routing protocol phase. The simulation results indicate that the proposed collaborative aggregate cache mechanism can significantly improve the video QoS in terms of packet loss and average packet delay.

The visual representation of information is an interesting way of communication both in industrial and science. The viewing of interactive data gives the users a fun and immediate access to information they are looking for. In this context and with existing technologies that make Internet applications rich in content, we can ask our selves for the relevance of a software architecture dedicated to this type of media. We tried to design an architecture responding to our expectations, and its feasibility study by the realization of an application in the context of geographic mapping.

From the four basic functionalities of video delivery systems - linear TV, video on demand (VoD), time-shifted TV (tsTV), and network personal video recorder (nPVR) - most of today's solutions focus either on linear TV, or on VoD. While linear TV usually uses efficient distribution mechanisms such as multicast, VoD is often realized via centralized, bandwidth- inefficient unicast. Even when file sharing P2P algorithms are used for VoD or nPVR, they can not be applied to tsTV since they require the whole content to exist from the beginning. With this paper, we propose a novel solution that aims at offering all four functionalities in one distributed system. Our architecture uses multicast for the distribution of live content, and a modified P2P protocol for offering VoD, nPVR, and tsTV altogether.

A new SoC architecture for multimedia content analysis is implemented with 16 mm 2 area in 90 nm CMOS technology. It focuses on the co-acceleration of computer vision and machine learning algorithms, and two stream processors with massively parallel processing elements are integrated to achieve tera-scale performance. In the dual processor architecture, the data are transferred between processors and the high bandwidth dual memory through the local media bus, which reduces the power consumption in the AHB data access. The power efficiency of the proposed machine learning SoC is 1.7 TOPS/W, and the area efficiency is 81.3 GOPS/mm 2 .
