One of the fundamental issues in bridging the gap between the proliferation of content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) systems in the scientific literature and the deficiency of their usage in medical community is based on the characteristic of CBIR to access information by images or/and text only. Yet, the way physicians are reasoning about patients leads intuitively to a case representation. Hence, a proper solution to overcome this gap is to consider a CBIR approach inspired by Case-Based Reasoning (CBR), which naturally introduces medical knowledge structured by cases. Moreover, in a CBR system, the knowledge is incrementally added and learned. The purpose of this study is to initiate a translational solution from CBIR algorithms to clinical practice, using a CBIR/CBR hybrid approach. Therefore, we advance the idea of a translational incremental similarity-based reasoning (TISBR), using combined CBIR and CBR characteristics: incremental learning of medical knowledge, medical case-based structure of the knowledge (CBR), image usage to retrieve similar cases (CBIR), similarity concept (central for both paradigms). For this purpose, three major axes are explored: the indexing, the cases retrieval and the search refinement, applied to Breast Cancer Grading (BCG), a powerful breast cancer prognosis exam. The effectiveness of this strategy is currently evaluated over cases provided by the Pathology Department of Singapore National University Hospital, for the indexing. With its current accuracy, TISBR launches interesting perspectives for complex reasoning in future medical research, opening the way to a better knowledge traceability and a better acceptance rate of computer-aided diagnosis assistance among practitioners.

Evolving device capabilities and network technologies make the seamless combination of personal area and wide area networks capable and desirable to exploit advantages of each of the environments. By this, the vision of adaptive and context-aware service provision becomes possible and offers new opportunities for pervasive computing. In this paper, we describe an approach that addresses the convergence of personal area and wide area networks on the service level. We extend a middleware for mobile ad hoc networks to enable the remote access to personal multimedia content at home via a proper infrastructure and gateway. In a second step, we use this concept to enable the context-aware download of multimedia content to the mobile phone based on rules and a semantic blackboard approach.

Power allocation with unequal strategy, is a technique to further enhance system performance in multiple access schemes. This paper is basically related with the performance enhancement of iterative IDMA systems using unequal optimum power allocation algorithm. Here, we compare the performance of coded and uncoded IDMA system with random interleaver & tree based interleaver. The simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of tree based interleaver in comparison to random interleaver in view of memory requirement along with similar BER performance.

Traditional multimedia classification techniques are based on the analysis of either low-level features or annotated textual information. Instead, the semantic gap between rough data and its content is still a challenging task. In this paper, we describe a novel solution which automatically associates the image analysis and processing algorithms to keywords and human annotation. We use the well known \FLICK\ system, that contains images, tags, keywords and sometimes useful annotation describing both the content of an image and personal interesting information describing the scene. We have carried out several experiments demonstrating that the proposed categorization process achieves quite good performances in terms of efficiency and effectiveness.

With network pipes growing fatter, peer to peer systems are fast emerging as a viable alternative to the client-server model. One of the major problems in P2P networks is the efficient and fast content distribution and search. In this paper we investigate the problem of replicating content information among the peer nodes in a scalable manner using coordinate based placement such that an automatic identification of near by replica locator nodes is possible to improve the search latency when finding content sources. We also investigate the use of social groups as content information aggregators to facilitate faster and more accurate search. We try to improve the overall accessibility of content in the network by hierarchically distributing the content information. We show by way of simulation the improvement in performance of content location using the above methods.

As revenues from voice services continue to fall, telecommunication operators have begun to develop and acquire new services in an attempt to generate new revenue streams and to avoid losing customers to third party service providers. One such service that many, if not all, operators are investigating is Internet Protocol Television (IPTV). IPTV provides broadcast television channels as well as Video on Demand (VoD) content to subscribers, delivering the video content using the Internet Protocol (IP). The UCT Advanced IPTV v2.0 system is an open source implementation of an IPTV system based on ETSI TISPAN standards. The proposed system also incorporates multimedia content adaptation methods in order to adapt video to meet varying client terminal devices and access network characteristics. This paper describes the history of the project followed by the relevant ETSI TISPAN standards. It then goes on to discuss the software architecture of the developed system and provides results of several transcoding tests.

Layer-encoded multimedia multicasting (LMM) has emerged in recent years to support heterogeneous subscriber stations with diverse computing and networking capabilities. With the advance of broadband wireless access technologies, wireless relay networks (WRNs) are expected to provide significant improvement on throughput and extension of coverage for next-generation wireless systems. In this paper, we study a radio resource allocation problem with the consideration of wireless interferences for LMM over WRNs. The problem is formally formulated, and the objective of the problem is to maximize the system utility where the utility is defined as user satisfaction. The NP-hardness of the problem is demonstrated, and then a heuristic algorithm is proposed. A series of experiments are conducted to demonstrate the capability of our proposed algorithm.

This paper proposes a model to support sign language content development and deployment in digital television scenarios. The model objective is to overcome traditional video limitations on the production of signed content and improve accessibility on digital television. Previous work on sign and gesture recognition, sign notation systems and avatar animation are reviewed. Sign communication requirements are investigated and adequate algorithms are identified to enable sign language processing and transmission. An application interface is proposed in order to access the model functionalities. The final discussion lists the benefits and limitations of the proposed model.

Large-scale multimedia semantic concept detection requires realtime identification of a set of concepts in streaming video or large image datasets. The potentially high data volumes of multimedia content, and high complexity associated with individual concept detectors, have hindered the practical deployment of many current solutions. In this paper, we present a summary of our work in building systems and applications for resource adaptive semantic concept detection in multimedia using large-scale distributed stream mining systems. We construct such concept detection applications as a hierarchical topology of individual concept detectors, and deploy them on distributed processing infrastructure. We then focus on dynamically configuring individual concept detectors to meet system imposed resource constraints while minimizing a penalty defined in terms of the misclassification cost. We present multiple centralized and distributed algorithms for this configuration, and describe the implemented application and system. We also verify through simulations that significant improvement in terms of accuracy of classification can be achieved through our approach.

The ever-increasing density of computer storage devices has allowed the average user to store enormous quantities of multimedia content, and a large amount of this content is usually music. Current search techniques for musical content rely on meta-data tags which describe artist, album, year, genre, etc. Query-by-content systems allow users to search based upon the acoustical content of the songs. Recent systems have mainly depended upon textual representations of the queries and targets in order to apply common string-matching algorithms. However, these methods lose much of the information content of the song and limit the ways in which a user may search. We have created a music recommendation system that uses self-organizing maps to find similarities between songs while preserving more of the original acoustical content. We build on the design of the recommendation system to create a musical query-by-content system. We discuss the weaknesses of the naive solution and then implement a quasi-supervised design and discuss some preliminary results.
