Many home networks now use 802.11 wireless local area networks (WLAN)s. The 802.11e amendment has been designed to improve quality of service (QoS) over these networks allowing for multimedia applications such as IPTV to be better supported. The H.264 video compression standard is suitable for IPTV due to its high compression and error resilience. Video packets of different slice types are of varying importance to the decoded video quality so can be mapped into different priority queues using 802.11e enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA). We investigate several mapping schemes for a variety of video content to see how the quality of the decoded video is affected as the number of concurrent video connections is increased. The different mapping schemes exhibit different loss patterns in the video sequences and their impact on the video quality is content dependent. Subjective tests were therefore carried out which allow us to perform an accurate and valid assessment of the video quality. Packet loss rate is also reported. Our results show that as the number of concurrent videos approaches the network capacity some mapping schemes show a cliff-edge drop in quality while others offer a more acceptable gradual quality degradation. These schemes cause B-frames to be dropped and in effect reduce the video frame rate. These schemes are more successful for videos that have low or medium temporal activity.

Technological developments of the last few years have favoured the creation of distributed networking infrastructures (usually referred to as community networks) where the resources are made available to the members of a community of people. With emerging large-scale community infrastructures the opportunities for new commercial services and for innovative business models are becoming feasible. Since one of the most resource-demanding services today is access to user-generated content through the Web, suitable content delivery services are needed in the context of community networks in orders to make an effective usage of shared resources. In this paper we describe two architectures we have designed to provide optimized delivery of multimedia Web content (e.g. video but also other kinds of user generated content) within community networks. Both architectures work without any kind of cooperation from the original content providers but assume that a basic Web caching service is provided within the network, either by commercial service providers or by the community members themselves. While the first architecture relies on a traditional centralized control entity, the second is designed according to the peer-to-peer paradigm, in order to provide better scalability, robustness to failures and self-configurability. Experimental results are also presented aimed at evaluating the performance gains for end-users from a localized distribution of content in scenarios in which community members are distributed in clusters sparse at different geographic locations.

contents-based image retrieval methods are in general more objective and effective than text-based image retrieval algorithms since they use color and texture in search and avoid annotating all images for search. SIM (Self-organizing Image browsing Map) is one of contents-based image retrieval algorithms that uses only browsable mapping results obtained by SOM (Self Organizing Map). However, SOM may have an error in selecting the right BMU in learning phase if there are similar nodes with distorted color information due to the intensity of light or objects' movements in the image. Such images may be mapped into other grouping nodes thus the search rate could be decreased by this effect. In this paper, we propose an improved SIM that uses HSV color model in extracting image features with color quantization. In order to avoid unexpected learning error mentioned above, our SOM consists of two layers. In learning phase, SOM layer 1 has the color feature vectors as input. After learning SOM Layer 1, the connection weights of this layer become the input of SOM Layer 2 and re-learning occurs. With this multi-layered SOM learning, we can avoid mapping errors among similar nodes of different color information. In search, we put the query image vector into SOM layer 2 and select nodes of SOM layer 1 that connects with chosen BMU of SOM layer 2. In experiment, we verified that the proposed SIM was better than the original SIM and avoid mapping error effectively.

In the present paper a novel system and its architecture is presented. The aim of this system is to enable personalized view, scalable, seamless and trusted multimedia content delivery, while protecting content from unauthorized access. Moreover, the system aims to keep bandwidth requirements low and increase the Perceived Quality of Service (PQoS). This content delivery is done through multiple kinds of networks. Special attention to content protection and license management and the possibilities of the system to provide adaptable content to the user thanks to the scalable and multi view video coding is made.

In most Interactive Storytelling systems, user interaction is based on natural language communication with virtual agents, either through isolated utterances or through dialogue. Natural language communication is also an essential element of interactive narratives in which the user is supposed to impersonate one of the story's characters. Whilst techniques for narrative generation and agent behaviour have made significant progress in recent years, natural language processing remains a bottleneck hampering the scalability of Interactive Storytelling systems. In this paper, we introduce a novel interaction technique based solely on emotional speech recognition. It allows the user to take part in dialogue with virtual actors without any constraints on style or expressivity, by mapping the recognised emotional categories to narrative situations and virtual characters feelings. Our Interactive Storytelling system uses an emotional planner to drive characters' behaviours. The main feature of this approach is that characters' feelings are part of the planning domain and are at the heart of narrative representations. The emotional speech recogniser analyses the speech signal to produce a variety of features which can be used to define ad-hoc categories on which to train the system. The content of our interactive narrative is an adaptation of one chapter of the XIXth century classic novel, Madame Bovary, which is well suited to a formalisation in terms of characters' feelings. At various stages of the narrative, the user can address the main character or respond to her, impersonating her lover. The emotional category extracted from the user utterance can be analysed in terms of the current narrative context, which includes characters' beliefs, feelings and expectations, to produce a specific influence on the target character, which will become visible through a change in its behaviour, achieving a high level of realism for the interaction. This paper presents the MoMPt project, an open source project developed to allow access to multimedia content and to control multiple HTPCs remotely using mobile devices. The main contribution in the context of this project is it reference design, which make possible access HTPC functionalities using different technologies, such as UPnP and XML-RPC. In this paper we briefly explain our reference design, and its main components. Also, we show two developed solutions, one for the MediaPortal HTPC, and another to the Freevo HTPC. It is discussed how they were developed, and the evaluation scenario with mobile devices.

The advancement of home network has put more of multimedia content on the network creating a demand for the fast browsers over the portable CE devices. It calls for more intelligence for the browsers. In this paper, the required extra intelligence would be explored with the usage of a neural network. It throws light on the alternative database search mechanisms, search engine architectures etc. The focus here is on the reduction of query time with the help of the intelligent element. The present day distributed nature of the documents require efficient data communication and integration especially when it is required to access a particular information in the multiple files through the query. This calls for online decisions. The relevance of information fusion in conjunction with the Bayesian decisions would be explored in this paper. A novel architecture of neural network that makes use of information feedback from the output to the input of the network to make the search effective in terms of time and resources is provided.

The experiments described in this paper indicate that under certain conditions content-based features are not required for efficient user-centred image retrieval in small media collections. The importance of feature selection drops dramatically if classification is used for retrieval (e.g. if Support Vector Machines are used) and only little user feedback is available. In this situation simple image, features and even random features perform equally well as sophisticated signal processing-based features (e.g. the content-based MPEG-7 image descriptors). Practically relevant applications for these findings are retrieval on mobile devices and in heterogeneous (e.g. ad hoc generated) media collections.

We consider the problem of optimally configuring classifier chains for real-time multimedia stream mining systems. Jointly maximizing the performance over several classifiers under minimal end-to-end processing delay is a difficult task due to the distributed nature of analytics (e.g. utilized models or stored data sets), where changing the filtering process at a single classifier can have an unpredictable effect on both the feature values of data arriving at classifiers further downstream, as well as the end-to-end processing delay. While the utility function can not be accurately modeled, in this paper we propose a randomized distributed algorithm that guarantees almost, sure convergence to the optimal solution. We also provide results using speech data showing that the algorithm can perform Well under highly dynamic environments.

In this paper, we propose a new concept for browsing and searching in large collections of content-based indexed images. Our approach is inspired by greedy routing algorithms used in distributed networks. We define a navigation graph, called NAVGRAPH, whose vertices represent images. The edges of the navgraph are computed according to a similarity measure between indexed images. The resulting graph can be seen as an ad-hoc network of images in which a greedy routing algorithm can be applied for retrieval purposes. A request for a target image consists of a walk in the navigation graph using a greedy,approach : starting from an arbitrary vertex/image, the neighbors of the current vertex are presented to the user, who iteratively selects the vertex which is the most similar to the target. We present the NAVGRAPH construction and prove its efficiency for greedy routing. We also propose a specific content-descriptor that we compare to the MPEG7 Color Layout Descriptor. Experimental results with test-users show the usability of this approach.
