An IPTV system that transmits multimediacontents through the IP network needs to adopt a conditional access system allowing the only entitled subscribers to view the premium content as other pay-TV systems do. Although several standard specifications have been published for interoperable models of conditional accesssystems, the proposed models are based on the unidirectional or restricted bidirectional broadcasting network and do not utilize the characteristics of the IP network. However, software download scheme through the bidirectional IP network enables it to change existing conditional accesssystems in a secure way. This paper introduces an interoperable conditional access system that can update any cryptographic software provided by different conditional access system vendors through downloading and executing dynamically the downloaded conditional access software only if the software follows the pre-defined interfaces.

To satisfy the requirement of embedded video encoder in various scenarios, an embedded multi-channel video coding system based on multimedia processor-DM642 DSP is designed in this paper. For real-time application requirement, we optimize the encoder at three levels: Firstly, at algorithm level, develop some fast algorithm fitting for LISP;secondly, at system level, adjust the architecture of encoder and optimization data transfer with EDMA;thirdly, at code level, use linear assembly for key code. Experimental results show that the embedded video encoder can compress four channel CIF video data real-time.

This paper addresses the image semantic gap (i.e. the difficulty to automatically characterize the image semantic content through extracted low-level signal features) by investigating the formation of semantic concepts (such as mountains, sky, grass...) in a population of image agents: abstract structures representing the image visual entities. Through the development of processes mapping extracted low-level features to concept-based visual information, our contribution is twofold. First, we propose a learning framework mapping signal (color, texture) and semantic concepts to highlight the image agents. Contrary to traditional architectures considering high-dimensional spaces of low-level extracted signal features, this framework addresses the curse of dimensionality. Then, at the image agent population level, the agents communicate about the perceived semantic concepts with no access to global information or to the representations of other agents, they only exchange conceptual information. While doing so they adapt their internal representations to be more successful at conveying the perceived semantic information in future interactions. The image content is therefore soundly inferred through these concept-based linguistic interactions. The SIR1_Agent prototype implements our theoretical framework and its architecture revolves around functional modules enabling the characterization of concept-based linguistic structures, highlighting the image agents and enforcing interactions and coordination between them.

Applications that deliver multimediacontent to and display such content on mobile devices have become increasingly common in recent years. When faced with a large amount of content, unfamiliar users can make use of each otherspsila recommendations, through recommender systems, to find content of interest to them. As a case in point we present the design of a recommender system that can be used by tourists to request a travel itinerary, and subsequently browse multimediacontent for each recommended tourist spot. The techniques combined in our recommender system include genetic algorithms and fuzzy logic. Recommendations are chosen to match a user profile based on a userpsilas personal preferences. Our system design has wide applicability in multimediasystems where the user requires assistance in content selection.

Unlike early versions of MPEG, MPEG-7 is shifting from a data-compression standard to a multimediacontent description standard. As a result, it will have much broader implications for the human-computer interaction research. There are countless ways that the MPEG-7 metadata description framework can enhance userspsila experiences in accessing multimediacontent. In this paper, we will report the algorithms that we developed for automatic generation of MPEG-7psilas description schemes (DSs): a video Table of contents DS to enhance active video browsing, a Summary DS to enable direct use of a meta-data producerpsilas annotation, and a Still Image DS to allow interactive content-based image retrieval. Experimental results and user studies demonstrated the usefulness of MPEG-7psilas meta-data framework and effectiveness of our proposed automatic DS generation techniques.

A new channel estimation approach based on expectation maximization (EM) algorithm is proposed for the interleave-division multiple accesssystems (IDMA). The combination channel estimation is used in the proposed algorithm. The pilot sequences are used to estimate the channel information at the first iteration. The pilot and the soft estimates from the decoders are combined to refine the channel coefficients in the following estimation iterations. The proposed approach greatly reduces the complexity. The simulation results indicate that the bit-error-rate performance of the proposed algorithm is very close to that of ideal channel estimation and the algorithm based on posteriori information is more accurate than that using extrinsic information.

The multimediacontent delivery chain poses today many challenges. There are increasing terminal diversity, network heterogeneity and the pressure to satisfy the user preferences. The situation encourages the need for the customized contents in order to provide the user in the best possible experience. In this paper, we address the problem of multimedia customization. For the customized content, we suggest the UMA (universal multimediaaccess) model that uses the multimediacontent description MPEG-7 standard and the MPEG-21 multimedia framework.
