The fast growing progress in data communication leads to a wide variety of available access technologies that provide everything from mobile data transfer to high-speed data links using fibre optics. Due to this fact multimediacontents, which have to be transmitted, have to be adapted every time the connection parameters are changing. Fortunately, modern video coding standards are able to deliver one multimedia signal in a scalable manner where various representations can be extracted to fit a wide range of applications. Commonly known standards such as MPEG-4 and H.264 are designed to provide a nearly perfect trade-off between quality and data rates. The other side of the coin is that none of these modern video-coding algorithms is implementing any security features that will prevent unauthorised access. Therefore, this paper will first briefly examine modern coding algorithms and techniques. Having finished analysis, a communication infrastructure set-up for improved multimedia delivery will be presented along with a cryptographic concept that prevents unauthorised access and perfectly fits into the system. Finally, a conclusion will be given.

This paper further refines the architecture and design, introduced in a previous work on the management and control, of the IEEE 802.16/WiMAX access in a multi-domain chain of IP core networks. The high level objective is to manage end-to-end connectivity services in an integrated way, at overlay level, assuring guaranteed QoS for multimedia delivery over networks with heterogeneous access. Flexible solutions are proposed for integration of the WiMAX service flows management and control within an integrated management system (EIMS) developed in the ENTHRONE FP6 project.

The task of creating albums or multimedia output from consumer content is becoming increasingly difficult as the amount of content grows. This work presents a system for using semantic information to automate the process of selecting and combining digital assets into summary presentations or storylines, as well as determining triggers for when to generate such content. The system obtains semantic information from a variety of sources, including the capture metadata, image and video understanding algorithms, user profiles and third party ontologies; all such semantic information is stored in a triple store. Prolog-based rules leverage the triple store to provide a knowledgebase for determining when to create particular types of output and how to select assets for such output. This knowledgebase greatly simplifies the task of creating consumer-grade multimediacontent.

This paper addresses the inter-operability problem of multimedia terminal in media content delivery over heterogeneous networks and devices. We design and implement a terminal which includes a content browser providing presentation, navigation and interaction with MPEG-21 digital item declaration (MPEG-21 DID) in order to support universal media access (UMA). We optimized the architecture in a client-server distributed approach with Web Service support. This terminal enables the MPEG-21 standard compliant contentaccessible on different terminal devices via common Web browsers. Such a design strategy illustrates a next-generation multimedia terminal supporting inter-operability in multimediacontent adaptation over a heterogeneous delivery chain.

This paper presents a personalization recommendation model to recommend potentially interesting resources to users based on the Web access log of users. This model builds on the apriori algorithm and the tf-idf technology, which consists of three parts: resource description, user's preference extraction and the personalization recommendation. Firstly, our model generates resource text space vector by analyzing the resource information achieved by mining user's Web access log, then it attains interest set to make use of the apriori algorithm based on the vector, finally, it recommends filtered and sorted resources to users content based recommendation model.

The explosion of multimedia data necessitates effective and efficient ways for us to get access to our desired ones. In this article, we draw an analogy between image retrieval and text retrieval and propose a visual phrase-based approach to retrieve images containing desired objects (object-based image retrieval). The visual phrase is defined as a pair of frequently co-occurred adjacent local image patches and is constructed using data mining. We design methods on how to construct visual phrase and how to index/search images based on visual phrase. We demonstrate experiments to show our visual phrase-based approach can be very efficient and more effective than current visual word-based approach.

Security and fast multimedia distribution has become an important research topic due to ever growing opportunities on the Internet and improving network capability. Faster and more secure multimedia distribution can be achieved through Web caching and encryption. Due to specific characteristic of multimediacontent such as its size, it is important to reconsider encryption technique used for multimediacontent. In order to reduce user perceived latency, it is proposed to use partial encryption based on the multimedia type. Moreover, in order to guarantee that only authorized users have access to secure multimedia, group key management is introduced into the proposed system. This enables to ensure backward and forward secrecy on authorized group. Using these techniques will guarantee a more secure and faster multimediacontent distribution.

Unlike early versions of MPEG, MPEG-7 is shifting from a data-compression standard to a multimediacontent description standard. As a result, it will have much broader implications for the human-computer interaction research. There are countless ways that the MPEG-7 meta- data description framework can enhance users’ experiences in accessing multimediacontent. In this paper, we will report the algorithms that we developed for automatic generation of MPEG-7’s description schemes (DSs): a video Table of contents DS to enhance active video browsing, a Summary DS to enable direct use of a meta-data producer’s annotation, and a Still Image DS to allow interactive content-based image retrieval. Experimental results and user studies demonstrated the usefulness of MPEG-7’s meta-data framework and effectiveness of our proposed automatic DS generation techniques.

As the high quality of multimediacontent becomes more delicate today, the file size is becoming gigantic resulting from its high bit rate with complex encoding format.
