This paper presents a fuzzy association rule-based intrusion detection and prevention (FAR IDP) system that is implemented within an e-commerce Web service-based application. This system compares the effectiveness and efficiency of using 20 fuzzy association rules compared to 366 fuzzy associative patterns (FAP) to determine whether to definitely grant access to normal transaction, probably deny access for suspicious transaction or certainly deny access to transactions which may contain malicious inputs or XML content. Experimental results from our FAR IDP system have demonstrated that both rules-based and pattern-based algorithms are able to detect, prevent and predict Web service attacks such as SQL injection, XML injection, DoS and SOAP oversized close to real-time, with detection accuracy of not lower than 99%. There is also a slight difference in terms of time;the transaction time for FAP is almost doubled that of FAR's in ms. Additionally, with a transaction time of less than 0.25ms and a detection accuracy of greater than 99%, our FAR IDP has outperformed many other fuzzy and Web service-based IDP systems.

In semantic content-based image/video browsing and navigation systems, efficient mechanisms to represent and manage a large collection of digital images/videos are needed. Traditional keyword-based indexing describes the content of multimedia data through annotations such as text or keywords extracted manually by the user from a controlled vocabulary This textual indexing technique lacks the flexibility of satisfying various kinds of queries requested by database users and also requires huge amount of work for updating the information. Current content-based retrieval systems often extract a set of features such as color, texture, shape motion, speed, and position from the raw multimedia data automatically and store them as content descriptors. This content-based metadata differs from text-based metadata in that it supports wider varieties of queries and can be extracted automatically, thus providing a promising approach for efficient database access and management. When the raw data volume grows very large, explicitly extracting the content-information and storing it as metadata along with the images will improve querying performance since metadata requires much less storage than the raw image data and thus will be easier to manipulate. In this paper we maintain that storing metadata together with images will enable effective information management and efficient remote query. We also show, using a texture classification example, that this side information can be compressed while guaranteeing that the desired query accuracy is satisfied. We argue that the compact representation of the image contents not only reduces significantly the storage and transmission rate requirement, but also facilitates certain types of queries. algorithms are developed for optimized compression of this texture feature metadata given that tile goal is to maximize tile classification performance for a given rate budget.

Based on the blobworld method, we propose a blob-centric image querying scheme that is comprised of several new techniques in content-based image retrieval. We report our research results in the database structure and maintenance algorithms for image indexing. We further conduct a performance comparison of image retrieval efficiency for three possible image retrieval methods, the naive method, the representative-blobs method, and the indexing method. Our quantitative analysis shows over 90% reduction in query response time by using the representative-blobs method and the indexing method.

The enormous growth of digital music databases has led to a comparable growth in the need for methods that help users organize and access such information. One area in particular that has seen much recent research activity is the use of automated techniques to describe audio content and to allow its identification, browsing and retrieval. Caching at the edge of the radio network is increasingly viewed as a promising countermeasure to the staggering demand for mobile video content. The persistent orientation of newer generations of mobile communication systems towards lower latency and faster radio access speeds only strengthens the arguments in its favor. When content caching is coordinated with other radio resource management functions, in particular, the benefits for the end users and the network operator are significant. In this paper, we investigate these benefits in cache enabled small cell networks that jointly control (i) the Small-Cell Base Stations (SBSs) that serve as network access points for the mobile users;and (ii) the content that is stored at the SBS co-located caches. Our main contribution is a fast-converging computationally simple heuristic algorithm that iterates between assigning users to small cells and content to SBS caches, to maximize the overall cache hit ratio. The algorithm solutions compete with the optimal assignments at small problem instances and outperform alternative solutions for larger instances, especially when the content demand exhibits spatial locality. Combining good performance with non-prohibitive complexity, the algorithm could become a valuable tool for small cell network operators seeking to optimize the use of radio network resources.

As the number of mobile services grows, mobile users who gain access to the Internet via mobile devices are increasing. accessibility refers to providing functionality to smart phone apps (and web) so that all human can access contents/service/products on the Internet regardless their age and disability. accessibility support is essential for mobile users owing to the unique nature and capabilities of mobile devices, such as smaller screens, touch and gesture interface, and built-in screen readers specific to operating systems. The latest mobile device usage statistics showed that between the two different mobile channels, mobile apps and mobile webs, consumers spend most of their time in mobile apps. accessibility of apps in a smartphone is more important than ever as more people use a smartphone apps to consume content/ service/ product on the Internet. Automated tools for mobile apps that evaluate compliance with accessibility standards are still scarce. This makes it difficult for developers who are unfamiliar with accessibility needs to ensure their apps are accessible by everyone. While the prototype does not include all the functions, it demonstrates that it is feasible to develop a full version of an automatic assessment tool for smartphone apps, which is an under-researched area. This paper designs an accessibility evaluation tool that checks mobile apps for conformance with accessibility standards, and develops a prototype of the evaluation tool. The proposed tool verifies the existence (or nonexistence) of alternative text for non-text content, which is an important accessibility factor for visually impaired users. It discovers missing alternative text by checking the contentDescription attribute of the ImageView element in Android XML files.

Managing large scale broadband multimedia services on distributed media servers

This paper presents algorithms and principles for the management of large scale broadband multimedia services. For the implementation of these services we use a network of distributed media servers, storing broadband media information e.g. audio and video that are streamed from the server to the connected clients. The problem studied in this paper is the managing of media content on a server network. We present the 'Distributed Server Management System (DSMS)' that performs an efficient content and service management on the distributed servers. The DSMS allows to collect access patterns from the users of the multimedia services and uses this knowledge for the solution of some combinatorial optimization algorithms that have to be solved for an efficient assignment of media assets. We present these optimization algorithms and evaluate their performance using some benchmark instances.

Future Internet is foreseen to fully handle a wide range of multimedia services allowing their access trough diverse computing devices such as laptops, TVs, PDAs and 3G mobile phones interconnected via different wire-line and wireless networking technologies. Such a diversification in the computational context reinforces the need of personalized and adaptive media services towards better end-user experience. However, building context-aware media systems raises a number of challenges related to (i) context representation, management and provisioning (ii) binding context situations to services and (iii) performing context-driven service and content adaptation;and this in a dynamic, scalable and interoperable way. In this paper, we present a future Internet architecture1 that enables automated situation-driven media services' discovery, composition and delivery. The proposed solution relies on a new Home-Box layer among which the context-awareness and adaptation features are distributed. © 2014 IEEE.
