Most recommendation datasets for tourism are restricted to one world region and rely on explicit data such as checkins. However, in reality, tourists visit various places worldwide and document their trips primarily through photos. These images contain a wealth of raw information that can be used to capture users' preferences and recommend personalized content. Visual content was already used in past works, but no large-scale publicly-available dataset that gives access to users' personal images exists for recommender systems. As such a resource would open-up possibilities for new image-based recommendation algorithms, we introduce Vis2Rec, a new dataset based on visit data extracted from users' Flickr photographic streams, which includes over 7 million photos, 36k recognizable points of interest, and 14k user profiles. Google Landmarks v2 is used as an auxiliary dataset to identify points of interest in users' photos, using a state-of-the-art image-matching deep architecture. Image-based user profiles are then constituted by aggregating the points of interest detected for each user. In addition, ground truth visits were determined for the test subset in order to enable accurate evaluation. Finally, we benchmark Vis2Rec using various existing recommender systems, and discuss the possibilities opened up by the availability of user images, as well as the societal issues that come with them. Following good practice in dataset sharing, Vis2Rec is created using only freely distributable content, and additional anonymization is performed to ensure the privacy of users. The raw dataset and the preprocessed user profiles will be publicly available at https://***/MSoumm/Vis2Rec.

In the medical field, digital images are becoming more and more important for diagnostics and therapy of the patients. At the same time, the development of new technologies has increased the amount of image data produced in a hospital. This creates a demand for access methods that offer more than text-based queries for retrieval of the information. In this paper is proposed a framework for the retrieval of medical images that allows the use of different algorithms for the search of medical images by similarity. The framework also enables the search for textual information from an associated medical report and DICOM header information. The proposed system can be used for support of clinical decision making and is intended to be integrated with an open source picture, archiving and communication systems (PACS). The BIRAM has the following advantages: (i) Can receive several types of algorithms for image similarity search;(ii) Allows the codification of the report according to a medical dictionary, improving the indexing of the information and retrieval;(iii) The algorithms can be selectively applied to images with the appropriated characteristics, for instance, only in magnetic resonance images. The framework was implemented in Java language using a MS access 97 database. The proposed framework can still be improved, by the use of regions of interest (ROI), indexing with slim-trees and integration with a PACS Server.

The paper presents algorithms and principles for the management of large scale broadband multimedia services. For the implementation of these services, we use a network of distributed media servers, storing broadband media information e.g. audio and video that are streamed from the server to the connected clients. The problem studied in the paper is the managing of media content on a server network. We present the "Distributed Server Management System (DSMS)" that performs an efficient content and service management on the distributed servers. The DSMS allows one to collect access patterns from the users of the multimedia services and uses this knowledge for the solution of some combinatorial optimization algorithms that have to be solved for an efficient assignment of media assets. We present these optimization algorithms and evaluate their performance using some benchmark instances.

We design, implement, and evaluate a middleware system, HybCAST, that leverages a hybrid cellular and ad hoc network to disseminate rich contents from a source to all mobile devices in a predetermined region. HybCAST targets information dissemination over a range of scenarios (e. g., military operations, crisis alerting, and popular sporting events) in which high reliability and low latency are critical and existing fixed infrastructures such as wired networks, 802.11 access points are heavily loaded or partially destroyed. HybCAST implements a suite of protocols that: (i) structures the hybrid network into a hierarchy of two-level ad hoc clusters for better scalability, (ii) employ both data push and pull mechanisms for high reliability and low latency dissemination of rich content, and (iii) implement a near-optimal gateway selection algorithm to minimize the transmission redundancy. To demonstrate its practicality and efficiency, we have implemented and deployed the HybCAST middleware on several Android smartphones and an in-network Linux machine that acts as a dissemination server. The system is evaluated via real experiments using a UMTS network and extensive packet-level simulations. Our experimental results from a live network show that HybCAST achieves 100% reliability with shorter latencies and lower overall energy consumption. Simulation results confirm that HybCAST outperforms other state-of-the-art systems in the literature. For example, HybCAST exhibits a 5 times reduction in the dissemination latencies as compared to other hybrid dissemination protocols, while its energy consumption is a third of a cellular-only dissemination system. Furthermore, the simulation results demonstrate that HybCAST scales well and maintains good performance under varying numbers of mobile devices, diverse content sizes, and device mobility.

Traditional cryptography systems treat every portion of a message (a video, an image, or an audio) equally and encrypt the entire message as a whole. As a result, those security systems often have only two states: access authorization and access denial. To facilitate multi-level access control with interoperability, scalable security mechanism is needed. Further, the availability of varying network bandwidth and diverse receiver device capabilities demand scalable and flexible approaches that are capable of adapting to changing network conditions as well as device capabilities. In this paper, we describe a multimedia encryption scheme that supports scalability. One desirable feature of the proposed scheme is its simplicity and flexibility in supporting scalable content access control.

In this paper, an approach for providing unified access to heterogeneous distributed cultural heritage collections is presented. The proposed approach is developed within the framework of the REACH Greek National Project with the overall aim to provide a Web portal enabling access to different databases of cultural content with emphasis on multimedia material. In order to achieve this, the project employs ontology-based representation of cultural content, multimedia content-based search algorithms, hybrid ontology and content-based access and user-friendly search interfaces. This fusion approach provides users with resources for building queries of multimedia repositories sequentially using multiple individual search tools, and performs higher quality searching. In the current stage of development, real content such as inscriptions and coins from the Greco-Roman time period, has successfully been incorporated in the system

The advances of ubiquitous communication infrastructures, the rapid adoption of mobile devices and pervasive computing technologies has allowed e-learning users access to multimedia learning contents in e-learning environments. However, because of the diversity and heterogeneity of the mobile users, their preferences, and the rich multimedia learning content, it is a major challenge for the access of learning content by the desired devices in the e-learning environment to user's satisfaction in terms of QoS demands. In order to alleviate the challenge of learning content mismatch, content adaptation is essential. To this end, we propose an ACO-based multimedia content adaptation approach, which inherits the adoption of ACO-based path selection behavior in the path computation for appropriate learning content customization. We compare our proposed approach with other two competitive algorithms, measure the performance and find that our proposed algorithms outperforms the basic AntNet and Genetic in terms of success rate, latency, runtime comparison and convergence. The performance evaluations are conducted using NetLogo simulation environment.
