Successful music recommendation systems need to incorporate information on at least three levels: the music content, the music context, and the user context. The former refers to features derived from the audio signal;the second refers to aspects of the music or artist not encoded in the audio, nevertheless important to human music perception;the third refers to contextual aspects of the user which change dynamically. In this paper, we briefly review the well-researched categories of music content and music context features, before focusing on user-centric models, which have been neglected for a long time in music retrieval and recommendation approaches. In particular, we address the following tasks: (i) geospatial music recommendation from microblog data, (ii) user-aware music playlist generation on smart phones, and (iii) matching places of interest and music. The approaches presented for task (i) rely on large-scale data inferred from microblogs, motivated by the fact that social media represent an unprecedented source of information about every topic of our daily lives. Information about music items and artists is thus found in abundance in user-generated data. The questions of how to infer information relevant to music recommendation from microblogs and what to learn from them are discussed. So are different ways of incorporating this kind of information into state-of-the-art music recommendation algorithms. The presented approaches targeted at tasks (ii) and (iii) model the user in a more comprehensive way than just using information about her location and music listening habits. We report results of a user study aiming at investigating the relationship between music listening activity and a large set of contextual user features. Based on these, an intelligent mobile music player that automatically adapts the current playlist to the user context is presented. More than providing a wireless structure for Internet access, Wireless Mesh Networks are being challenged to support diverse kinds of multimedia applications such as Voice over IP and video streaming in publish-subscriber and peer-to-peer service models. In this context, several routing metrics have been proposed to improve the routing performance as well as the network capability to satisfy the requirements of multimedia applications. However, most routing metrics lack the consistent integration of efficient monitoring mechanisms for interference and traffic load characterization in order to support the adequate decisions by the routing algorithms. In this sense, a new routing metric is proposed in this paper, called Metric for INterference and channel Diversity (MIND), that measures network interference and load, based on a passive monitoring mechanism in order to avoid the overhead of active network state information gathering. An evaluation of MIND and relevant existing routing metrics was performed using NS2. The results showed that when path selection is based on MIND, traffic performance is significantly better than with the other metrics. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.

Pervasive systems are created by introducing wireless communication into distributed multimedia systems. These systems facilitate mobile data access to applications such as health care, tourism and emergency. However new challenges have emerged that has not been adequately addressed in traditional distributed multimedia systems. In pervasive systems, data must be adapted to the user's preferences, device capabilities and network conditions. Several content adaptation techniques have been proposed to fit the data to the usage environment. In this paper we present a distributed content adaptation framework (DCAF) for distributed multimedia systems and its prototype implementation. The architecture takes into consideration client profile, network conditions, content profile (meta-data) and available adaptation services (third party software elements) to construct an optimal dynamic adaptation graph.

Collaborative filtering is an important technology for creating user-adapting Web sites. In general the efforts of improving filtering algorithms and using the predictions for the presentation of filtered objects are decoupled. Therefore, common measures (or metrics) for evaluating collaborative filtering (recommender) systems focus mainly on the prediction algorithm. It is hard to relate the classic measurements to actual user satisfaction because of the way the user interacts with the recommendations, determined by their representation, influences the benefits for the user. We propose an abstract access paradigm, which can be applied to the design of filtering systems, and at the same time formalizes the access to filtering results via multi-corridors (based on content-based categories). This leads to new measures which better relate to the user satisfaction. We use these measures to evaluate the use of various kinds of multi-corridors for our prototype user-adapting Web site, the Active WebMuseum.

Walsh-like nonlinear phase orthogonal codes for direct sequence CDMA communications

Walsh codes are perfectly orthogonal binary (antipodal) block codes that found their use in many popular applications over several decades including synchronous multiuser communications. It is well known in the literature that they perform poorly for the case of asynchronous multiuser communications. Therefore, the near-orthogonal and nonlinear phase Gold codes with better performance are the preferred user codes in asynchronous direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) communications standards. In this paper, we relaxed linear phase requirements and new sets of Walsh-like nonlinear phase binary orthogonal user codes (transforms) are obtained for asynchronous and synchronous spread spectrum multiuser communications. It is shown that the proposed binary user code family outperforms the Walsh codes significantly and they match in performance with the popular, nearly orthogonal Gold codes closely for asynchronous multiuser communications in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. It is also shown that all. of the binary code families considered in this paper performed comparable for Rayleigh flat-fading channels. We present in this paper that there are a good number of such desirable code sets available in the binary sample space with different transform sizes. These new binary sets with good performance and flexible code lengths might help us to improve the spread spectrum multiplexing capabilities of future wireline and wireless CDMA communications systems.

An IPTV system that transmits multimedia contents through the IP network needs to adopt a conditional access system allowing the only entitled subscribers to view the premium content as other pay-TV systems do. Although several standard specifications have been published for interoperable models of conditional access systems, the proposed models are based on the unidirectional or restricted bidirectional broadcasting network and do not utilize the characteristics of the IP network. However, software download scheme through the bidirectional IP network enables it to change existing conditional access systems in a secure way. This paper introduces an interoperable conditional access system that can update any cryptographic software provided by different conditional access system vendors through downloading and executing dynamically the downloaded conditional access software only if the software follows the pre-defined interfaces.

For the past several years, taking very large collections of images in everyday life has become more common. All audiovisual artifacts are more likely to be shared and collaborated on since images might come from various devices such as smartphones, satellites, web cams, and drones. Not only that but they are often employed to represent things in a wide range of settings (public areas, train stations, hospitals, political and sports events, competitions, etc.). Hence, multimedia information processor approaches are growing in significance for the many kinds of visual identification jobs that must be adapted to handle large numbers while filling available window processing time. New approaches are being developed, audiences' tastes are shifting, and digital media technologies are becoming more powerful and accessible regularly, contributing to the medium's ever-evolving landscape. This article presents the planning stages of a MIPS (multimedia Information Processing System). This study provides a platform for image processing methods using a virtualized toolbox. Virtual servers, applications, system time, and data mining are all made possible on this platform thanks to the combination of these digital processing approaches. Additionally, the necessary frameworks and equipment adapters are automatically linked and installed, allowing members to access various apps without downloading and installing software programs. Experiments employed digital processing applications, (ii) a deep backpropagation algorithm for picture classification and multiobject placement, and (iii) a program for indexing and retrieving images. These analyses indicated the system's goal of facilitating the open distribution of important developments and annotation databases to guarantee the efficacy of artificial intelligence-based applications for processing multimedia content. © 2024 IEEE.

The quantity of multimedia content available either through the traditional distribution channels, such as broadcast television, or through new platforms like the Internet, is continuously increasing. Tools for user-oriented access to desired information are thus needed. In this paper, we illustrate a novel fuzzy multimedia mining technique for genre characterisation, aimed at overcoming limitations of conventional crisp classification systems. Effective results in genre classification and characterisation are presented based on the extraction of structural and cognitive properties of the content.
