In this paper, we propose an effective framework for semantic analysis of human motion from a monocular video. As it is difficult to find a good motion description for humans, we focus on a reliable recognition of the motion type and estimate the body orientation involved in the video sequence. Our framework analyzes the body motion in three modules: a pre-processing module, matching module and semantic module. The proposed framework includes novel object-level processing algorithms, such as a local descriptor and a global descriptor to detect body parts and analyze the shape of the whole body as well. Both descriptors jointly contribute to the matching process by incorporating them into a new weighted linear combination for matching. We also introduce a simple cost function based on time-index differences to distinguish motion types and cycles in human motions. Our system can provide three different types of analysis results: (1) foreground person detection;(2) motion recognition in the sequence;(3) 3-D modeling of human motion based on generic human models. The proposed framework was evaluated and proved its effectiveness as it achieves the motion recognition and body-orientation classification at the accuracy of 95 % and 98 %, respectively.

Detection of characters regions is a meaningful research work for both highlighting region of interest and recognition for further information processing. A lot of researches have been performed on character localization and extraction and this leads to the great needs of performance evaluation scheme to inspect detection algorithms. In this paper, two probability models are established to accomplish evaluation tasks for different applications respectively. For highlighting region of interest, a Gaussian probability model, which simulates the property of a low-pass Gaussian filter of human vision system (HVS), was constructed to allocate different weights to different character parts. It reveals the greatest potential to describe the performance of detectors, especially, when the result detected is an incomplete character, where other methods cannot effectively work. For the recognition destination, we also introduced a weighted probability model to give an appropriate description for the contribution of detection results to final recognition results. The validity of performance evaluation models proposed in this paper are proved by experiments on web images and natural scene images. These models proposed in this paper may also be able to be applied in evaluating algorithms of locating other objects, like face detection and more wide experiments need to be done to examine the assumption.

The access of high bandwidth multimedia data is generally limited to the network due to the limited network resources, inefficient indexing mechanism and less of semantic interpretations. Currently, most content-based video content representation involves the segmentation and indexing of video based on scene change and camera/object motion, and such research generally performs off-line video processing. Little research has been done on on-line video processing, which is crucial in video communication applications such as video conferencing, video multicasting and on-line video browsing and retrieval. Our research investigates real-time content-based processing of multicast video over the Internet. New on-line video feature extraction schemes, such as scene change detection, on-line key frame classification, are considered to meet the requirement of real-time video multicasting filtering based on user's profile over the Internet. The annotation and features extracted from multicasted videoconference bitstream by the on-line video content analysis proxies, which are using the proposed video processing algorithms, are output to a separate metadata channel for the further assistance of semantic multicasting of video content. The performance of the proposed algorithms is also demonstrated in the paper.

Fast Internet access technology (ADSL and VDSL) and the coming 3G mobile communication system of high data bandwidth capacity highly facilitate multimedia traffic demands by people. However, there are comparatively little technological advancements in the storage system, the essential part of VoD system. Disk array seems to be the most cost effective choice when I/O Bandwidths, disk space cost and scalability are all considered. The central question is how to offer more concurrent accesses to the videos(especially the popular ones) with the QoS requirements satisfied. In this paper, two replication algorithms are developed and evaluated. The system is modeled and evaluated by a SIMSCRIPT ii simulation program. The results illustrate that the two algorithms successfully manage disk resources to support more concurrent video stream.

This paper introduces the principal approach and describes the basic architecture and current implementation of the knowledge-based multimedia adaptation framework we are currently developing. The framework can be used in Universal multimedia access scenarios, where multimedia content has to be adapted to specific usage environment parameters (network and client device capabilities, user preferences). Using knowledge-based techniques (state-space planning), the framework automatically computes an adaptation plan, i.e., a sequence of media conversion operations, to transform the multimedia resources to meet the client's requirements or constraints. The system takes as input standards-compliant descriptions of the content (using MPEG-7 metadata) and of the target usage environment (using MPEG-21 Digital Item Adaptation metadata) to derive start and goal states for the planning process, respectively. Furthermore, declarative descriptions of the conversion operations (such as available via software library functions) enable existing adaptation algorithms to be invoked without requiring programming effort. A running example in the paper illustrates the descriptors and techniques employed by the knowledge-based media adaptation system.

The rapid increase of technological innovations in the mobile phone industry induces the research community to develop new and advanced systems to optimize services offered by mobile phones operators (telcos) to maximize their effectiveness and improve their business. Data mining algorithms can run over data produced by mobile phones usage (e.g. image, video, text and logs files) to discover user's preferences and predict the most likely (to be purchased) offer for each individual customer. One of the main challenges is the reduction of the learning time and cost of these automatic tasks. In this paper we discuss an experiment where a commercial offer is composed by a small picture augmented with a short text describing the offer itself. Each customer's purchase is properly logged with all relevant information. Upon arrival of new items we need to learn who the best customers (prospects) for each item are, that is, the ones most likely to be interested in purchasing that specific item. Such learning activity is time consuming and, in our specific case, is not applicable given the large number of new items arriving every day. Basically, given the current customer base we are not able to learn on all new items. Thus, we need somehow to select among those new items to identify the best candidates. We do so by using a joint analysis between visual features and text to estimate how good each new item could be, that is, whether or not is worth to learn on it. Preliminary results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach to improve classical data mining techniques.

Optical Bit-Plane-Based 3D-JST Cryptography Algorithm With Cascaded 2D-FrFT Encryption for Efficient and Secure HEVC Communication

The rapid growth of multimedia communication systems has expanded the High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) security applications precipitously. Therefore, there is an urgent, elevated need to protect and secure the HEVC content during streaming and communication over insecure channels to ensure the privacy of HEVC data against intruders and attackers. This paper introduces an optical HEVC cipher algorithm based on bit-plane 3D-JST (Three-Dimensional Jigsaw Transform) and multistage 2D-FrFT (Two-Dimensional Fractional Fourier Transform) encryption. The main advantage of employing 3D-JST is its unitary transform that has an inverse transform used to reorganize the HEVC frame-blocks in an indiscriminately way. The proposed algorithm embraces the cascaded 2D-FrFT encryption in the optical domain using a single arbitrary phase code;to be executed all optically with a lone lens. The suggested algorithm utilizes the two 2D-FrFT stages with distinct kernels in mutually dimensions separated by employing the arbitrary phase code. A foregoing bit-plane permutation stage is conducted on the input HEVC frames before the 3D-JST and 2D-FrFT processes to accomplish a high robustness and security level. To validate the efficacy of the proposed cryptography algorithm for secure HEVC streaming, a comprehensive evaluation framework has been introduced and followed to (a) test HEVC streams against different statistical cryptographic metrics, (b) compare the proposed algorithm with recent related works whether optical-based or digital-based algorithms and (c) study the impact of different security attacks on its performance. The evaluation results show a secure and efficient proposed cryptography algorithm that outperforms the conventional and related cryptography algorithms in terms of all examined evaluation metrics.

Mobile 3D television is a new form of media experience, which combines the freedom of mobility with the greater realism of presenting visual scenes in 3D. Achieving this combination is a challenging task as greater viewing experience has to be achieved with the limited resources of the mobile delivery channel such as limited bandwidth and power constrained handheld player. This challenge sets need for tight optimization of the overall mobile 3DTV system. Presence of depth and compression artifacts in the played 3D video are two major factors that influence viewer's subjective quality of experience and satisfaction. The primary goal of this study has been to examine the influence of varying depth and compression artifacts on the subjective quality of experience for mobile 3D video content. In addition, the influence of the studied variables on simulator sickness symptoms has been studied and vocabulary-based descriptive quality of experience has been conducted for a sub-set of variables in order to understand the perceptual characteristics in detail. In the experiment, 30 participants have evaluated the overall quality of different 3D video contents with varying depth ranges and compressed with varying quantization parameters. The test video content has been presented on a portable autostereoscopic LCD display with horizontal double density pixel arrangement. The results of the psychometric study indicate that compression artifacts are a dominant factor determining the quality of experience compared to varying depth range. More specifically, contents with strong compression has been rejected by the viewers and deemed unacceptable. The results of descriptive study confirm the dominance of visible spatial artifacts along the added value of depth for artifact-free content. The level of visual discomfort has been determined as not offending.

In recent years there has been a rapid increase in the size of video and image databases. Effective searching and retrieving of images from these databases is a significant current research area. In particular, there is a growing interest in query capabilities based on semantic image features such as objects, locations, and materials, known as content-based image retrieval. This study investigated mechanisms for identifying materials present in an image. These capabilities provide additional information impacting conditional probabilities about images (e. g. objects made of steel are more likely to be buildings). These capabilities are useful in Building Information Modeling (BIM) and in automatic enrichment of images. I2T methodologies are a way to enrich an image by generating text descriptions based on image analysis. In this work, a learning model is trained to detect certain materials in images. To train the model, an image dataset was constructed containing single material images of bricks, cloth, grass, sand, stones, and wood. For generalization purposes, an additional set of 50 images containing multiple materials (some not used in training) was constructed. Two different supervised learning classification models were investigated: a single multi-class SVM classifier, and multiple binary SVM classifiers (one per material). Image features included Gabor filter parameters for texture, and color histogram data for RGB components. All classification accuracy scores using the SVM-based method were above 85%. The second model helped in gathering more information from the images since it assigned multiple classes to the images. A framework for the I2T methodology is presented.
