In order to guarantee the best user experience throughout different network access technologies with dynamically varying network conditions, it is fundamental to enable proper reception of the multimedia content. To overcome the limitations/deficiencies of evaluated adaptive streaming algorithms (such as slow rate adaptation at stable network conditions), we propose an Advanced Rate Adaptation algorithm (ARA, in the following text) and test it under various network scenarios. The algorithm is implemented as a part of the MPEG DASH compliant client.

In this paper we present a novel approach for personal photo album management. Pictures are analyzed and described in three representation spaces, namely, faces, background and time of capture. Faces are automatically detected and rectified using a probabilistic feature extraction technique. Face representation is then produced by computing PCA (Principal Component Analysis). Backgrounds are represented with low-level visual features based on RGB histogram and Gabor filter bank. Temporal data is obtained through the extraction of EXIF (Exchangeable image file format) data. Each image in the collection is then automatically organized using a mean-shift clustering technique. While many systems manage faces and typically allow queries about them we use a common approach to manage multiple aspects, that is, queries regarding people, time and background are dealt with in a homogenous way. We report experimental results on a realistic set, i.e., a personal photo album, of about 2000 images where automatic detection and rectification of faces lead to approximately 800 faces. Significance of clustering has been evaluated and results are very interesting.

Internet is facing a huge change with the increasing penetration of voice terminals and new P2P overlay networks. These changes hit on their hardest to access networks which on the same time need to cope with new stringent requirements of real-time traffic and increased volumes of P2P traffic. These two facts bring urgent need for differentiation of traffic in access networks - not only downstream hut also upstream. Majority of upstream traffic is metafile systems like BitTorrent and Gnutella which distribute the file content in overlay manner to each and every subscriber in metafile system. This brings new challenges for handling the traffic: i) from the user perspective, co-operation within the overlay community but still controlling the resource usage, and ii) from the network provider perspective, minimal waste of scarce access network resources. We show a measurement study of differentiation of IP traffic with goal to minimize the delay of real-time traffic and at the same time to minimize the packet loss of P2P traffic. Our results show that proper grouping of traffic is important at both ends of accesslink.

We propose a new approach to automate document image layout extraction for an object-oriented database feature population using rapid low level feature analysis, preclassification and predictive coding. The layout information comprised of region location and classification data is transformed into 'feature object(s)'. The information is then fed into an intelligent document image retrieval system (IDIR) to be utilized in document retrieval schemes. The IDIR system consists of user interface, object-oriented database and a variety of document image analysis algorithms. In this paper the object-oriented storage model and the database system are presented in formal and functional domains. Moreover, the graphical user interface and a visual document image browser are described. The document analysis techniques used at document characterization are also presented. In this context the documents consist of text, picture and other media (possibly embedded) data. Documents are stored in the database as document, page and region objects. Our test system has been implemented and tested using a document database of 10 000 documents.

multimedia data, which are direct reflections of the real world, have unlimited semantic interpretations within different application domains. In order to reuse information resources, in this paper, we provide a layered architecture of multimedia schema - raw multimedia layer, domain knowledge layer, and user profile layer. Raw multimedia layer provides non-semantic management of data, including storage allocations, buffer algorithms and strategies, and multimedia preprocessing facilities. Domain knowledge layer provides semantic-oriented management and access of multimedia data. Different domains can utilize different knowledge bases to support semantic interpretations. We use Frame and Semantic Network as the representation models for domain knowledge. content-based retrievals can be performed on different levels of visual object constructions or concept abstractions. Furthermore, since different individual users may have different interpretations for fuzzy specifications in their queries, user profiles are created and used to support fuzzy retrievals of multimedia data.

We propose a new index structure, called the HG-tree, to support content-based retrieval in multimedia databases. Our goals are twofold: increasing the storage utilization and decreasing the directory coverage of the index tree. The first goal is achieved by absorbing splitting if possible, and when splitting is necessary, converting two nodes to three. This is done by proposing a good ordering on the directory nodes. The second goal is achieved by representing the directory regions compactly. We note that there is a trade-off between above two design goals, but the HG-tree is so flexible that it can control the trade-off. We present the design of our index tree and associated algorithms. In addition, we report the results of a series of tests, comparing the proposed index tree with the buddy-tree, which is one of the most successful access methods for a multidimensional space. The results show the superiority of our method.

This article describes primarily the development and empiric validation of a design for security warning messages on smartphones for primary school children (7-10 years old). Our design approach for security warnings for children uses a specific character and is based on recommendations of a paediatrician expert. The design criteria are adapted to children's skills, e. g. their visual, acoustic, and haptic perception and their literacy. The developed security warnings are prototypically implemented in an iOS application (on the iPhone 3G/4G) where children are warned by a simulated anti-malware background service, while they are busy with another task. For the evaluation we select methods for empiric validation of the design approach from the field of usability testing ("think aloud" test, questionnaires, log-files, etc.). Our security warnings prototype is evaluated in an empiric user study with 13 primary school children, aged between 8 and 9 years and of different gender (5 girls, 8 boys). The evaluation analysis shows, that nearly all children liked the design of our security warnings. Surprisingly, on several security warning messages most of the children react in the right way after reading the warning, although the meaning couldn't be interpreted in the right way. Another interesting result is, that several children relate specific information, e. g. update, to a specific character. Furthermore, it could be seen that most of the primary school test candidates have little awareness of security threats on smartphones. It is a very strong argument to develop e. g. tutorials or websites in order to raise awareness and teach children how to recognize security threats and how to react to them. Our design approach of security warnings for children's smartphones can be a basis for warning on other systems or applications like tutorials, which are used by children. A fundamental task in video analysis is to organize and index multimedia data in a meaningful manner so as to facilitate user access for tasks such as browsing and retrieval. This paper addresses the problem of automatic index generation of movie databases based on audiovisual information. In particular, given a movie we first extract key movie events including two-speaker dialog scenes, multiple-speaker dialog scenes and hybrid scenes by using the proposed window-based sweep algorithm and the K-means clustering algorithm. Following event detection, the identity of each individual speaker in a dialog scene is recognized based on a statistical maximum likelihood approach. The identification relies on the likelihood ratio calculation between the incoming speech data and Gaussian mixture models of the speakers and the background. It is evident that the event and the speaker identity information will serve as a crucial part of the movie index table. Preliminary experimental results show that, by integrating multiple media information, we can obtain robust and meaningful event detection and speaker identification results.

We address the problem of automatically extracting visual indexes from videos, in order to provide sophisticated access methods to the contents of a video server. We focus on two tasks, namely the decomposition of a video clip into uniform segments (shots), and the characterization of each shot by camera motion parameters. For the first task we use a Bayesian classification approach to detecting scene cuts by analyzing motion vectors. For the second task a least-squares fitting procedure determines the pan/tilt/zoom camera parameters. In order to guarantee the highest processing speed, all techniques process and analyze directly MPEG-1 motion vectors, without need for video decompression. Experimental results are reported for a database of news video clips.
