In this paper, a new multimedia joint fingerprinting and encryption (JFE) scheme embedded into the advanced access content system (AACS) is proposed. Like other security-related systems, there exist some security threats to the proposed framework To cope with these difficulties, the contributions of this paper include: (i) we apply multimedia encryption at different points to resist some attacks points,and (ii) we propose rewritable fingerprint embedding (RFE) to deal with some multi-point collusion attacks. Experimental results are provided to demonstrate the proposed AACS-compatible JFE method.

The digital-content market is urging better pricing and value-for-money for industry products and services. This is clearly evident in the recent price policies of majors. Production costs must be drastically reduced without affecting product quality. content providers, aggregators and distributors constantly need to adopt innovative means of increasing efficiency in order to reduce cost. Possible solutions to this challenge could be found by automating, accelerating and restructuring production processes. AXMEDIS architecture and tools aim at reaching those results by: (i) reducing costs for content production with artificial intelligence algorithms for content composition, formatting, protection and workflow management, (ii) reducing distribution and integration costs, increasing accessibility, with a P2P platform at B2B level integrating content management systems and workflows, (iii) providing algorithms and tools for innovative and flexible Digital Rights Management, exploiting MPEG-21 and overcoming its limits, supporting several business and transactions models. AXMEDIS is a large IST FP6 Integrated Project on Research and Development.

Images are a much more powerful medium of expression than text, as the adage says: "One picture is worth a thousand words." It is because compared with text consisting of an array of words, an image has more degrees of freedom and therefore a more complicated structure. However, the less limited structure of images presents researchers in the computer vision community a tough task of teaching machines to understand and organize images, especially when a limit number of learning examples and background knowledge are given. The advance of internet and web technology in the past decade has changed the way human gain knowledge. People, hence, can exchange knowledge with others by discussing and contributing information on the web. As a result, the web pages in the internet have become a living and growing source of information. One is therefore tempted to wonder whether machines can learn from the web knowledge base as well. Indeed, it is possible to make computer learn from the internet and provide human with more meaningful knowledge. In this work, we explore this novel possibility on image understanding applied to semantic image search. We exploit web resources to obtain links from images to keywords and a semantic ontology constituting human's general knowledge. The former maps visual content to related text in contrast to the traditional way of associating images with surrounding text;the latter provides relations between concepts for machines to understand to what extent and in what sense an image is close to the image search query. With the aid of these two tools, the resulting image search system is thus content-based and moreover, organized. The returned images are ranked and organized such that semantically similar images are grouped together and given a rank based on the semantic closeness to the input query. The amount of digital images taken by the average consumer is consistently increasing. People enjoy the convenience of storing and sharing their pictures through online (digital) and offline (traditional) media. A set of pictures can be uploaded to: online photo services, web blogs and social network websites. Alternatively, these images can be used to generate: prints, cards, photo books or other photo products. Through uploading and sharing, images are easily transferred from one format to another. And often, a different set of associated content (text, tags) is created across formats. For example, on his web blog, a user may journal his experiences of his recent travel;on his social network website, his friends tag and comment on the pictures;in his online photo album, some pictures are titled and keyword-tagged. When the user wants to tell a complete story, perhaps in a photo book, he must collect, across all formats: the pictures, writings and comments, etc. and organize them in a book format. The user has to arrange the content of his trip in each format. The arrangement, the associations between the images, tags, keywords and text, cannot be shared with other formats. In this paper, we propose a system that allows the content to be easily created and shared across various digital media formats. We define a uniformed data association structure to connect: images, documents, comments, tags, keywords and other data. This content structure allows the user to switch representation formats without reediting. The framework under each format can emphasize (display or hide) content elements based on preference. For example, a slide show view will emphasize the display of pictures with limited text;a blog view will display highlighted images and journal text;and the photo book will try to fit in all images and text content. As the video streaming traffic in mobile networks is increasing, improving the content delivery process becomes crucial, e.g., by utilizing edge computing support. At an edge node, we can deploy adaptive bitrate (ABR) algorithms with a better understanding of network behavior and access to radio and player metrics. In this work, we present ECAS-ML, Edge Assisted Adaptation Scheme for HTTP Adaptive Streaming with Machine Learning. ECAS-ML focuses on managing the tradeoff among bitrate, segment switches and stalls to achieve a higher quality of experience (QoE). For that purpose, we use machine learning techniques to analyze radio throughput traces and predict the best parameters of our algorithm to achieve better performance. The results show that ECAS-ML outperforms other client-based and edge-based ABR algorithms.

content streaming is the dominant application in today's Internet, which is typically distributed via content delivery networks (CDNs). CDNs usually use caching as a means to reduce user access latency so as to enable faster content downloads. Typical analysis of caching systems either focuses on content admission, which decides whether to cache a content, or content eviction to decide which content to evict when the cache is full. This paper instead proposes a novel framework that can simultaneously learn both content admission and content eviction for caching in CDNs. To attain this goal, we first put forward a lightweight architecture for content next request time prediction. We then leverage reinforcement learning (RL) along with the prediction to learn the time-varying content popularities for content admission, and develop a simple threshold-based model for content eviction. We call this new algorithm RL-Belady (RLB). In addition, we address several key challenges to design learning-based caching algorithms, including how to guarantee lightweight training and prediction with both content eviction and admission in consideration, limit memory overhead, reduce randomness and improve robustness in RL stochastic optimization. Our evaluation results using 3 production CDN datasets show that RLB can consistently outperform state-of-the-art methods with dramatically reduced running time and modest overhead.

Fundamental tradeoffs in distributed algorithms for rate adaptive multimedia streams

Rate adaptive multimedia streams are streaming media connections where the encoding rate is adjusted dynamically (with corresponding changes in media content resolution) in response to changing levels of congestion along the connection. The field of optimization based congestion control has yielded sophisticated distributed algorithms for resource allocation among competing elastic streams. In this work we study the fundamental tradeoffs for a class of optimization based distributed algorithms for rate adaptive streams, building on our earlier work. We focus on three tradeoffs: i) the tradeoff between maximizing client average quality of service (QoS) and client fairness, ii) the tradeoff between granularity of control (both temporal and spatial) and QoS, and iii) the tradeoff between maximizing the received volume and minimizing the fluctuations in received rate. These tradeoffs are illustrated through extensive simulation results using ns-2.

Mobile contact-less fingerprint scanners can be very important tools for the forensic investigation of crime scenes. To be admissible in court, data and the collection process must adhere to rules w.r.t. technology and procedures of acquisition, processing and the conclusions drawn from that evidence. Currently, no overall accepted benchmarking methodology is used to support some of the rules regarding the localisation, acquisition and pre-processing using contact-less fingerprint scanners. Benchmarking is seen essential to rate those devices according to their usefulness for investigating crime scenes. Our main contribution is a revised version of our extensible framework for methodological benchmarking of contact-less fingerprint scanners using a collection of extensible categories and items. The suggested main categories describing a contact-less fingerprint scanner are properties of forensic country-specific legal requirements, technical properties, application-related aspects, input sensory technology, pre-processing algorithm, tested object and materials. Using those it is possible to benchmark fingerprint scanners and describe the setup and the resulting data. Additionally, benchmarking profiles for different usage scenarios are defined. First results for all suggested benchmarking properties, which will be presented in detail in the final paper, were gained using an industrial device (FRT MicroProf200) and conducting 18 tests on 10 different materials.

The extensive amount of video data stored on available media (hard and optical disks) necessitates video content analysis, which is a cornerstone for different user-friendly applications, such as, smart video retrieval and intelligent video summarization. This paper aims at finding a unified and efficient framework for court-net sports video analysis. We concentrate on techniques that are generally applicable for more than one sports type to come to a unified approach. To this end, our framework employs the concept of multi-level analysis, where a novel 3-D camera modeling is utilized to bridge the gap between the object-level and the scene-level analysis. The new 3-D camera modeling is based on collecting features points from two planes, which are perpendicular to each other, so that a true 3-D reference is obtained. Another important contribution is a new tracking algorithm for the objects (i.e. players). The algorithm can track up to four players simultaneously. The complete system contributes to summarization by various forms of information, of which the most important are the moving trajectory and real-speed of each player, as well as 3-D height information of objects and the semantic event segments in a game. We illustrate the performance of the proposed system by evaluating it for a variety of court-net sports videos containing badminton, tennis and volleyball, and we show that the feature detection performance is above 92% and events detection about 90%.

The new MPEG-4 Audio standard provides two toolsets for synthetic Audio generation, Audio processing and multimedia content description called Structured Audio (SA) and BInary Format for Scenes (BIFS). Moving from a systematic analysis of SA and from the implementation of an efficient SA decoder, this paper describes the design of a virtual DSP architecture able to exploit the data level parallelism contained in many typical audio processing algorithms. The proposed virtual DSP architecture shows good performance on general purpose platforms and can be easily adapted and optimized for parallel superscalar devices. The porting and results on a V-LIW DSP device confirm the effectiveness and flexibility of the approach, particularly suitable for standalone embedded solutions.
