With the increased emphasis on reducing the cost and time to market of new materials, the need for analytical tools that enable the virtual design and optimization of materials throughout their processing - internal structure – property - performance envelope, along with the capturing and storing of the associated material and model information across its lifecycle, has become critical. This need is also fueled by the demands for higher efficiency in material testing;consistency, quality and traceability of data;product design;engineering analysis;as well as control of access to proprietary or sensitive information. Fortunately, material information management systems and physics-based multiscale modeling methods have kept pace with the growing user demands. Herein, recent efforts to develop a set of Python functions that exchange information between NASA GRC’s Integrated multiscale Micromechanics Analysis Code (ImMAC) software toolset and its Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME), Granta MI® database schema is presented. The goal is to enable seamless coupling between both test data and simulation data, which is captured and tracked automatically within Granta MI®, with full model pedigree information. These tools, and this type of linkage, are foundational to realizing the full potential of ICME, in which materials processing, microstructure, properties, and performance are coupled to enable application-driven design and optimization of materials and structures. © 2018, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. Finite impulse response (FIR) models are very popular in process industries because of their simple model structure, flexibility to explain arbitrary complex stable linear dynamics and finally their ease of implementation in on-line applications. In general, identification of FIR models requires large number of parameters to be estimated. In case of systems with multiple time scales, the length of FIR model structure under conventional uniform sampling becomes arbitrarily high due to simultaneous presence of fast and slow dynamics. This results in more variability in the estimated parameters when the conventional methods such as ordinary least squares are used. In this work, the FIR model estimation problem is formulated as a sparse optimization problem, where the sparse representation of impulse response coefficients for linear-time invariant multiscale systems in the time-frequency domain is exploited in order to explain the overall FIR model effectively with fewer number of coefficients and thereby incurring less variability in the estimated parameters. Increasing demand in higher bandwidth chip-to chip communications have resulted in challenges related to modelling and optimization of their electrical performance due to CPU intensive simulations arising from multiscale structures. Conventional approaches use various approximations to either reduce the design complexity or reduce the simulation time, however, this can lead to inaccurate models and sub-optimal designs. In this paper, we address this problem by using machine learning based techniques and propose a Bayesian framework to model and optimize interconnects in high-speed channels in an accurate yet efficient fashion.

Over the years, image registration has been largely employed in medical applications, robotics and geophysics. More recently, it has increasingly drawn attention of security and defense industries, particularly aiming at threat detection automation. This paper first introduces a short overview of mathematical methods for image registration, with a focus on variational approaches. In a second part, a specific registration task is presented: the optimal alignment between X-ray scans of an inspected vehicle and an empty reference of the same car model. Indeed, while being scanned by dedicated imaging systems, the car speed is not necessarily constant which may entail non-rigid deformations in the resulting image. The paper simply addresses this issue by applying a rigid transform on the reference image before using the variational framework solved in one dimension. For convergence and speed purposes, line-search techniques and a multiscale approach are used.

Part of the optimization steps for additive manufacturing is related to the correct understanding of the mechanical behavior of the powder used in the process. Obtain this understanding based purely on experiments might be a difficult and sometimes prohibitive task. A particle-based numerical tool can provide critical information for correct understanding of powder deposition process. Numerical simulations through the Discrete Element Method (DEM) provide a useful mean to investigate the additive manufacturing process, given the possibility to study particle-scale information that are difficult to access experimentally. The characteristics of the recoated powder bed are investigated in the packed bed region and onto the manufactured part using PA12 commercial powder. Particle size distribution, contact and non-contact cohesive forces are incorporated in the numerical model. Furthermore, the non-spherical shape of real particles is taken explicitly into account in numerical simulations. A blade-type recoating system is used to form the powder bed and its roughness is calculated. Experimental measurements are performed by fringe projection. Several areas of the recoated powder layers can be scanned with this optical measurement method. Thus, the analyzed surface roughness can be compared with the simulated quantities to validate the numerical model. The sintered part is modelled as a prescribed rigid static region in the simulated system. The powder recoated in the sintered region may have different characteristics (packing, roughness) compared to the powder bed region. Recoating process is modelled using two different shapes for the sintered region. The amount of material recoated and the surface roughness are then calculated for the powder bed as well as for the sintered region.

The 2017 edition of the IEEE International conference on Computational Electromagnetics (IEEE ICCEM2017) was successfully held in Kumamoto, Japan, from March 8, 2017 to March 10, 2017. This conference offers researchers and engineers to share their latest advances in numerical algorithms, modeling methods, optimization tools, education in electromagnetics (EMs), and applications across the whole EMspectra. The IEEE ICCEM 2017 was fully sponsored by the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S) and technically sponsored by the IEEE AP-S Fukuoka Chapter, Technical Committees on Antennas and Propagation (Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineering (IEICE) Communications Society), and EM Theory (IEICE Electronics Society) and Electronics Simulation Technology (IEICE Electronics Society) of the IEICE of Japan. In the conference, 155 presentations including keynote speeches and invited talks were presented from 17 countries/regions such as North America, Europe, and Asia–Pacific regions. In total, 27% of the presented papers are related to computational EM, 25% are antennas, 12% are EM applications, and 10% are simulation techniques. In addition to these topics, propagation, EM education, and wireless systems were also presented. This Special Section is related to the talks on the abovementioned topics in the IEEE ICCEM2017. The published papers are extended papers from the conference papers. Now, we are happy to accept these interesting papers after the strict review process.
