The paper describes the adaptation of PHM models, methods and algorithms to solve prognosis problems for biomechanical systems, in particular, prognosis of Heart Failure, problems of antiarrhythmic electrical therapy optimization of CRT devices (cardiac resynchronization therapy devices). As the basis for making prognosis in biomechanical systems and biomechanical systems with implantable electronics are the multiscale physical models of heart failure and biophysics of membranes of cardiomyocytes. At the macroscopic level, the mathematical model of ECG analyzing, allowing to determine the evolution equations of predictors of heart failure is developed. Computing algorithms of RUL analog as the time parameter, expressed by the number of cardiac cycles required to achieve predicted values of predictors or heart failure boundaries, are defined and constructed. The paper also gives a rigorous justification of the thesis about the effectiveness of PHM methods in problems of prognosis of atrial fibrillations, ventricular arrhythmia, and prognosis of sudden heart death. The results of using the prognostic methods and estimations of time to reach the borders of heart failure are demonstrated using the modified portable PHM ECG recorder in 12 leads. Modified recorder contains built-recognizing automata, supported and retrains on a remote computing PHM cluster. The basic principles of interaction between remote computing a cluster with recognizing automata of ECG recorder are described. At the same time recognizing automata manage computational cores of remote cluster, in its turn the computing cores and logic modules of the cluster are determined automatic operation and the duration of the ECG recording. Thus, the task of optimizing the duration of monitoring is solved. Also, the results of clinical trials of methods and prognosis algorithms are demonstrated. © 2016 IEEE.

Electromagnetic sensing and system-level design problems are often multiscale and very challenging to solve. They remain a significant barrier to system-level sensing and design optimization for a foreseeable future. Such multiscale problems often contain three electrical scales, i.e., the fine scale (geometrical feature size much smaller than a wavelength), the coarse scale (geometrical feature size greater than a wavelength), and the intermediate scale between the two extremes. Most existing commercial solvers are based on single methodologies (such as finite element method or finite-difference time-domain method), and are unable to solve large multiscale problems. We will present our recent work in solving realistic multiscale system-level EM design simulation problems in time domain. The discontinuous Galerkin method is used as the fundamental framework for interfacing multiple scales with finite-element method, spectral element method, and finite difference method. Numerical results show significant advantages of the multiscale method.

Systems biologists are developing increasingly large models of metabolism and integrated models of metabolism and macromolecular expression. These Metabolic Expression (ME) models lead to sequences of multiscale linear programs for which small solution values of order 10(-6) to 10(-10) are meaningful. Standard LP solvers do not give sufficiently accurate solutions, and exact simplex solvers are extremely slow. We investigate whether double-precision and quadrupleprecision simplex solvers can together achieve reliability at acceptable cost. A double-precision LP solver often provides a reasonably good starting point for a Quad simplex solver. On a range of multiscale examples we find that 34-digit Quad floating-point achieves exceptionally small primal and dual infeasibilities (of order 10(-30)) when no more than 10(-15) is requested. On a significant ME model we also observe robustness in almost all (even small) solution values following relative perturbations of order 10(-6) to non-integer data values. Double and Quad Fortran 77 implementations of the linear and nonlinear optimization solver MINOS are available upon request.

Statistically Similar Representative Volume Element (SSRVE) is used to simplify computational domain for microstructure representation of material in multiscale modelling. The procedure of SSRVE creation is based on optimization loop which allows to find the highest similarity between SSRVE and an original material microstructure. The objective function in this optimization is built upon computationally intensive numerical methods, including simulations of virtual material deformation, which is very time consuming. To avoid such long lasting calculations we propose to use the data farming approach to identification of SSRVE for Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) characterized by multiphase microstructure. The optimization method is based on a nature inspired approach which facilitates distribution and parallelization. The concept of SSRVE creation as well as the software architecture of the proposed solution is described in the paper in details. It is followed by examples of the results obtained for the identification of SSRVE parameters for DP steels which are widely exploited in modern automotive industry. Possible directions for further development as well as possible industrial applications are described in the conclusions.

The introduction of cellular materials models in topology optimization allows designers to achieving significant weight reductions in structural applications. However, higher material savings and increased performance can be achieved if the material and the structure topologies are concurrently designed. The objective of this paper is to incorporate and establish a design methodology to obtaining optimal macro-scale structures and the corresponding optimal meso-scale periodic material designs in continuum design domains. The proposed approach makes use of homogenization theory to establish communication bridges between both material and structural scales. The periodicity constraint makes such cellular materials manufacturable. Penalization methods are used to obtaining binary solutions in both scales. This proposed methodology is demonstrated in the design of compliant mechanisms and structures of minimum compliance. The results demonstrate potential benefits when this multi-scale design algorithm when applied to the design of ultra-lightweight structures.

multiscale electromagnetic problems occur frequently in practical applications. Unfortunately, the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method can lose its remarkable efficiency when small and large geometrical features are present simultaneously. Small geometrical features impose a fine spatial grid, increasing memory consumption and CPU time. Moreover, because of the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) stability condition, time step has to be also reduced, further increasing the overall computational cost. We propose a new method to accelerate FDTD simulations with local grid refinements. The FDTD equations for the fine region are first compressed using model order reduction. The stability limit of the resulting equations is extended to match the stability limit of the coarse grid using a suitable perturbation approach. Finally, the reduced models of the fine regions are embedded into the main coarse grid. Owing to their enhanced stability, the whole simulation can be run at the large time step supported by the coarse grid. The proposed technique thus provides a way to perform stable FDTD simulations with subgridding at the CFL limit of the coarse grid. A numerical example demonstrates the remarkable speed-ups that can be obtained with the proposed method with respect to FDTD and spatial subgridding.

Signal processing on graphs is an emerging field that attracts increasing attention. For applications such as multiscale transforms on graphs, it is often necessary to get a coarsened version of graph signal with its underlying graph. However, most of the existing methods use only topology information but no property of graph signals to complete the process. In this paper, we propose a novel graph signal coarsening method with spectral invariance, which means both the spectrum of the graph and the spectrum of the graph signal are approximately kept invariant. The problem is formulated into an optimization problem and is solved by projected subgradient method. Experiment results verify the effectiveness of the coarsening method.

Vessel segmentation plays an important role in medical image analysis. Irrespective of the modality used, the common challenge in all vessel tracking methods is scale variability, in other words, the dependence on the size of the vessels, which is unknown a priori. Despite few approaches that attempts to perform scale selection and segmentation simultaneously, the common approach is to perform multiscale analysis and fuse the results afterwards via a scale selection mechanism. Recently, Mirzaalian et al. proposed to use MRFs for joint scale selection and vessel segmentation in 2D retinal images. In this study, we have assessed the 3D version of this method in comparison with the conventional multiscale approach augmented with novel automatic threshold selection and image guided morphological filtering, using the well-known Hessian based method. The assessment has been done quantitatively using IRCAD dataset and qualitatively by studying the output vessel masks. The results indicate that the MRF based approach does not improve the results significantly in 3D liver vessel segmentation task compared to conventional multiscale approach.
