As engineers design ever more complex systems, such as bionanotechnology, it is particularly difficult for engineers to navigate the influences of parameters to design across multiple scales. We introduce a software tool that contains graphical interface modules that display multiple inputs and outputs simultaneously in real-time, across multiple scales of interest. To assess the utility of real-time feedback in the tool, the tool is validated through user studies involving counterbalanced sequences of optimization tasks with varying complexity and either real-time or delayed feedback. Real-time feedback consistently improved a user's ability to find better designs and the benefit increased as task complexity grew. Our scientific contribution is a greater understanding of how users search and understand complex design spaces. Users in the real-time condition were made fewer changes to designs each iteration and identifying such strategies could inform agent-based algorithms. Findings aid complex systems applications including virtual experiments, reverse engineering, and scientific discovery.

Vessel segmentation plays an important role in medical image analysis. Irrespective of the modality used, the common challenge in all vessel tracking methods is scale variability, in other words, the dependence on the size of the vessels, which is unknown a priori. Despite few approaches that attempts to perform scale selection and segmentation simultaneously, the common approach is to perform multiscale analysis and fuse the results afterwards via a scale selection mechanism. Recently, Mirzaalian et al. proposed to use MRFs for joint scale selection and vessel segmentation in 2D retinal images. In this study, we have assessed the 3D version of this method in comparison with the conventional multiscale approach augmented with novel automatic threshold selection and image guided morphological filtering, using the well-known Hessian based method. The assessment has been done quantitatively using IRCAD dataset and qualitatively by studying the output vessel masks. The results indicate that the MRF based approach does not improve the results significantly in 3D liver vessel segmentation task compared to conventional multiscale approach.

The focus of this contribution is on a novel, improved technique for energy minimization in atomic simulations and its adaption to a variationally consistent formulation of the quasicontinuum (QC) method. The optimization algorithm called FIRE for Fast Inertial Relaxation Engine can be understood as a modification of the Steepest Descent (SD) method, which improves SD by accelerating the system in the direction of the force, making the minimization more aggressive. The performance of FIRE is assessed in the example of nanopillar compression with respect to efficiency and stability against competitive optimization methods.

Structures with several dimensional length-scales can be integrated with ceramic microsystems by using ceramic processing methods that produce components with novel functions. For example, structures optimized for heat transfer can be incorporated with structures designed for gas separation to produce microreactors in low cost, compact packages. Examples of incorporating multiple fanning methods with, and without, one-step densification approaches will be described. This presentation will describe several examples of components incorporating multiscale structures. Typical applications are power electronic heat management, microreactors for chemical processing, and industrial heat exchangers. Features of design optimization methods that are unique to ceramic microsystems will be described. The objective of the presentation is to demonstrate the potential for ceramic microsystems in a broad range of applications and describe the benefits and challenges associated with their design, fabrication, and operation. © Copyright Honeywell Federal Manufacturing & Technologies LLC, 2011.

In this study, the mechanical and tribological properties of Ti6Al4V-alloy/Al2O3 Functionally Graded Materials (FGM) were evaluated through multiscale indentation tests and metallographic analysis. The FGM, consisting of 11 uniform layers graded in 10% composition steps of 1 mm thickness each, was generated by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) technique with a non-uniform sintering temperature. Metallographic analyses evidenced the presence of a Ti3Al intermetallic phase at the metal/ceramic interface of the intermediate FGM layers. Nano and micro-scale indentation tests were performed with a NanoTest Indenter (Micro Materials Ltd., Wrexham, U.K.), while an ad hoc set-up was designed and realized to characterize the FGM at the macroscopic scale. Elastic and inelastic material properties have been obtained on both the cross-section and the surfaces of the external pure metal and pure ceramic layers. The mechanical characterization exhibited the capability to quantify the problems related to the sintering techniques already evidenced in the metallographic analyses. The lack of an optimal sintering temperature led to sintering defects that most likely resulted in imperfect interfaces. This work proved that the combination of advanced micro and nano mechanical characterization techniques in a multiscale investigation framework represents a reliable feedback for the development and optimization of the SPS as a process for the fabrication of FGM.

This paper describes the construction of a new multiresolutional decomposition with applications to image compression. The proposed method designs sparsity-distortion-optimized orthonormal transforms applied in wavelet domain to arrive at a multiresolutional representation which we term the Sparse Multiresolutional Transform (SMT). Our optimization operates over sub-bands of given orientation and exploits the inter-scale and intra-scale dependencies of wavelet coefficients over image singularities. The resulting SMT is substantially sparser than the wavelet transform and leads to compaction that can be exploited by well-known coefficient coders. Our construction deviates from the literature, which mainly focuses on model-based methods, by offering a data-driven optimization of wavelet representations. Simulation experiments show that the proposed method consistently offers better performance compared to the original wavelet-representation and can reach up to 1dB improvements within state-of-the-art coefficient coders.

Advanced Dynamics has developed a comprehensive and integrated software toolset, ASTE-P, for mutidisciplinary, multiphysics, multiscale and multifidelity analysis and design optimization (4MAO) of aerospace vehicles, and the module of pure particle method (PPM) is one of the key modules in ASTE-P for fluid-structure interaction applications. PPM is similar to the Smooth Particle Hydrodynamic (SPH) method in a sense that the solutions are solved on the particles. But unlike SPH, instead of a kernel function, PPM uses least square technique to interpolate properties to the particles. PPM can handle complex fluid flows and it is also very convenient to treat the fluid-solid boundaries, thus making it a very powerful method for solving fluid-structure interaction and aeroelastic problems. In addition, a novel Reduced-Order Model (ROM) based on the Harmonic Balance (HB) methodology is developed in the context of the meshless, particle-based methods. The use of such techniques can greatly reduce the computational time for problems that can be considered time-periodic, which is frequently observed in aeroelastic problems such as flutter, limit cycle oscillations (LCO), etc. Such methods improve the robustness of the particle solver as well as making it computationally efficient. © 2010 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. The observations in many applications consist of counts of discrete events, such as photons hitting a detector, which cannot be effectively modeled using an additive bounded or Gaussian noise model, and instead require a Poisson noise model. As a result, accurate reconstruction of a spatially or temporally distributed phenomenon (f*) from Poisson data (y) cannot be accomplished by minimizing a conventional l(2)-l(1) objective function. The problem addressed in this paper is the estimation of f* from y in an inverse problem setting, where (a) the number of unknowns may potentially be larger than the number of observations and (b) f* admits a sparse representation. The optimization formulation considered in this paper uses a negative Poisson log-likelihood objective function with nonnegativity constraints (since Poisson intensities are naturally nonnegative). This paper describes computational methods for solving the constrained sparse Poisson inverse problem. In particular, the proposed approach incorporates key ideas of using quadratic separable approximations to the objective function at each iteration and computationally efficient partition-based multiscale estimation methods.
