Wireless sensornetworks represent a new generation of real-time embedded systems with significantly different communication constraints from the traditional networked systems. With their development, a new attack called a path-based Dos (PDoS) attack has appeared. In a PDoS attack, an adversary, either inside or outside the network, overwhelms sensor nodes by flooding a multi-hop end-to-end communication path with either replayed packets or injected spurious packets. In this article, we propose a solution using mobile agents which can detect PDoS attacks easily.

In this paper, we develop a new beacon-less localization scheme for non-flat surfaces for wireless sensornetworks. Simulations are conducted for a Gaussian distribution of nodes about the deployment points on the non-flat terrain, as well as a node deployment corresponding to the terrain surface characteristics. The localization errors for the proposed method, for a non-flat terrain with the Gaussian distribution of nodes and the terrain conforming distribution, are comparable to those in the case of the location discovery scheme in [1] for the flat surface. The localization errors, when the distribution of nodes corresponds to the terrain are slightly larger than when the nodes are normally distributed. The results are applicable to localization in real life wireless sensornetworks deployed over non-flat terrain.

Smart grid is the next-generation electrical power system for providing reliable, efficient, secure, and cost-effective energy generation, distribution, and consumption. For a smart grid network, communications infrastructure/protocols and wireless networking will play an important role in achieving these objectives. The communication network designing will involves detailed analysis of the communication requirements, appropriate protocol architecture, choice of the most suitable technologies, and a resultant heterogeneous network management system. Smart grid deployment is mainly about defining the necessary standards for ICT solutions. To achieve significant advantages over traditional communication technologies, smart grid also involves its collaboration with wireless sensornetworks (WSNs). Recently, WSNs can enhance various aspects of today's electric power systems that include generation, delivery, and utilization. Since communication will be through wireless channel, the security of the network/data is also to be considered. The large scale and autonomous features of a smart grid render its cyber security quite vulnerable to adversaries. This proposed manuscript will present a broader view of the smart grid networks and the various diversified fields that are integrating to create this interdisciplinary research area. This involves the use of wireless sensornetworks, communication and routing protocols, various possible architectures for smart grid networks, the potential intelligent attacks, and their countermeasures

This paper proposes and analyzes a scalable and efficient cluster based group key management protocol by introducing identity based infrastructure for secure communication in mobile wireless sensornetworks. To ensure scalability and dynamic reconfigurability, the system takes a cluster based approach by which group members are broken into clusters and leaders of clusters securely communicate with each other to agree on a group key in response to membership change and member mobility events. Through analysis we have shown that our protocol has high probability to be resilient for secure communication among mobile nodes. Finally, it is clarified that the proposed scheme is efficient for secure positioning in wireless sensor network.

The 15 papers in this special issue focus on traffic engineering for multi-layer networks. The papers can be roughly divided into the following three groups: 1) New Approaches to Traffic Engineering, 2) Multi-layer Survivability, and 3) Specific Issues. Some of the specific issues include optimal topology design, multicast flow aggregation, load balancing, traffic grooming, and Ethernet-based technology.

Generally, single path routing is simple and consumes less energy than multi-path routing, but it will cost a lot to re-delivery when the data delivery fails. However, multi-path routing supports high delivery ratio and load balancing, but its traffic is very high and the redundant traffic is burden to the whole networks. In this paper, we introduce a novel routing scheme for wireless sensornetworks, so called, the highly energy aware resilient routing scheme (HEAR). Our scheme establishes partial disjoint multi-paths to support high robustness and energy efficiency.

For emerging IPv6-based nextgeneration Network (NGN), this paper describes the needs and applications of IPv6 signaling to support Quality of Service (QoS). In particular, we identify several IPv6 features for QoS signaling. Then, we present QoS provisioning and implementation methods with IPv6 signaling.

sensors are a crucial component of any intelligent control system. Wireless sensornetworks are one of the most rapidly developing information technologies and promise to have a variety of applications in nextgenerationnetworks, Internet of Things and for mission critical and safety relevant applications. Reliability is one of the most important attribute of such systems. In the paper Markov model for reliability analyses of sensor node in wireless sensornetworks is proposed. It is shown that reliability of the sensor node depends on the strategy of it monitoring and is unimodal function of test period. For passive part of sensor node, the optimal time for test of functionality is defined. (C) 2017 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Conventional approaches to QoS (Quality of Service) provisioning in IP networks are difficult to apply in all-optical networks. This is mainly because there is no optical RAM (Random Access Memory) to store packets during contention for bandwidth, so the provision of QoS with OBS (Optical Burst Switching) is a hot issue that has been widely studied. Most of the QoS schemes guarantee the performance of high priority traffic at the cost of low priority traffic's performance. To solve this problem, a novel wavelength assignment scheme for supporting QoS in OBS networks is proposed in this paper, we give the detailed means to increase the priority of the buffed low priority bursts and show it is especially beneficial to improve networks average throughput than that of offset-time-based scheme.

Traffic patterns for mobile communicationnetworks are well known and accurately modelled. However, traffic generation behaviors for sensornetworks are often lacking in research and not well understood. We investigate one class of sensornetworks for a target tracking application using realistic sensing models and a general target motion model. Results show that the probability of arrivals for a tracking sensor network fits a quadratic curve.
