Detecting and tracking boundaries of a physical process by a large-scale sensor networks are often desirable or even required in various applications. The first step in the detection and tracking procedures is edge detection. Most of the edge detection schemes proposed for sensor networks require information on sensor locations. Also, quantitative measures by which performance of an edge detector for sensor networks can be analyzed have not been available. In this paper, edge detectors which do not require the absolute or relative location of each sensor node are proposed along with a set of metrics used for performance analysis. Detailed performance analysis results obtained through simulation, varying parameters such as sensor density, communication range, and noise level, are provided.

The next generation of wireless networks, as envisioned by recent advances in cognitive radio (CR) technologies, will be autonomic and able to adjust their configurations to changes in the communications environment. There are three types of CRs, such as IEEE 802.22 radio, multiple-radio with CR functions, and so- called fully configurable radios. Reconfigurable networks use these CRs and spectra efficiently. This paper discusses various cognitive radios from the viewpoint of re-configurable radio-information management for CR networks. We then propose a flexible and scalable network architecture for CR networks that enables management of re-configurable radio information. We classify radio information and propose the summarization of re-configuration information to enable efficient data exchanges between mobile terminals and the network. We intend to evaluate the efficiency of information services in the near future focusing on network traffic on wireless links.

SIP-based multi-party conference service (MFCS) of IETF is adopted by 3GPP2 as conferencing solution. In MFCS, the service content received by multiple participants is the same. So, it is better to use multicast to support MFCS in 3G network, where air resources are limited. In 3GPP2, broadcast multicast service (BCMCS) is standardized allowing optimization of air resources for delivery of uniform content to multiple access terminals in CDMA2000 communication system. In this paper, a new solution is proposed, wherein service mapping is set up between BCMCS and MPCS in CDMA2000 network. By utilizing BCMCS, the radio and access network's resources of the CDMA systems could be saved for MPCS.

The promises of next-generation Internet architectures are many and varied. Key among these are increased flexibility and diversity. What this translates into is increased variety not only in protocols and technology, but in the performance characteristics and services provided by these composite or heterogeneous networks. This is certainly true of the diversity of emerging networking technologies being deployed in the current and next generation Internet environments. A significant concern is the need for a generic security protocol that is not tied to particular types of layer 1 and 2 networks. Based on lessons learned from the current Internet architecture we can see that this protocol needs to be able to communicate beyond trust boundaries (i.e. the borders of Autonomous Systems). We propose a high-level architecture for such a Generic Security Protocol and use simulation to demonstrate the benefits of having inter-domain communication in the context of the next-generation public Internet.

This paper proposes and analyzes a scalable and efficient cluster based group key management protocol by introducing identity based infrastructure for secure communication in mobile wireless sensor networks. To ensure scalability and dynamic reconfigurability, the system takes a cluster based approach by which group members are broken into clusters and leaders of clusters securely communicate with each other to agree on a group key in response to membership change and member mobility events. Through analysis we have shown that our protocol has high probability to be resilient for secure communication among mobile nodes. Finally, it is clarified that the proposed scheme is efficient for secure positioning in wireless sensor network.

In current sensor scheduling schemes for target tracking in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), either based on single sensor or multiple sensors, a next tasking sensor is selected from 1-hop communication neighbors of the current tracking leader. They will fail when the target moves fast and outside the detection range of any neighbor at the next time step. In this paper a novel state-centric multi-sensor scheduling scheme (SCMSS) is presented where the multiple next tasking sensors are selected from those sensors, according to the state prediction of the target movement, that likely detect the target at the next time step. Information is exchanged between the current tracking leader and the next tasking sensors via single-hop or multi-hop minimal energy paths. A sensor that will consume minimum energy for collecting next measurements is selected from the tasking group as the new tracking leader. Simulation results show that, compared with multi-sensor scheduling algorithm with single hop configuration, SCMSS can achieve better performance with less energy cost for different target speeds.

The proliferation of Wireless LANs and the increasing integration of voice into data networks has created the potential for VoWLANs (Voice over Wireless Local Area networks). This technology has immense cost saving potential and the ability to provide better service and functionality. However, before the integration of VoWLAN is possible, handoff delays must be reduced. Currently, the connectivity transition that occurs from moving between APs (Access Points) is too long, causing poor voice quality and call dropouts. An experimental approach is used to investigate a particular handoff delay known as the scanning delay. The study concludes that the primary source of delay in the scanning process is caused by overlapping channels in the 2.4GHz band.

In this paper, we develop a new beacon-less localization scheme for non-flat surfaces for wireless sensor networks. Simulations are conducted for a Gaussian distribution of nodes about the deployment points on the non-flat terrain, as well as a node deployment corresponding to the terrain surface characteristics. The localization errors for the proposed method, for a non-flat terrain with the Gaussian distribution of nodes and the terrain conforming distribution, are comparable to those in the case of the location discovery scheme in (Lei Fang et al., 2005) for the flat surface. The localization errors, when the distribution of nodes corresponds to the terrain are slightly larger than when the nodes are normally distributed. The results are applicable to localization in real life wireless sensor networks deployed over non-flat terrain.

This paper proposes COSMOS WSN model for the power-balancing strategy. It looks for feasible solutions for power stretch of clusterheads. The method proposed is to distribute the task of data collection to some non-CH nodes in the cluster. It introduces the notion of partaker nodes. The partakers' role in a cluster is to assist the CH in the routine job of data collection. The power consumption of CHs can be reduced to various extents depending on the number of partakers.
