The quality of service (QoS) in the next generation networks (NGN) has been of a particular interest to researchers, system designers, standardization organizations and various industries affected by these networks. In this paper, we propose and outline a control and signalling model which guarantees an end-to-end QoS for multi-service traffics in the NGN networks based on IP/MPLS transport. This work is based on previous works of various standardization bodies such as PacketCable, 3GPP, ETSI, MSF, and ITU-T. The proposed model treats the RACM as a basis component for a large scale QoS guarantee architecture. A key aspect of this model lies in its capacity to integrate the MPLS traffics engineering which offers a scalability and resilience to the transport network and guarantees the requested QoS.

next generation network (NGN) is IP based broadband and integrated network of existing communication networks. This paper defines requirements of management information to perform resource admission and path computation for single-phase resource control scheme in NGN transport stratum. We also propose high-speed resource control mechanism based on parallel and single-phase scheme to minimize delay overhead between centralized resource admission control functions and transport functions.

In this paper, we present a test methodology for PSTN emulation and simulation services in order to test capabilities and features of next generation networks (NGN) elements. The main purpose of these tests is evaluation of vendorspsila equipment in single and multi-vendor environments in conjunction with the legacy PSTN network. The methodology consists of some categories each of which includes some areas and each area, as well, encompasses various test topics. This hierarchy covers a large number and different types of important test cases that should be executed over an NGN environment. We executed the test methodology over a testbed, practically. This testbed is a nationwide pilot that was designed and implemented in Iran Telecom Research Center (ITRC) and resulted in outstanding outcomes and considerations.

The standardization process of the UMTS technology has led to the development of the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). IMS provides a framework that supports the negotiation of the next generation multimedia services with QoS requirements that are envisioned for 3G networks. But even though many of these services involve the participation of multiple users in a multiparty arrangement, the delivery technology at network level is still unicast based. This approach is not optimum, in terms of transmission efficiency. In this paper, a new approach is presented proposing to use a network level multicast delivery technology for the multiparty services that are signalled through IMS. The main advantages and drawbacks related with this new approach are analyzed in the article. Finally, as a starting point in the development of the presented solution, a new SIP signalling dialogue is proposed allowing the negotiation of a generic multiparty service, and supporting at the same time the configuration of the corresponding network level multicast delivery service with QoS requirements that will be used in the user plane.

The dynamic interaction between network topologies, optical transmission systems and optical fiber designs has fuelled an impressive evolution of the optical communications industry. In this work we will reflect briefly on the evolution of telecommunications systems in order to identify the fundamental triggers. An understanding of these triggers can potentially enable early prediction of the next wave of optical fiber innovations and their respective impact back into systems and networks.

The future of communications is not only about new and "fancy" services, it also implies the improvement and simplification of day-by-day user experience. In today's mobile networks, there are neither products nor standardized solutions to achieve a functional integration and mobility between a corporate private branch exchange (PBX) based network and a public IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) network, e.g. providing value added interworked services from both networks. Some proprietary solutions are based on call forwarding mechanisms and assume two independent subscriptions, and therefore two subscriber numbers. This paper presents some solutions for this problem and proposes an approach based on the "Group registration" which paves the way for a functional integration, starting in a first step with one number service support. The proposed design limits the impact on the PBX installed basis by concentrating the new functionality in the "IMS Gateway". These latter interfaces the corporate domains by means of a User-to-Network interface. The article also presents the test bed that was implemented in order to validate the concepts and presents key considerations for the implementation.

A large-scale sensor network often requires a network wide group key for confidentiality of control messages and data reports. The group key should be updated when a certain sensor node is compromised by adversaries in a hostile environment. However, key update messages will consume much energy during hop-by-hop delivery to each sensor nodes. In this paper, we propose a new group key management scheme which minimizes communication overhead of rekeying messages. To achieve this goal, we first give detailed analysis of communication overhead of the existing logical key tree scheme. Then we present the topological key hierarchy scheme which explicitly considers sensor network topology during key tree generation. We show that our scheme can drastically reduce communication overheads of the tree based group key management in wireless sensor networks.

The cognitive radio and cognitive wireless networks paradigms are interesting candidates for the next generation self-organizing and self-reconfigurable wireless networks. In this paper we argue that the concept of cognitive resource manager as an evolution of the classical radio resource manager in the cellular networks is a promising concept to enable dynamic and distributed cross-layer in the future cognitive wireless networks. We further elaborate on the fundamental and implementation challenges which need to be solved to make the cognitive networks reality. Especially we point out the value of perfect information (VPI) should be taken in account in the real implementations. We also describe shortly, how different APIs need to support information reliability estimation.

Determining the location of objects or people in a smart space is one of the prerequisites enabling smart applications. The ideal location system makes use of existing infrastructure such as wireless LAN or cellular communication systems. However, in indoor environment typical wireless LAN systems do not provide sufficient accuracy for many smart applications and such as WLAN based location system needs to be enhanced. This paper involves proposal of a heterogeneous location system based on a combination of IEEE 802.11 WLAN and a sensor network based ultra wideband radar system. The proposed system provides greater accuracy than other proposed systems and provides the added advantage that the sensor network can be utilized for other ubiquitous computing applications.

The paper investigates the antenna design to be applied in the ESPACENET sensor node. The project involves a network of autonomous pico satellites working at a large number of communication standards and as passive radar sensors for earth observation. They would form the next generation of "eyes in the skies "; looking out for natural disasters, helping in the survey and effective utilization of natural resources and also form a seamless network of global communication which will have the potential to evolve itself with the growing demands of tomorrow's world. We discuss the need for a multiple frequency broadband antenna which would help cover a larger range of microwave frequencies enabling the antenna to work as both a communications antenna and a sensor device.
