The combination of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been considered as an attractive solution for the next generation wireless communication networks. In comparison with single-input single-output (SISO) systems, channel estimation in the MIMO scenario becomes more challenging, owing to the increased number of independent transmitter-receiver links to be estimated. In this paper, we introduce an enhanced iterative channel estimation method, which is capable of providing genetically optimized channel information for uplink multi-user MIMO OFDM receivers, approaching the optimal benchmark arrangement utilizing perfect channel knowledge. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is demonstrated by a range of numerical results under realistic scenarios.

This paper is devoted to modeling and analysis of media gateway nodes for the next generation networks based on Markov reward models. The bandwidth sharing policy with partial overlapped transmission link is considered. Calls arriving to the link that belong to VBR and ABR traffic classes, are presented as independent Poisson processes and Markov processes with constant intensity or random input stream, and exponential service delay time. Service delay time is defined according to MRM. Compression of traffic classes with partial overlapped transmission link is calculated using vector quantification. Simulation and numerical examples are shown.

In this paper, we establish a first passage time analysis for event-driven sensor networks with single hop. Our model can be regarded as a theoretical analysis for time cost of message transmission to sink node in an event-driven process in which Slotted ALOHA protocol is implemented. The first passage time T n,lambda depends on the size n of activated nodes and their transmission rate lambda. Given n, we study the optimal lambda and give the approximation radic1n n/n, further more we give the estimate of the size n from the view point of sink node. So that we can adjust the transmission rate lambda to attain the optimal expected time cost T min (n). Numerical result indicates that given the size of active nodes n, the optimal time cost of the procedure increases nearly linearly with n increasing which implies that ALOHA protocol is efficient even in dense event-driven sensor networks.

Most earlier works in the area of wireless mesh network assume a single interface being equipped in each node. In this paper, we consider the next-generation wireless mesh networks in which each node may be equipped with multiple radio interfaces, each capable of running in one of several modes, one of several channels, and each capable of supporting multiple modulations. For example, from off-the-shelf components, one can easily construct a mesh node with multiple IEEE 802.11a/b/g radio interfaces. Our goal is to address the resource planning and packet forwarding issues in such an environment. The proposed methodology is based on linear programming with network flow principles and radio channel access/interference models. Given a network topology, traffic requirements, and gateway capacities, we show how to allocate network interface cards and their channels to fully utilize channel bandwidths. The results can be used by a wireless Internet service provider to plan their networks under a hardware constraint so as to maximize their profits. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work addressing resource planning in a wireless mesh network. Our numerical results show significant improvement in terms of aggregate network throughput with moderate network-layer fairness.

Demand for the Internet services through GPRS/3 G networks is proliferating day-by-day. But low bit rate puts constraints on multimedia or mobile business services. In contrast. Wireless Local Area networks (WLANs) provide high bit rate with low deployment cost. Therefore, integration of these two complementary systems would be the focus of next generation wireless networks. However mobility and handoff management become the key issues for such integration. If a cellular operator deploys as Operator's IP network (OIN), it will be connected to GPRS at Gi interface and to the Internet through firewall. Alternatively, the Internet can be connected directly at Gi interface and OIN can be connected to the Internet. These connection mechanisms restrict on scalability due to large packet forwarding delay. In this paper, we propose a new way to integrate GPRS/UMTS, OIN and the Internet for better scalability and smaller packet delay. We deploy one gateway for users of cellular (GPRS/UMTS) and WLAN host. The gateway is in OIN and is connected directly with GGSN at Gi interface. The home agent functionalities are distributed in two level hierarchies within the OIN to reduce the packet and handoff delay. The proposed architecture would be useful for large network size.

In this work, we present a novel routing protocol for energy constrained multi-hop wireless sensor networks. The proposed mechanism exploits the broadcast nature of the wireless channel to enable cooperative relaying in an on-demand manner. It also introduces the concept of leapfrogging that aids in circumventing links with weak channels. Further, in order to achieve energy efficiency, we define a novel metric that takes into account both location as well as channel state information for next-hop selection. The protocol is completely decentralized and preliminary analysis shows that the proposed approach offers significant benefits by reducing the number of (re)transmissions required to reach a destination. This translates into network-wide energy savings that can potentially increase the network lifetime.

Smart home wireless mesh networks (SH-WMNs) have emerged to become one of the promising applications of Wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In SH-WMNs, connected dominating set (CDS) is one of candidates for clustering formation or virtual backbone construction. During the CDS construction, however, the link that has enough bandwidth to support more end-devices should be selected in order to enhance overall network throughput and reliability. Our LQ-CDS construction scheme can improve the network performance via two metrics: interference metric and bandwidth metric. The simulation results show that LQ-CDS constructs the virtual backbone with the small subset ofDS and the link that has better bandwidth.

The world telecommunications industry caters to both wireline and wireless business. In the present fourth generation (4G) wireless world rapid change is the only constant factor. The biggest paradigm change being the move from circuit switched to packet switched technologies. Voice over packet (VoP) is transforming telephony by rapidly replacing the legacy circuit-switched technology. The VoP technology unites the telephony and data worlds allowing voice, facsimile, and video traffics to be relayed over managed IP networks or corporate intranets around the world. In this paper, various aspects of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) are discussed, including the architecture for the NGMN, challenges, standards and the application areas.

This paper describes a new vision for mobility management in next generation all IP networks. We evaluate the vertical-to-horizontal handover in the proposed integration architecture for the third generation wireless communication (3G) from one side and WLAN 802.11 from the other side. In this architecture, the inter-domain management IDM module introduced is modeled and analytically studied in order to evaluate the handover calls dropping probability and the call blocking probability in function of the access network bandwidth, number of users and the admission control strategy. In this scenario, if it is not possible to guide the handover to a different access network capable of providing the same QoS and context parameters, or in other words, if the vertical handover could not be performed, it will be guided horizontally. In this case, the user is guided to the same access technology, resulting in a vertical-to- horizontal handover. This handover management will decrease the handover dropping probability as well as the QoS degradation since the handover is "guided" to the next access network.
