The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) has emerged as next generation value added communication services including mobile multimedia broadcasting, multimedia conferencing, push to talk and presence etc on top of all IP networks. Offering multimedia streaming services across heterogeneous fixed and mobile networks have faced many challenges e.g. security, QoS, mobility and services management. In this article our objective is to identity vulnerability threats and attacks, and to study existing potential solutions for mobile multimedia broadcasting. The attacks possibilities are from multiple communication protocols suite i.e. Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is used for session management, Diameter is used for authentication and authorization, Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) & Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) are used for media streaming on top of transport and IP infrastructure, therefore facing security challenges from three protocols domains. We will also present extended security by developing Intrusion Detection and Prevention (IDP) System to secure IMS based Mobile Multimedia Broadcasting communication from Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks.

User mobility, combined with the rapidly growing number of multimedia applications, form a challenging and yet unresolved problem for the development of call admission control schemes over next generation wireless cellular networks. In this work we propose a new efficient CAC scheme for MPEG-4 videoconference traffic over cellular networks, which uses precomputed traffic scenarios for its decision-making. Our scheme is shown, via an extensive simulation study, to clearly excel in comparison with well-known existing approaches, in terms of quality of service (QoS) provisioning to users receiving videoconference traffic.

Users in ubiquitous and pervasive computing environments will be much more empowered in ways to access and to control their navigation. Handover, the vital event in which a user changes the attachment point in a next generation network (NGN), is an important occasion and the conditions and environment in which it is executed can offer relevant information for businesses. This paper describes the capabilities of a platform which intends to exploit contextual handover information offering a rich environment that can be used by access and content providers for building innovative context-aware multi-provided services. Based on ontologies, the technique not only eases the building of versatile services but also provides a comprehensive source of information both for enriching user navigation in the network as well as for the improvement of the provider's relationship with their customers.

In the context of interactive mobile TV services, and more precisely the creation and deployment of interactive mobile TV services, this paper presents the different issues existing in the choice of the rich media format permitting to render interactivity. A solution allowing an easy creation of interactive services for mobile TV will be proposed. This solution will take into account the low integration cost required by the service creator to create and deploy such services on different service platforms or technologies supported by networks and terminals.

Neighbor attachment is the process of establishing links between nodes that on the physical layer are visible to each other. Many strategies can be followed to connect to adjacent nodes. A simple scenario would be to consider all nodes within the transmission range of a node as its neighbors. In future generation communication networks more sophisticated scenarios may be followed to establish neighborhood relations with only a limited number of carefully selected nodes. Different neighbor attachment policies result into different network topologies. In any topology a packet sent from a node to one of its neighbors will experience interference, which is caused by simultaneous communications between other nodes in the network. Obviously, high levels of interference would severely disrupt communications. In this paper we examine effects of neighbor attachment policies on interference. To the best of our knowledge, this important point has not received proper attention before. Our study enables us to identify neighbor attachment directives that can reduce the amount of interference in ad-hoc and sensor network.

Software-defined radio (SDR) is an emerging technology that facilitates having multiple wireless communication protocols on one device. Previous work has shown that current W-CDMA, GPS, GSM, and WiMAX applications can run on this class of device while consuming significant processing power. next generation wireless networks require speeds in excess of 50 Mbps. Some of the fastest AES software implementations only achieve 20 Mbps single-threaded performance on our reference platform. In order to have secure software-defined radio, the security processing gap must be addressed. This paper presents instruction set architecture (ISA) extensions for the Sandblaster DSP for AES processing.

In this paper we investigate the effect of introducing TCP Westwood+ on regular TCP New Reno. By means of analytical modeling and ns-2 simulations, we demonstrate that the two protocols get different shares of the available bandwidth in the network. Our main result is that the bandwidth sharing between the two protocols depends on one crucial parameter: the ratio between the bottleneck router buffer size and the bandwidth delay product. If the ratio is smaller than one, TCP Westwood+ takes more bandwidth. On the contrary, if the ratio is greater than one, it is TCP New Reno which gets the larger part. Inspired by our results, we propose a simple modification to the window decrease algorithm in TCP Westwood+ that solves the unfairness problem for large buffer sizes. For small buffers, the unfairness problem is still open.

The tighter and tighter converging integration of fixed and mobile telecommunication networks along with the telecom-IP network convergence have opened up the enormous market potential for a rich ecosystem of next-generation (NG) converged network technologies and services. Such NG services are envisioned to have the capability of seamlessly exploiting all the population of Web applications already available in the IP network and at the same time of leveraging the legacy capabilities and functions of typically proprietary and less open telecommunication networks. To some extent, the evolution trend is similar to what is happening for pervasive and ubiquitous services in all IP-based mobile computing. Since device miniaturization and wireless communications are making more and more feasible mobility-enhanced services to exploit all potential and opportunities of mobile computing, the goal of the mobility scenarios is becoming the realization of easily and automatically integrated services, towards the ultimate objective of disappearing computing, i.e., the seamless and transparent collaboration of wireless devices to most human activities without the need of explicit user/administration intervention.

Efficiently moving sensor data from its collection to use points is both the fundamental and the most difficult challenge in wireless sensor networks, as any data movement incurs cost. In this work, we focus on routing data to multiple, possibly mobile sinks. To deal with the dynamics of the environment arising from mobility and failures, we choose a reinforcement learning approach where neighboring nodes exchange small amounts of information allowing them to learn the next, best hop to reach all sinks. Preliminary evaluation demonstrates that our technique results in low cost routes with low overhead for the learning process.

Wireless Mesh networks (WMNs) represent the next generation wireless networks. The increased capacity of WMNs means that they are now capable of providing backhaul services traditionally maintained by wired networks. The attraction of WMNs is their ease of deployment and ability to self organise, self configure, and self heal. In order to successfully achieve this objective careful consideration must be applied when constructing a WMN. In order to optimise the operation of the network, data should traverse the network by means of the most efficient route. Characterisation and path selection will be determined by the routing algorithm coupled with the link cost metrics. In this paper we experimentally investigate the overhead associated with the estimation of the link quality using the Estimated Transmission Time (ETT) metric.
