Packets in multihop wireless networks are often discarded due to missing routes, packet collision, unreachable next-hop or bit error. As a remedy to these problems, this paper presents alternative packet- forwarding mechanisms that will reduce the likelihood of discarding packets. In addition to this, a new packet-buffering solution is proposed. By combining these two methods, reduced packet loss was achieved in addition to preserved network resources. This was confirmed through simulations, where a comparison between our proposed solutions and standard forwarding showed up to 50% reduction in packet loss.

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) have been attracting growing interests for developing a new generation of large-scale embedded computing systems, with a great potential for a wide range of applications such as surveillance, environmental monitoring, emergency medical response or building automation. However, the communication paradigms in wireless sensor networks differ from the ones associated to traditional wireless networks, triggering the need for new communication protocols and architectures. The ART-WiSe (Architecture for Real-Time communications in Wireless sensor networks) framework aims at the design of a scalable multiple-tiered WSN architecture for supporting large-scale embedded computing applications with critical requirements. An overlay Wireless Local Area Network (Tier-2) serves as a backbone for a WSN (Tier 1), relying on existing standard communication protocols and commercial-off-the-shell (COTS) technologies -^sIEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee for Tier 1 and IEEE 802.11 for Tier-2. This paper outlines ongoing work on the design of the architectural requirements and features for a QoS-aware gateway between both networks.

In multi-hop sensor networks, information obtained by the monitoring nodes need to be routed to the sinks. If we assume that the transmitter power level can be adjusted to use the minimum energy required to reach the intended next hop receiver, the energy consumption rate per unit information transmission depends on the choice of the next hop node. In a power-aware routing approach, most proposed algorithms aim at minimizing the total energy consumption or maximizing network lifetime. In this paper, we propose a new routing algorithm with two goals: minimizing the total energy consumption and ensuring fairness of energy consumption between nodes. We formulate this as a nonlinear programming problem and use a sub-gradient algorithm to solve the problem. We also evaluate the proposed algorithm via simulations at the end of this paper.

Users in next generation wireless networks are expected to be highly dynamic while maintaining connectivity through different devices with different processing and communication capabilities. In wireless environments, bandwidth is scarce and channel conditions are time-varying. To guarantee quality of service (QoS) to users roaming between heterogeneous wireless networks, a dynamic QoS negotiation mechanism, which allows users to dynamically negotiate their service-levels with the network, is required. Several protocols for dynamic service level negotiation have been proposed, each focusing on a particular mode. This paper presents an overview of these protocols and discusses their limitations. To alleviate these shortcomings, a dynamic QoS negotiation scheme to allow users to change their service levels in response to changes in both network conditions and their own resource requirements is proposed. In the proposed scheme, upon an intra-domain handoff of a mobile node, the visited access point consults the previously used access point to confirm the legitimacy of the service negotiation request issued by the mobile node. The performance of the proposed scheme has been investigated and compared with other dynamic negotiation approaches. It was demonstrated that the proposed scheme outperforms the state-of-the-art method, in terms of the signaling overhead and data storage, at the expense of a slight increase in the overall negotiation delay.

Target classification is important in wireless sensor network (WSN). This paper proposes a collaborative peer-to-peer (P2P) training and classifying method with support vector machine (SVM) for WSN. The proposed method incrementally carries out the training process with the collaboration of sensor nodes in P2P paradigm. For decreasing energy consumption and improving accuracy, the collaboration of sensor nodes is implemented by autonomously selecting the proper set of sensor nodes to carry out the training process according to several feasible measures of energy consumption and information utility. Because of the purposeful sensor nodes selection, dynamic collaborative SVM can conquer the inevitable missing rate and false rate of samples in WSN. Results demonstrate that the proposed dynamic collaborative SVM can effectively implement target classification in WSN. It is also verified that the proposed dynamic collaborative SVM has outstanding performance in energy efficiency and time delay.

Most routing algorithms for sensor networks focus on finding energy efficient paths to prolong the lifetime of sensor networks. As a result, the power of sensors on efficient paths depletes quickly, and consequently sensor networks become incapable of monitoring events from some parts of their target areas. In many sensor network applications, the events that must be tracked occur at random locations and have non-deterministic generation patterns. Therefore, ideally, routing algorithms should consider not only energy efficiency, but also the amount of energy remaining in each sensor, thus avoiding non-functioning sensors due to early power depletion. This paper introduces a new metric, energy cost, devised to consider a balance of sensors' remaining energies, as well as energy efficiency. This metric gives rise to the design of the distributed energy adaptive routing (DEAR) algorithm devised to balance the data traffic of sensor networks in a decentralized manner and consequently prolong the lifetime of the networks. DEAR is scalable in the number of sensors and also robust to the variations in the dynamics of event generation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm by comparing three existing routing algorithms: direct communication approach, minimum transmission energy, and self-organized routing and find that energy balance should be considered to extend lifetime of sensor network and increase robustness of sensor network for diverse event generation patterns.

Real-time rendering water surface with photorealistic effect can improve the photorealism and immersion of the visual realization, is challenging and hot topic in computer graphic. In this paper we present a way to generate and rendering water surface in real-time based on programmable graphics hardware. The way completes the rendering process by realization of water surface modelling and reflection and refraction of water. We model the water surface based on sine wave overlapped, using tow bumping maps to achieve action effect of the water. We realize the reflection, refraction and Fresnel illumination effects with texture mapping. Experimental result shows the algorithm meets the photorealism and real-time requirement very well and can apply to the generation of photorealistic water in visual realization.

The emergence of short-range wireless communications hold the promise of realizing the grand vision of the next generation communication networks in which devices follow a always best-connected pattern for anybody, to anything from anywhere at anytime. Short-range wireless communications offers easy access to the global information and communications infrastructure, facilitates seamless connectivity amongst a host of computing, communications and sensing devices that collaborate to form a supporting ambient and pervasive computing environment. In this paper, we describe the IS-Home project where we propose a novel autonomic communications middleware platform enabling a wide variety of integrated services to be installed, including health monitoring services. The motivation for the project is to take advantage of the opportunities that open and standardized protocols and technologies can represent in the future home environment.

At first, several QoS technologies are presented and analyzed, one single technology can not solve QoS problem perfectly. A new QoS model is brought forward, which integrates MPLS traffic engineering, DiffServ and IntServ. Design philosophy and implementation technique of this model are presented. At last, simulations about this model in NS2 are done. Comparing with MPLS network, network delay is shortened and packets loss rate is improved in proposed model.
