A 10Gbps fiber optic communication link using CMOS photonics is analyzed and demonstrated to be feasible as a low cost, low power, highly integrated solution for next generation networks. The optical transceviever uses a 0.13μm SOI process to implement an integrated TX and RX module capable of driving greater than 2km of Single Mode (SM) fiber. The optical transceiver core operates at 10Gbps with a BER of less than 10exp-15 and a power consumption of 1.25W per channel.

As the interest in the deployment of Free Space Optical (FSO) links gains momentum, its becoming important to investigate the implementation of proposed higher state modulation schemes. M-ary PPM promises significant performance enhancement and this paper gives results about an experimental VHDL based FPGA implementation of a 256-ary PPM modem. The discussed chip design proves the capability of M-ary PPM as an implementable solution for future FSO systems. This preliminary design provides a suitable starting point for an integrated solution in the next generation FSO systems.

In the next generation multimedia wireless network environment that consists of heterogeneous access technologies, we need to offer the end user with multimedia QoS inside each access network as well as during vertical handoff between them. The vertical handoff algorithm have to be QoS aware, which cannot be achieved by using the traditional RSS as the vertical handoff criteria. In this paper, we propose a new vertical handoff algorithm using the receiving SINR from various access networks as the handoff criteria. By converting the different receiving SINR values, the handoff algorithm can have the knowledge of achievable bandwidths from both access networks, and make handoff decisions with multimedia QoS consideration. Analysis results confirms that the new SINR based vertical handoff algorithm is able to consistently offer the end user with maximum available bandwidth during vertical handoff comparing with the RSS based vertical handoff, whose performance differs under different network conditions.

Cooperative wireless networks will facilitate a beneficial evolution of multimedia communications, setting out from the today's multitude of communication standards and radio interfaces both in the licensed and the unlicensed domain. The deployment of cognitive wireless solutions, which will form the communication platforms, will be a key asset because we expect to see an increasingly flexible, ad-hoc utilization of the available spectrum in the unlicensed domain and a co-existence of communication standards in the licensed bands. In this communication, the authors will illustrate a platform based approach towards cognitive wireless communications. Three software defined radio concepts designed by the authors will be presented, namely the HAWK (Highly Adaptable Wireless Kit), the FALCON (Flexible Access Logic for communication networks), and the MUSTANG (MUlti-STAndard single chip transceiver for the next generation), finally, giving an outlook on their wireless optical communication device, termed ARGOS. These concepts form the basis of the authors' cognitive wireless termed PROMETHEUS.

A light-trail is a generalized lightpath that enables multiple nodes to statistically share an optical communication path (wavelength bus). A light-trail is different from a lightpath on account of its unique node architecture - that enables formation of unidirectional wavelength buses. A node in a light-trail supports signal flow characteristics of drop-and-continue as well as passive addition leading to formation of the bus. Apart from the node architecture, another differentiation between light-trails and lightpaths is in the use of out-of-band control channel (optical supervisory channel - OSC) for dynamic communication. The combined effect of a unique node architecture and out-of-band control channel enables light-trails to provide capability of sub-wavelength grooming, dynamic provisioning and optical multicasting. These features offered by light-trails are critical for next generation emerging applications such as VoIP, video-on-demand (VoD), triple-play and pseudo-wire edge-to-edge emulation (PWE3). Current OSC based control channel requires engineering enhancement to provision dynamic and bandwidth efficient services over light-trails. We investigate into the control channel hierarchies in light-trail networks to provision these emerging services. Centralized, distributed, static and dynamic control mechanisms are proposed. Light-trail control for provisioning next generation services is considered through theory and simulation.

Wireless sensor networks represent a new generation of real time traffic communications and high data rate sensor applications such as structural health monitoring and control. In this work we study some problems of data gathering in sensor networks. The information that the sensor collect about their environment must be delivered in timely fashion to collecting central processing system. We prove in this research that finding the optimal schedule in order to minimize the maximal delivery time with restrictions on the total idle time allowed in a general network topology with a single designated destination base station is NP-hard. We also refer to a special case of linear network topology for which we present several optimization algorithms: First we present an algorithm to minimize the number of tardy messages. We then present an algorithm to minimize the maximal lateness. Finally, we present an algorithm to minimize the maximal completion time. All of the scheduling optimization algorithms.

Enabling next generation network to support multimedia streaming services across heterogeneous fixed and mobile networks challenges the developers to define a unified triple play framework solution. The IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) defined by the 3rd generation partnership projects (3GPP and 3GPP2) represents today a basis framework for a service delivery platform (SDP) for providing triple play services. Several approaches have already been introduced struggling with the need for an integrated solution based on the IMS core or the development of a separated subsystem. The Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS has launched the "Open IMS Playground" in July 2004 as part of the German 3G beyond national testbed. The IMS Playground has been extended recently as an open environment gathering all major IMS core components, and triple play toolkit originating from own developments as well as major industry players, which can be used by academic and industrial partners for early prototyping of new triple play services, related components, protocols, and applications. This paper introduces the relevant technologies and provides an overview of the "open NGN/triple play toolkit and testbed @ FOKUS".

In this paper, we investigate the problem of grouping the sensor nodes into clusters to enhance the overall scalability of the network. A selected set of nodes, known as gateway nodes, will act as cluster-heads for each cluster and the objective is to balance the load among these gateways. Load balanced clustering increases system stability and improves the communication between the various nodes in the network. We call the problem addressed in this paper as the load-balanced clustering problem (LBCP). We first show that a special case of LBCP (whereby the traffic load contributed by all sensor nodes are the same) is optimally solvable in polynomial time. We next prove that the general case of LBCP is NP-hard. We then proposed an efficient 2/3-approximation algorithm for the problem.

The need for security is obviously growing very fast with the dramatic development in computer network communication. It is a fact, that sending information over any public network can be exposed to possible unauthorized access or malicious attacks. It becomes increasingly important to secure the data flow path. IPSec is a suite of protocols that adds security to communications at the IP level. Protocols within the IPSec suite make extensive use of cryptographic algorithms. Since these algorithms are computationally sophisticated, some hardware accelerators are needed to support high throughput. In this paper we propose an IPsec-based secure call admission control (SCAC) with multiple cryptographic accelerators. Our proposed IPsec-based Multifence Secure Call Admission Control in heterogeneous networks enhanced with Malicious Packets Filter (MPF), is a set of technologies and solutions. It enforces security policy and bandwidth compliance on all devices seeking to access network computing resources, in order to limit damage from emerging security threats and to allow network access only to compliant and trusted endpoint devices. This SCAC also provides support for quality of service. High-level simulations and the related results are provided to show the effectiveness of the SCAC.

Random access strategies have been applied to various wireless systems for a long time. Recently, the fast retrial algorithm has been proposed to improve the performance of random access in orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) system. This paper studies the performance of the OFDMA system with the fast retrial algorithm when the number of subchannels can be adjustable depending on traffics, and also the relationship between the number of subchannels and throughput of each subchannel.
