Technological innovations and market demands are radically changing the structure of the ICT industry. The convergence of devices, services and networks is resulting in the convergence of the industries. This paper describes the impact of technological innovations on the structure of ICT industry and discusses new trends and strategies for operators to face the challenges of the converged world by examining the layer model of the ICT industry. The IP-based new generation networks (NGN), wireless technologies, and broadband access is rapidly becoming the choices for the operators and making it possible for them to enter the other domains. The incumbent operators and other big giants are adopting the strategy of vertical integration while new entrants are mainly focusing on some particular segments of the industry. The future horizontal networks are demanding re-evaluation of strategies and business models from the operators.

The evolution to IP-based next-generation networks, the widely adoption of IMS by both fixed and mobile service providers and the need to better integrate enterprise solutions with telecom services are expected to drive a new wave of enhanced services that will seamlessly combine IT and telecom technologies. Telecom service providers have great expectations from these new networks, helping them to reduce their costs, to extend their reach (with the ability to offer services across multiple access networks to a wide range of personal devices) and to respond more quickly to ever-changing requirements from consumers and enterprise customers. Indeed, these customers are expecting more and more blended lifestyle services including multimedia and interactive services. But, even if network technologies are evolving, the biggest barrier to increased service adoption is still that the user experience does not meet consumer expectations. Then, this paper describes work being undertaken within HP OpenCall Software group and explores strong new user experiences and business models and their associated benefits, technical challenges and implementation choices. This work is based on our experience from using standard IT services in collaboration with the IMS technology in different areas to implement the instant group communication class of applications. As part of this work, three different areas have been analyzed and compared.

Wireless sensor networks are widely used in many applications like security, healthcare and defense. They have lot of design constraints in terms of power consumption, processing power etc. They have lot of applications in environmental engineering also. This paper discusses in detail about hardware, firmware and application interface design for a wireless node and base station for one such environmental application, to characterize photovoltaic panels in harsh environmental conditions. Later part of the paper discusses about the implementation of the wireless sensor node for measuring the surface temperature of the PV panel, the results of the experiment, future work and conclusion.

Nowadays, many IP backbone networks adopt separate control and forwarding planes for unicast and multicast traffic flows. Indeed, while MPLS (multiprotocol label switching) is widely deployed for unicast traffic, IP multicast is the only available solution for the delivery of "one-to-many" traffic flows. With P2MP LSPs (Point-to-Multipoint Label Switched Paths) support, a unified control and forwading plane may be devised. Such a reduction in the number of protocols used in the core of the network as well as in the number of encapsulations in the data plane, results in simplified network operations. The paper discusses the design and the development of the control and data planes extensions needed to provide P2MP LSP support in an MPLS network. In particular, such signalling and forwarding mechanisms have been implemented in a network testbed based on open-source routers. Finally, tests have been performed to assess the new mechanisms from both an operational and performance point-of-view.

We propose a novel measure method of information utility for tracking and localization in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The target moving arbitrarily in WSNs is modeled by Markov chains using a transition matrix. The proposed information utility measurement allows us to expect the next state of the target and identify the informative sensors. Further, compared with existing localization methods, the proposed power-aware sensor selection considers the energy constraint of WSNs. To conserve energy, subsets of sensor nodes are activated based on a combinative measurement including information utility, communication cost, and residual energy. We have implemented the proposed localization system on real motes and experimented in an obstacle-free environment. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms two popular baseline schemes, k-nearest-neighbor and stochastic schemes, at extending the network lifetime. In addition, it balances the energy level of sensors in the network so that energy consumption is spread uniformly over all the sensors.

For a TCP/IP based next generation wireless networks, a conventional layered design is not optimum because it is not considering mobile propagation characteristics. Cross-layer design is the one of the most efficient alternate network architectures. In order to improve the throughput, hybrid SMD (symbol mapping diversity) technique has been proposed. Hybrid SMD technique is based on cross-layer design over wired communication channel. It is necessary to have a suitable method over wireless communication channel. We propose a novel SMD method for this purpose.

In next-generation (NG) wireless networks, hybrid handover techniques are expected to enable the integration of heterogeneous networks, e.g. 3G cellular networks and 802.11 wireless LAN (WLAN). Media independent handover (MIH) has begun to be discussed in the latest IEEE 802.21 to accommodate multiple disparate interfaces in mobile handset. Multiple interfaces can come in a variety of ways to facilitate hybrid handover, and may result in different requirements on protocols and performance. In this paper, we classify multi-interface schemes for handover in heterogeneous wireless networks. We propose a multi-interface scheme for IEEE 802.21 MIH. The scheme is proposed to be able to work with standard TCP and Mobile IPv4 agent routers without particular configuration. Based on this scheme, we implemented a dual-interface Mobile Host (MH) model in Network Simulation 2 (ns2) to evaluate how it performs in comparison with single-interface MH.

The development of specifications for next generation networks has introduced a new network paradigm that has features and capabilities to ensure the provisioning of new value-added multimedia services over the broadband access technologies that are currently being deployed in the market. In this respect, the TISPAN group from ETSI is working in the specification of a next generation network, mainly based on IMS as the service signalling architecture. Nevertheless, the first release of the TISPAN NGN does not consider the QoS provisioning mechanisms in the end user environment. QoS support will necessarily require to extend the QoS scope to the client premises, in order to provide a real end-to-end QoS. In this scenario, the figure of a residential gateway in the user network plays a crucial role. In this paper, an architecture is presented to allow the automatic configuration of the QoS parameters in a residential gateway directly connected to a TISPAN compliant next generation network. This architecture should support the processing of the SIP signalling flows exchanged between the end user environment and the Core IMS in the NGN, deriving relevant information from the SDP payloads and accordingly configuring the QoS parameters in the user network environment

One of the prominent goals of next-generation mobile communication systems is to support seamless roaming of users across heterogeneous wireless access networks. Although SIP has been regarded as an attractive candidate to provide mobility management in B3G/4G networks because of its flexibility and ease of deployment, it still suffers from unacceptably long handoff delays. In this paper, a SIP-based seamless-handoff (S-SIP) scheme is proposed to overcome this problem in inter-domain roaming. Unlike the other SIP-based handoff methods, S-SIP employs a "make-before-break" procedure for seamless handoffs. Moreover, we also propose the appropriate handoff triggering point for this scheme based on location tracking techniques. Simulations results show that the proposed scheme greatly outperform the general SIP-based handoff scheme.

Motivated by realistic sensor network scenarios that have fading environment and opportunistic transmission, we propose a novel routing protocol, OMR, which integrates routing and MAC protocols to improve the packet delivery ratio, reduce the packet delivery latency, and decrease the energy consumption in multi-hop wireless sensor networks. OMR chooses a packet's route at each hop after the transmission to that hop and the choice is based on the fact that intermediate nodes actually receive the packet and can forward the packet to any nodes at the next hop with high probability. The nodes coordinate to guarantee hop-based reliability while avoiding redundant retransmission by blindly flooding. The timeout and sink initiated retransmission mechanisms by intermediate nodes in OMR guarantee the end-to-end reliability. Piggyback acknowledgement shares the packet and acknowledgement information among neighbors to mitigate the effects of lossy and asymmetric links. The results of intensive simulation using TOSSIM show that OMR performs well compared with traditional routing protocols.
