Ultra wideband (UWB) technology is one of the promising solutions for future short-range communication which has recently received a great attention by many researchers. So far, two standards have been proposed to the IEEE 802.15.3a task group (TG3a) as a high-speed physical technology for next-generation wireless personal area networks (WPAN). These technologies are multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) UWB and direct-sequence (DS) UWB; two incompatible standards which, due to the withdrawal of the standardization process, will have to coexist in the near future. In this paper, we present a performance analysis of MB-OFDM UWB communication in the presence of binary phase shift keying time-hopping (BPSK-TH) UWB and BPSK-DS UWB interfering transmissions. In the bit error rate (BER) analysis, it is considered that there are multiple UWB interferers affecting the MB-OFDM signal. A Gaussian approximation is considered for the multiple UWB interferers under consideration, and the BER performance is evaluated for a multiband OFDM UWB system and the WLAN 802.11a singleband OFDM-based standard. Numerical results and comparisons are provided for different OFDM and UWB coexisting systems.

Utilising wireless systems within a new environment such as the one proposed in this paper Intelligent Retail Business (IRB) comprises of a number of technical and processual issues. Online and offline integration is regarded as the most innovative way forward for hybrid marketing and consumer purchasing. The technologies involved in this paper look at the application of Location Based Services. In addition context is the development of a Use Case for the IRB scenario. Using a Wireless sensor Network (WSN) provides the next step in the evolution of consumer purchasing and retail strategy which can benefit both parties through mutual needs. Ultimately, a new shopping experience is unfolding and improved technologies that support this innovative approach.

The second generation of advanced telecom computing architecture (ATCA) based on PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group (PICMG) specification has evolved to a live deployment phase. Products from world renowned telecom vendors in the wireless (CDMA, GSM, and UMTS), IMS, circuit core and packet core to build scalable carrier grade IP and converged networks are being deployed. These networks provide IP telecommunication, IP multimedia communication, scalable web collaboration, unified communication as well as triple and quadruple play services. This paper analyzes the emergence of ATCA compliant hardware and software platform from a global leader in telecommunication. The paper discusses the ease of building applications using the high speed interconnect technology, redundancy capability, multi-switching fabric usage, high availability carrier grade middleware and simplified network management for next generation networks. The CAPEX and OPEX benefits to service providers of using ATCA are discussed.

In this paper, we propose a low-complexity scheme for minimizing energy consumption in a clustered multirate CDMA sensor network with multiple receive antennas by jointly controlling the powers and rates of all transmitting sensor nodes. The non-convex bit-energy optimization model is formulated by the sum product of transmit-plus-hardware powers and processing gains. The reason of taking the hardware consumed power into account is because the consumed energy in hardware is significant in a dense sensor network. We first optimized transmit powers by fixing the processing gains. As a consequence, we acquired the optimal transmit power expressed as a function of the processing gains. next we reformulated a new simplified optimization problem with convexity. Then we can derive two low-complexity and closed-form algorithms for the transmit power and rate, respectively. A numerical example verifies our proposed algorithms have a nice performance in saving energy.

This is the fourth year of this Minitrack which resulted from the combination of the Asynchronous Learning networks, next generation of Learning Platforms, and Technology Supported Learning Minitracks. The papers this year are organized into three presentation sessions, each focusing on a different aspect of technologies for teaching and learning.

In this paper supporting tools of a new mark-up language developed for service creation in next generation networks are presented. The language supports open interfaces of Parlay/Open service access and its grammar is formally described in augmented Backus Naur form (ABNF). In order to allow language extensibility without the need of manual reprogramming its interpreter, a translator-generator is developed. The translator-generator automatically generates parts of the language interpreter.

In this paper, we develop and analyze a new self-healing key distribution scheme with revocation capability, scalable to very large groups in unreliable ad hoc wireless environment. The main emphasis of our proposed scheme is that it has significant improvement in terms of both storage and communication overhead compared to the previous works. The storage overhead of our self-healing key distribution with t revocation capability is O((t + 1) log q), and the communication complexity is O((t+1+j) log q), where q is a large prime and j is the current session number. In contrast to the previous schemes, we use a different and more efficient self-healing technique. On a more positive note, our scheme enables reuse of personal key of a user to next m sessions and consequently, overcomes the restriction of m sessions in setup phase, unlike previous works. Moreover, we analyze our scheme in an appropriate security framework and proved that it is unconditionally secure and achieves both forward secrecy and backward secrecy.

A low temperature thermal energy harvesting system to supply power to wireless sensing modules is introduced. The thermoelectric generator module (TEG) makes use of the temperature gradient between the human body (the heat source) and the ambient to deliver a low voltage output that is up-converted by means of a power management circuit. This regulated power source is able to reliably supply a wireless communication module that transmits the collected temperature, current and voltage measurements.
