Mobile network operators aims are offering new services to be competitive in the telecommunications market. However, the migration cost towards the third generation (3G) network is so high. This paper presents a proposal to offer a next generation services platform based on session initiation protocol (SIP). This solution is easy to implement and its cost is relatively low. Our solution takes into account the IP multimedia subssytem (IMS) service architecture specification proposed by the third generation partnership project (3GPP) providing ubiquitous characteristics for mobile users. In this way, our proposal becomes as a tool to allow an easy transition from 2.5 to 3 rd generation networks.

Cooperation in wireless networks will facilitate a new dimension in the evolution of multimedia communications, sCtting out from the today's situation with a multitude of communication standards and radio interfaces both in the licensed and thC unlicensed domain. In order to pave the way towards cooperative networks, the deployment of cognitive wireless solutions, which will form the communication platforms, will be a key asset. In the future, we expect to see an increasingly flexible, ad-hoc utilization of the available spectrum in the unlicensed domain and a co-existence of communication standards in the licensed bands. In this communication, the authors will illustrate a platform based approach towards cognitive wireless communications. Also, the authors will present three software defined radio concepts designed by the members of the Lehrstuhl für KommunikationsTechnik, namely the HAWK (Highly Adaptable Wireless Kit), the FALCON (Flxible Access Logic for communication networks), and the MUSTANG (MUlti-STAndard single chip transceiver for the next generation), finally, giving an outlook on their wireless optical communication device, termed ARGOS. HAWK, FALCON, MUSTANG and ARGOS form the basis of the cognitive wireless platform, developed by the authors, termed PROMETHEUS. The setup of PROMETHEUS and its functionality shall be illustrated together with selected measurement results.

Distributed network-control-systems (D-NCS) are a multidisciplinary effort whose aim is to produce a network structure and components that are capable of integrating sensors, actuators, communication, and control algorithms in a manner to suit real-time applications. They have been gaining popularity due to their high potential in widespread applications and becoming more realizable due to the rapid advancements in wireless communication and data transfer technologies. This paper addresses the issue of D-NCS information security as well its real-time performance with respect to network security protocols and encryption schemes. We use a wireless network based, robot navigation path tracking system called intelligent space (iSpace) as a D-NCS test bed in this paper. The paper classifies the data from every NCS module (sensors, actuators and controllers) according to bandwidth requirement, time and information sensitivity. We define performance parameters for this NCS test bed. Various system factors affecting these performance parameters are recognized. Network security algorithms DES and 3DES are integrated with the application to encrypt the sensitive information flow. These wireless security features are considered as an added factor to the NCS. Standard statistical approach (2 k factorial experiment design) is used to study and estimate the effect of each factor on the system performance especially security additions. Thorough experimental results, tables of detailed characterization and effect estimate analysis is presented followed by the discussion on the performance comparison of NCS with and without wireless security.

The transmission of high quality video requires high bandwidth. Ensuring constantly high bandwidth in wireless environments is a challenging task given constraints in the current wireless network resources. Current mobile computers are equipped with multiples wireless interfaces that can be used to improve the video quality by aggregating the bandwidth of these interfaces. Such Bandwidth Aggregation (BAG) approach involves multiple paths in communication and gives rise to a number of issues related to the management of the Service Level Agreement (SLA) and packet reordering. To guarantee an efficient and fair management of SLA, this paper presents a bandwidth aggregation-aware QoS negotiation mechanism that enables users to dynamically negotiate their desired service levels and to reach them through the use of bandwidth aggregation. This operation is performed while ensuring a fair use of the network resources among all competing users. To cope with packet reordering, a new scheduling strategy is presented. The performance evaluation of the proposed bandwidth aggregation-aware QoS negotiation scheme and the proposed scheduling algorithm are conducted via simulations and the results are discussed.

Providing efficient and reliable communication in wireless sensor networks is a challenging problem. To recover from corrupted packets, previous approaches have tried to use retransmissions and FEC mechanisms. The energy efficiency of these mechanisms, however, is very sensitive to unreliable links. In this paper, we present cluster-based forwarding, where each node forms a cluster such that any node in the next-hop's cluster can take forwarding responsibility. This architecture, designed specifically for wireless sensor networks, achieves better energy-efficiency by reducing retransmissions. Cluster-based forwarding is not a routing protocol. Rather, it is designed as an extension layer that can augment existing routing protocols. Using simulations, we demonstrate that cluster-based forwarding is effective in improving both end-to-end energy efficiency and latency of current routing protocols.

Due to its scalability and simplicity, geographic routing 1 has gained much research attention as a basic routing primitive in wireless sensor networks (WSN). However in geographic routing, due to ad hoc or random deployments and network dynamics of WSN, communication holes may exist in a network area, where no next hop candidate is closer to the destination than the node currently holding the packet. Recovery strategies are applied to help packets move out of the void areas provided a path does exist between source and destination nodes. Current void recovery schemes include increasing the transmission power, employing right/left handle rule or distance update etc. In this paper, we propose a contention-based geographic routing (CGR) protocol using a novel on-line "void" avoidance technique. We combine forwarding area determination, void handling, and load balancing in a single back-off function that is used as a cost metric to effectively locate the next hop node. Packets can be delivered to the destination along paths that are near optimal from depth first search (DFS) perspective. We term the new protocol as CGR-D, in which "D" represents DFS. Simulation results show that the new routing protocol outperforms existing algorithms in terms of total packets delivered, lifetime, and path length when voids exist in the network.

The increasing progress in wireless mobile communication has attracted an important amount of attention on the security issue. To provide secure communication for mobile devices, authenticated key agreement protocol is an important primitive for establishing session key. So far, several protocols have been proposed to provide robust mutual authentication and key establishment for wireless local area network (WLAN). In this paper we present a fast and secure authenticated key agreement (EC-SAKA) protocol based on elliptic curve cryptography. Our proposed protocol provides secure mutual authentication, key establishment and key confirmation over an untrusted network. The new protocol achieves many of the required security and performance properties. It can resist dictionary attacks mounted by either passive or active networks intruders. It can resist Man-In-The Middle attack. It also offers perfect forward secrecy which protects past sessions and passwords against future compromise. In addition, it can resist known- key and resilience to server attack. Our proposed protocol uses ElGamal signature techniques (ECEGS). We show that our protocol meets the above security attributes under the assumption that the elliptic curve discrete logarithm problem is secure. Our proposed protocol offers significantly improved performance in computational and communication load over comparably many authenticated key agreement protocols such as B-SPEKE, SRP, AMP, PAK-RY, PAK-X, SKA, LR-AKE and EC-SRP.

In this paper, we address the problem of lifetime optimization under coverage and connectivity requirements for sensor networks where different targets need to be monitored by different types of sensors running at possibly different sampling rates as well as different initial energy reserve. The problem is particularly challenging since we need to consider both connectivity requirement and so-called target Q-coverage requirement, i.e., different targets may require different sensing quality in terms of the number of transducers, sampling rate, etc. First we formulate this NP-complete lifetime optimization problem, which is general and allows unprecedented diversity in coverage requirements, communication ranges, and sensing ranges. Our approach is based on column generation, where a column corresponds to a feasible solution; our idea is to find a column with steepest ascent in lifetime, based on which we iteratively search for the maximum lifetime solution. To speed up the convergence rate, we generate an initial solution through a novel random selection algorithm. Through extensive simulations, we systematically study the effect of target priorities, communication ranges, and sensing ranges on the lifetime.

Code division multiple access (CDMA) technique can be applied in wireless sensor networks where the number of nodes can be extremely high. This paper presents a chaos-based CDMA transceiver prototype design based on the FPGA technology. The prototype was developed on Cyclone EP1C20F400C7 development board. Covering brief background theory of the chaotic communication systems, the paper evaluates logistic, cubic, sinusoidal, and piecewise chaotic maps for the multi-user system applications. The transmitter and correlation demodulator prototype were modeled in Verilog HDL. The logistic and piecewise chaotic sequence generators were successfully implemented on the FPGA For measuring system performance, a high speed white Gaussian noise generator was designed using Quantized Box-Muller method and probability of error characteristics were investigated for piecewise and logistic mapping. The curves obtained on the prototype are compared with the theoretically expected performances.
