In recent years the volume of spam in the Internet has far surpassed legitimate email. Marketers, fraudsters and political parties enjoy positive returns due to the large number of messages that can be transmitted at very low costs. Unfortunately there is an emerging trend that spam is now also being transmitted via instant messaging and voice calls. This is a concern for future next-generation networks, such as the IP Multimedia Subsystem, because insufficient security and privacy will hinder the take-up of these services. In this paper a multilayered architecture is presented that prevents automated spamming. This is achieved using a combination of legislation, blacklists, white-lists, call-pattern analysis and Turing tests. The proposed solution is applied to a practical testbed and evaluations demonstrate the effectiveness of this proposal.

In today's world of pervasive computing, the mobile devices are enriched with a variety of features and being used as a personal information delivery platform. The increased processing, storage and communication capabilities of these devices combined with the latest developments in the area of service oriented architecture enables a new class of services, called nomadic mobile services (NMS). Recent research has resulted in different NMS provisioning approaches; each one employs/defines a different architecture and addresses a different mix of issues. This paper provides a comparative study of three NMS provisioning approaches based on their architectural design, development choices and prototyped applications. Each approach has its own merits considering the applications they aim at. However, in the future, a solution which uses Web services for better interoperability and employs proxy approach for better QoS could be a possible technical design.

next generation networks (NGN) introduces a great emphasis on creating innovative telecommunications services that are rapidly deployed and tied to users need. Telecom operators and Service Providers are therefore facing important challenges to manage the overloaded data of the user preferences, the customized services and the whole service delivery chain. This is mainly due to the lack of standardization and common vocabulary, which strongly hinder information exchange and communication between information systems. Ontologies, which capture the semantics of information from various sources and giving them a concise, uniform and declarative description, have gained significant interests in research activities and industry. This paper is an analysis of ontologies usefulness to answer the NGN management challenges. Hence how ontologies may be used to improve Telecom Operators information systems in the NGN context.

He attended graduate school at U.B.C. on a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Postgraduate Scholarship and obtained the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering in 1981.

This paper discusses symbiosis between humans and networked communication robots from the viewpoint of communication media. The “network robot system” integrating ubiquitous networking and robot technologies, is introduced in order to improve performance for sensing and human robot interaction and create brand new markets in the robot services. The communication robots in the system have come into greater use by being networked with humans, mobile phones and ubiquitous sensors (cameras, tags, wearable computers, etc.). This paper also introduces several field experiments with the system at elementary schools, at a science museum, at a train station. The results of field experiments indicate the potential of networked communication robots as next-generation communication media.

Common Data Link (CDL) is the US Department of Defense's standard RF communication system for airborne intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) systems. It has evolved over the past 30+ years to include a large family of data rates and waveform variants and is used in a number of applications. Two important capabilities are attracting increasing attention in recent years: networking and spectral efficiency. The current point-to-point, full-duplex architecture does not allow a moderate number of terminal modes to form an ad-hoc mesh network. Moreover, if the number of nodes within a network exceeds a small threshold, the available CDL spectrum can be easily exceeded. If not resolved, these issues will significantly limit future CDL applications and deployment. This paper discusses the history of the networking and spectrum aspects of CDL. It explains why the existing CDL architecture, if unmodified, is not suitable for the next generation ad-hoc mesh networking. It proposes a new, spectrally efficient, half-duplex CDL (HD-CDL) waveform as the candidate for the next generation wideband mesh networking data link waveform, and explains how the proposed HD-CDL extension enables CDL mesh networking. It also discusses challenges that a system integrator may face in transitioning from the current point-to-point full-duplex implementation to the proposed HD-CDL. The focus of the discussion is the physical layer specification, but other network layers and functions will also be briefly discussed.

Directional forwarding is forwarding to the next nodes that have the optimal progress towards destination while geocast forwarding is forwarding of packets to nodes within a certain geographic area. This paper proposes new type of communication in wireless sensor network (WSN) called geodirectional-cast forwarding based on quadrant. Geodirectional-cast forwarding combines geocast with directional forwarding to forward the data packet through multiple paths within a certain geographic area to destination. Forwarding based on quadrant means neighboring nodes that are in the same quadrant will only participate in this routing phase. This paper presents the simulation results of three types of forwarding which are unicast, geocast and geodirectional-cast. The finding shows geodirectional-cast improves throughput and consumes acceptable power compared to unicast and geocast forwarding.

The support for quality of service has become an absolute must in present data communication networks, as they must now adapt in order to transport time-critical applications, such as voice and video. Great efforts have been made to make the best-effort IP infrastructure suitable for these next-generation applications. QoS frameworks such as IntServ and DiffServ are helping the goal of deploying virtually any communication over IP networks, with a preference of service providers to use DiffServ, due to a number of technological and operational reasons. However, DiffServ lacks complete formal specification-which negatively impacts performance and consistency across implementations-and many of the current partial DiffServ models are flawed by their lack of taking into account variabilities in packet sizes. As previous research has shown, this omission all but renders the models unusable in a number of scenarios. This paper proposes a measurement-based method to include such variabilities in mathematical models. The rationale for using a measurement-based approach versus an analytical one, as well as results and validation of this approach, are also discussed.

In this paper we explore next generation network (NGN) VoIP service quality measurements from end-points as a basis for measuring NGN network quality. Thousand or even millions of end point sensors could be envisaged within an NGN, where each end point could collect data through the RTCP eXtended Record (XR) and using network based data aggregation, sorting and analysis the quality of an NGN could be measured and form part of an NGN control plane. A simulation study provides a basis for determining some of the data that could be gathered within an NGN and analysed within a measurement and control system. An NGN is simulated using layer 3 and layer 2 resiliency techniques with a VOIP mesh overlay acting as a measurement instrument across the network. The data from the simulated measurement grid can be used in conjunction with tomography techniques to detect issues within the NGN and potentially optimise network performance. It is postulated that such a system may include a mesh of active long term sensors as well as consumer end systems and its core may be effectively realized using a Grid computing based analysis engine which is briefly outlined.

Scalability is one of the key issues of the researches on next-generation Packet Switching Fabrics (PSF). The torus network becomes a promising technology for next-generation PSF, since it has good scalability as well as high capacity and reliability. In this paper, the principles on how to determine the values of critical design parameters for constructing PSF of Torus topology (PSF-T) are discussed. Then a modular switching subnetwork that employs the torus network technology, Configurable Board (CB), is proposed. A scheme to construct scalable PSF-T with CB modules is also given. The number of ports and the capacity of the PSF can grow smoothly up to hundreds of times, and its performance does not degrade during scaling. Simulation results are presented to show the validity of our scheme.
