The throughput of delay sensitive traffic in a Rayleigh fading network is studied by adopting a scaling limit approach. The case of study is that of a pair of nodes establishing a data stream that has routing priority over all the remaining traffic in the network. For every delay constraint, upper and lower bounds on the achievable information rate between the two end-points of the stream are obtained as the network size grows. The analysis concerns decentralized schemes, in the sense that all nodes make next-hop decisions based only on local information, namely their channel strength to other nodes in the network and the position of the destination node. This is particularly important in a fading scenario, where the channel strength varies with time and hence pre-computing routes can be of little help. Natural applications are remote surveillance using sensor networks, and communication in emergency scenarios.

Cooperation in wireless networks will facilitate a new dimension in the evolution of multimedia communications, setting out from the today's situation with a multitude of communication standards and radio interfaces both in the licensed and the unlicensed domain. In order to pave the way towards cooperative networks, the deployment of cognitive wireless solutions, which will form the communication platforms, will be a key asset. In the future, we expect to see an increasingly flexible, ad-hoc utilization of the available spectrum in the unlicensed domain and a co-exsitence of communication standards in the licensed bands. In this communication, the authors will illustrate a platform based approach towards cognitive wireless communications. Also, the authors will present three software defined radio concepts designed by the members of the Lehrstuhl fr Kommunikations-Technik, namely the HAWK (Highly Adaptable Wireless Kit), the FALCON (Flexible Access Logic for communication networks), and the MUSTANG (MUlti-STAndard single chip transceiver for the next generation), finally, giving an outlook on their wireless optical communication device, termed ARGOS. HAWK, FALCON, MUSTANG and ARGOS form the basis of the Lehrstuhl fr KommunikationsTechnik's cognitive wireless platform, termed PROMETHEUS. The setup of PROMETHEUS and its functionality shall be illustrated together with selected measurement results.

A resource-efficient key management protocol is essential for security-sensitive applications in wireless sensor networks (WSN). Moreover, the dynamic pair-wise key and group key management protocols are also important for long-lived and mobile WSN. In this paper, a two-layered dynamic key management (TDKM) approach for cluster-based WSN (CWSN) is proposed. Both pair-wise key and group key are distributed in three rounds for key material exchange without encryption/decryption and exponentiation operations in TDKM. In theoretical analysis, TDKM is compared with other key management protocols to show its efficiency. Finally, the relationships between the number of groups and the system performance including key generation overhead, network security, and secured data transmission overhead in CWSN are analyzed.

Layered architectures are not sufficiently flexible to cope with the dynamics of wireless-dominated next generation communications. Cross-layer approaches may provide a better solution: allowing interactions between two or more non-adjacent layers in the protocol stack. Cross-layer architectures based on purely local information will not be able to support system-wide cross-layer performance optimization, context-awareness, etc. A new cross-layer architecture which provides a hybrid local and global view, using gossiping to maintain consistency has been proposed in [1]. This paper studies the possibilities of context-awareness in communications through this architecture by two examples. The first example uses user-centric context to control the available link-bandwidth and satisfy user accordingly. The second uses contextual information to control the transmission power of a mobile node.

In this paper we present the implementation of a bandwidth broker architecture for the centralized management of the QoS in native IPv6 DiffServ networks in a multi-domain environment. The bandwidth broker has been programmed in JAVA and uses COPS-PR as an infra-domain communication protocol and SIBBSv6 as an inter-domain communication protocol. The latter protocol is also presented. SIBBSv6 is a variation of the SIBBS inter-domain communication protocol with some new features such as the IPv6 support. The evaluation of the proposed architecture has been tested by implementing a real IPv6 DiffServ testbed composed of three domains. Each of these domains is managed by the developed bandwidth broker named BBv6. The results of these tests and the corresponding conclusions are also presented.

This paper proposes a bandwidth allocation mechanism called rate and queue controlled dynamic probabilistic priority (RQ-DPP) based on ForCES transport mapping layer (ForCES TML). We apply this method to counter denial-of-service (DoS) attacks for ForCES router from redirect messages. The algorithm adjusts bandwidths between different messages based on message's kind, per-flow estimated arrival rate and buffer occupancy. By comparing with DRR, the simulation results show the effectiveness of the new bandwidth allocation mechanism.

Current IP has multiple semantics including device identifier, location identifier and forwarding identifier for routing. So if locations changed in IP, the identifier is also being changed in multihomed environment and the transport session could not be maintained. In order to solve the problems, this paper suggests a mechanism that split IP into ID and locator in transport stratum in NGN.

We propose a data gathering scheme for a wireless sensor network constructed in a building in this paper. Our system consists of gateway nodes that have a power supply and wired connection to a monitoring PC, and sensor nodes that operate on a battery. sensor information is periodically gathered from all sensor nodes via gateway nodes to a monitoring PC. To conserve energy, the emission of sensor information is synchronized. A node only needs to turn on its radio transceiver before it emits its own data, to receive sensor information from distant nodes. To have a possible best path to a gateway node, a sensor node in our scheme chooses the next-hop node from gateway nodes and sensor nodes, depending on the stability of radio communications. We confirmed that stable data gathering with a gathering rate of more than 80% could be accomplished in a sensor network in unstable environments.

To overcome the low effective throughput of the popular IEEE 802.11 WLANs, a high performance WLAN standard is being developed. This new standard not only increases the raw PHY data rate but also increases the effective throughput with different MAC layer enhancements, such as frame aggregation. For small size multimedia data packet frame aggregation can improve the quality of service (QoS) of the applications. However, the wireless channel is often time varying and location dependent. Therefore aggregation of frames increases the probability of error, since the size of the frame is increased. With erroneous wireless channel an optimum value of aggregation size can greatly improve the performance of the multimedia applications. In this paper we propose a mechanism to dynamically select the aggregation size based on the channel condition prediction which reduces the number frames dropped due to wireless error. Also within a certain delay bound a link level retransmission mechanism can be used to improve the quality of the multimedia applications.

To meet the demand for broadband wireless communication, wireless systems should work well in typical wireless environments, characterized by the path loss of the signals, multipath fading, interference to adjacent channels, and random errors. IEEE 802.11 VVLANs use the unlicensed 2.4 GHz industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) band, which is vulnerable to noise generated by TVs, microwaves, and cordless phones. This paper proposes an algorithm to enhance system goodput through the dynamic optimal fragmentation. The number of contending stations, packet collisions, packet error probabilities, and fragmentation overheads are modeled in the analysis. Using an adaptive SNR estimator, the sender estimates the SNR of the receiver, and chooses a fragmentation threshold to shape arbitrary sized packets into optimal length packets. Through the rigorous analysis and extensive experiments with implemented test-bed, we show that the dynamic optimal fragmentation enhances the goodput approximately 18% in a typical WLAN environment. The experiment results reinforce that the algorithm is a comprehensive analytical model applicable to any CSMA/CA based MAC protocol for next generation wireless networks, and a realistic approach that can be deployed without changing the IEEE802.11 MAC protocol.
