Ad hoc, actuator and sensor wireless networks normally have critical connectivity properties before becoming fault intolerant. Existing algorithms for testing k-connectivity are centralized. In this article, we introduce localized algorithms for testing A-connectivity. In localized protocols, each node makes its own decision based on the information available in its local neighborhood. In the first proposed local neighbor detection (LND) algorithm, each node verifies whether or not itself and each of its p-hop neighbors have at least k neighbors. In the second local critical node detection (LCND) protocol, it also tests if the subgraph of its p-hop neighbours of a given node is k-connected. The third local subgraph connectivity detection (LSCD) protocol is based on communications between neighboring nodes to exchange the local decisions starting from k=l. All nodes declare themselves locally 1-connected. For k=2,3,..., iteratively, local decisions are propagated to p-hop neighbors. If node A is (k-1,)-connected, all its p-hop neighbors are (k-1)-connected, and the graph consisting of p-hop neighbors of A (excluding A) is (k-1,)-connected, then node A declares its neighborhood as k-connected. The experiments are carried with two ways of uniform generation of connected unit disk graphs. They show low percentage of false 'alarms', ability to locate critical areas in k-disconnected networks, and increased accuracy with increased local knowledge.

next generation mobile networks are expected to provide seamless personal mobile communication and quality of service (QoS). Lossless handoff is a key issue for providing the QoS. This paper presents a two-layer downlink queuing model and proposes a scheduling mechanism for providing lossless handoff and QoS in mobile networks, which exploit IP as a transport technology for transferring datagram between base stations and the high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) at the radio layer. In order to reduce handoff packet dropping rate at the radio layer and packet forwarding rate at the IP layer and to provide high system performance, new scheduling algorithms are performed at both IP and radio layer, which exploit handoff priority scheduling principles and take into account buffer occupancy and channel conditions. Performance results obtained by computer simulation show that, by exploiting the downlink queuing model and scheduling algorithms, the system is able to provide low handoff packet dropping rate, low packet forwarding rate, and high downlink throughput.

Telecommunications research can no longer be considered to be pure communications engineering. The convergence of fixed-line and mobile telephony with the Internet together with the rise of novel technologies for rapid service creation has made economic efficiency and user acceptance/usability to crucial factors for the success of the telecommunication business as such. In the emerging new paradigm, a holistic view onto the entire value chain from basic architectural concepts over the efficient design and implementation of new services and applications up to the end customer is becoming indispensable. Within this broad interdisciplinary field, the present paper focuses on the evolution of corresponding concepts for service quality. Whereas the traditional notion of 'QoS' (Quality-of-Service) is already well-established and has led to a plethora of research work mainly in the area of network architectures and protocols, the quality of service design ('QoD') has by far not received comparable attention in the research community. Nevertheless, we argue that both concepts are equally important for achieving a sufficient quality of user experience ('QoE') which eventually leads to both economic viability and user satisfaction. To illustrate our claim, we discuss recent developments in the area of QoS-enabled next generation network architectures as well as novel user-centric service design paradigms, examples for the resulting QoE evaluations and a novel HCI lab approach which allows flexible user tests of mobile applications "in the wild".

next to the binary-based H.323 signaling protocol for Internet telephony service developed by the Telecommunication World (ITU-T), a more lightweight text-based protocol was deemed necessary to address the specific needs of the Internet World. The session initiation protocol (SIP) was introduced in the IETF and has meanwhile gained maturity and support. The SIP-based Internet telephony service guarantees the user mobility. If SIP user is the place where the Internet connection is possible, it anytime can use a Internet telephony service in a where. Internet telephony communication with the user who is connected Internet softphone without headset or deaf people or speech-impaired people is difficult. Therefore, in this paper, we suggest mechanism of audio-text mode assignment on SIP Internet telephony system.

In this paper we explore, via an extensive simulation study, the performance of a Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol when integrating video, WAP and MP3 data packet traffic over a wireless picocellular system of very high capacity, with errors. Mobile terminals are considered to be high performance devices with extended storage capabilities which can act like cache memories streaming multimedia material. Our scheme achieves high aggregate channel throughput in all cases of traffic load, despite the very bursty nature of the examined traffic and the introduction of error in the system.

TurfNet is an internetworking architecture that enables communication among autonomous and heterogeneous network domains. The architecture uses a global identity namespace and does not require global addressing or a common internetworking protocol. It integrates the new concept of dynamic network composition with other recent architectural concepts, such as decoupling locators from identifiers. This paper analyzes whether the TurfNet naming and interdomain routing mechanisms can scale to networks of the size of the global Internet. To the authors' knowledge, this is one of the first scalability analyses of any next-generation internetworking proposal based on today's Internet AS topology. It adapts existing research results on the topology of the Internet's autonomous system graph and related results that quantify typical traffic patterns to construct a realistic model of an Internet-like TurfNet.

Though ad hoc network routing protocols, such as AODV and OLSR, have been extensively studied through simulations, there have been fewer evaluations of their software protocol implementations on real network testbed deployments. Consequently, validating the protocol functionality and performance on an actual experimental platform is imperative in order to understand relative merits or limitations under diferent network conditions. In this paper, we present our initial experimental evaluations of the publicly available AODV and OLSR implementations on the national Open Access Research Testbed (ORBIT) for next generation Wireless networks. We focused on the implementation issues involved in porting these protocols on an open-access testbed as well as the behavior of the proctols on the tested. Finally, we also looked at maximum achievable throughput using these protocols under diferent settings. Our preliminary observations indicate that in a static scenario, these two protocols can achieve comparable throughput, with AODV offering better stability than OLSR.

3G wireless networks aim at supporting real-time multimedia applications such as multimedia conferencing. The 3rd Partnership Project (3GPP) has designed IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) as the solution to provide rich multimedia communication for the next generation networks (NGN). Based on IETF standards such as IP, SIP and SDP protocols, it allows convergence of IP multimedia communications though existing IP networks. Interest in such communications is expected to grow over wireless network. To guarantee real-time and reliable multimedia transfer, there is a need to analyze multimedia traffic deployed over real 3G networks to help network operators identifying the required 3G IMS network capacity. Therefore, we propose to test real-time multimedia SIP communications through HSDPA network using G711 voice and H263 video codecs with different video frame rates. In this paper, we focus on media mean delay, jitter, packet loss and bandwidth use measurements with and without mobility.
