User mobility, combined with the rapidly growing number of multimedia applications, form a challenging and yet unresolved problem for the development of call admission control schemes over next generation wireless cellular networks. In recent work the behavior of H.263 videoconference traces have been modeled with the use of a discrete autoregressive (DAR(Garawi et al., 2006)) model. Based on this model, a new efficient CAC scheme for videoconference traffic over cellular networks was proposed in this work, which uses precomputed traffic scenarios for its decision-making. The scheme is shown, via an extensive simulation study, to clearly excel in comparison with well-known existing approaches, in terms of quality of service (QoS) provisioning to users receiving videoconference traffic.

Technological advancements and innovations have changed the market and services structure of communications industry drastically. Due to technological innovations and customer demands, boundary lines between telecommunications, information and media industries have blurred to a point that it is becoming difficult to distinguish between telecom, information and media services. The traditional vertically integrated networks are being deconstructed and are being transformed into horizontally interconnected function layers. The market structure is becoming more and more vertically integrated but technological advancements are dragging the markets towards more horizontally integrated value chain structures and clearly indicating the need for vertical disintegration of this market. This paper analyses the recent trends and structure of vertically integrated communication industry and also discusses the future horizontally integrated value chain structure and future horizontally integrated structural layout of carriers. In future networks, services will be offered on the basis of an integrated access platform and will no longer be dependent on a specific individual access technology. The main players will have to restructure themselves into horizontally separated areas of networks, services and sales to survive and to grow and will also have to focus on one of the areas where they have competitive edge.

Modern data and communication networks have been growing dramatically in diversity, heterogeneity and complexity. Hence the management of such dynamic networks is an extremely difficult task due to some key issues such as; the increasing network size and functionality, rapidly and continuously changing network topology and complexity. This paper introduces a management paradigm to give rise to the autonomic management solutions (i.e., activation, monitoring, control, and administration) of management functionalities. It also introduces an architecture that (1) places the various management functions (FCAPS) into a design structure that can be used to select those functions that may give way to autonomic management and (2) to design the algorithms that may fulfill the management function. This architecture consists of four horizontal logical layers (Products, Components, Services, and Resources Layers) and two vertical logical layers (Management layer and information layer). Autonomous management agents (Swarm agents in this context) sit in the management layer and can sense changes/events in the four horizontal layers and react autonomically to reconfigure and adapt themselves based on the information scattered and gathered over the network.

Mobile users are expected to be highly dynamic in next generation mobile networks. Additionally they will be served a wide variety of services with different transmission rates and expect high quality of service (QoS). Since the number of mobile subscribers is rapidly increasing and given the limited resources of any robust network, guarantee of high QoS is possible only by the deployment of network elements that optimally allocate network resources and instantly adapt to network conditions. In attempt to support mobility in IP networks, the hierarchical mobile IPv6 (HMIPv6) has been proposed. An important issue that has been highly overlooked in the design of HMIPv6 consists in its lack of a mechanism that can efficiently control and distribute traffic among multiple mobility anchor points (MAPs). In the absence of such mechanism, some MAPs may get congested while others remain underutilized. In such scenario, mobile users connecting to congested MAPs may experience significant packet drops and excessive queuing delays. This ultimately affects QoS. In this vein, this paper proposes an application-driven mechanism for selection of MAPs. The key idea behind the proposed scheme consists in the reference of access points to the transmission rate of the users' applications to decide which MAP visiting users should be registering with. The decision of MAPs is performed in a way that the load variance of all MAPs, serving the access point in question, is minimized. Issues related to the frequency of binding update messages are also considered in the selection of MAPs. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated via computer simulations. In terms of QoS, encouraging results are obtained: better traffic distribution among MAPs and lower handoff delays.

Due to the scarce energy supplies of a wireless sensor network (WSN) it is necessary to design the architecture and operation of the network so as to optimize the energy consumption. Since in a multi-hop WSN a sensor spends most of its energy for relaying data packets it is important to shorten the distance a packet has to travel until reaching the sink. These distances can be reduced seriously by deploying multiple sinks instead of one. In that case every sensor communicates with the closest sink. In order to achieve the shortest distances the sinks have to be deployed in a coordinated way. In this paper we give a mathematical model that determines the locations of the sinks minimizing the sensors' average distance from the nearest sink. First we present an iterative algorithm called global that is able to find the sink locations given by the mathematical model. However, it uses global information about the network that is impractical in wide area sensor networks, thus we propose a novel iterative algorithm called lhop that carries out the sink deployment based only on the location information of the neighboring nodes while the location of the distant nodes is being approximated. We compared the two algorithms and show that lhop approaches the performance of global very closely. Another important issue is that the neighboring nodes of the sinks have a high traffic load, thus the lifetime of the network can be elongated by relocating the sinks from time to time. Based on the lhop algorithm we propose the lhop relocation algorithm for the coordinated relocation of multiple sinks. The simulation results show that the algorithm extend the network lifetime severely.

Real-time services such as VoIP and multimedia streaming are affected during a mobile's rapid handoff due to the associated delay resulting from associated handoff operations of discovery, detection, configuration, registration, media redirection, and processing at different network nodes. Redundant communication path of any signaling and media adds to the delay during session setup and media delivery. This paper highlights the overall problem associated with redundant routing in a 3GPP2-based MMD (multimedia domain) environment and proposes several mechanisms to mitigate these problems. We also compare these mechanisms and select one for existing IMS/MMD networks that use MIPv4 as the mobility protocol. We present the implementation details of the selected redundant routing mitigation technique in the experimental MMD environment and verify the effectiveness by analyzing the measurement results.

Network topology represents the interconnection between directly or indirectly connected devices in a network. To know about up-to-date network topology (i.e. layer2 and layer3) is important for efficient network management. In this paper, we propose an automatic topology discovery mechanism of centralized network in NGN. The discovered topology is about IP logical topology instead of physical topology. Our mechanism has two assumptions. One is that the discovered nodes are located in transit area only. Another is that layer2 devices do not display.

We propose a new cache coherency scheme named HCCS(hybrid cache coherency scheme) to facilitate ubiquitous data access of mobile clients. To cope with the limitations of ubiquitous computing environments, it integrates the cache invalidation scheme using broadcast channel into the publish/subscribe-based data synchronization scheme using two-way communication channel. We present novel algorithms and system architecture for the HCCS. By integrating two schemes, the HCCS provides substantial benefits: allows updates on the mobile client which are restricted in the cache invalidation scheme using broadcast channel and disconnected operations, improves the scalability. The HCCS scheme also gives proper support to the short disconnection of mobile clients, dynamically adapts to changes of disconnection period of the mobile clients.
