While the IEEE 802.15.4/Zigbee protocol stack is being considered as a promising technology for low-cost low-power wireless sensor networks (WSNs), several issues in their specifications are still open. One of those ambiguous issues is how to build a synchronized cluster-tree network, which is quite suitable for ensuring QoS support in WSNs. In fact, the current IEEE 802.15.4/Zigbee specifications restrict the synchronization in the beacon-enabled mode (by the generation of periodic beacon frames) to star-based networks, while they support multi-hop networking using the peer-to-peer mesh topology, but with no synchronization. Even though both specifications mention the possible use of cluster-tree topologies, which combine multi-hop and synchronization features, the description on how to effectively construct such a network topology is missing. This paper tackles this problem, unveiling the ambiguities regarding the use of the cluster-tree topology and proposing a synchronization mechanism based on Time Division Beacon Scheduling to construct cluster-tree WSNs. We also propose a methodology for an efficient duty-cycle management in each router (cluster-head) of a cluster-tree WSN that ensures the fairest use of bandwidth resources. The feasibility of the proposal is clearly demonstrated through an experimental test bed based on our own implementation of the IEEE 802.15.4/Zigbee protocols.

Lots of facts prove that the technique advantage does not mean the market advantage. Therefore we should pay more attention to the market strategies rather than the blind expansion on 3G (3rd generation, International Mobile Telecommunications-2000) network. Based on the theory of surplus value, this paper raises a settlement standard calculation model to achieve the content-based billing of mobile data service for 3G. This paper is organized as follows, firstly, it defines the conception of content-based billing; secondly it analyzes the existing billing mode, and illustrates content-based billing would greatly facilitate the development of data service in the age of 3G; finally it puts forward a settlement standard calculation model based on the theory of surplus value to implement the content-based billing.

UWB (ultra-wide band) system that utilizes the unlicensed 3.1 - 10.6 GHz UWB band, as regulated in the United States by the Federal communications Commission (FCC) Regulations, and there is a trend that UWB and Bluetooth technology are combined together for developing a next-generation low-power, low-cost ad hoc networking solution that will expand Bluetooth technology's current success. In this paper, we propose a novel piconet system model in which Bluetooth topology and MB-OFDM UWB devices are combined together to form a new ad hoc piconet system. For our proposed system, first, we used Bluetooth piconet's topology as reference to construct our proposed system's topology, considering both the path-loss effect and the using of TFC code to model our proposed scheme's inter-piconet interference. Second, we use the BER graph to evaluate our proposed system's performance taking into account of the Inter-piconet Interference influence, furthermore, we propose a 6-Bands MB-OFDM model to enhance our network's BER performance. Definitely, our model can be considered to provide a solid foundation for future interference aware UWB-Bluetooth protocols.

GSM is the most widely deployed 2 nd generation digital cellular standard, with over 2 billion subscribers in some 213 countries and adding about 1000 new users per minute! Originally developed in the 1980s, and first deployed in 1991, GSM is a TDMA+FDMA system, providing wide area voice communications using 200 KHz carriers. Subsequently, GSM evolved into a 2.5G standard with the introduction of packet data transmission technology (GPRS) and higher data rates via higher order modulation schemes (EDGE). More recently, GERAN standards organization has been evolving further to coexist with and provide comparable services to 3G technologies. In this paper, we first provide an overview of the traditional 2G and 2.5G GSM, and then discuss the so-called "GERAN Evolution" into the 3G world. We conclude by detailing a few selected aspects of the GERAN Evolution. Overall, we aspire to demonstrate that GERAN is a vibrant, living and growing technology that exploits the latest advances in communications and signal processing.

This paper addresses the problem of tracking a mobile target using a mobile sensor network while minimizing the energy consumption and maintaining the network connectivity during the tracking process. While minimizing the tracking energy consumption is proved to be NP-complete, an approximately optimal solution named breadth-first leader-follower strategy is presented. Nodes close to the target predicted position find their following nodes based on breadth-first search and lead them to cover the probable region where the target may exist next time instant. Meantime the overall network connectivity can be maintained. We have proved that the energy consumption of the nodes moving under the control of the proposed algorithm is within a scalar factor of the optimal consumption. Simulation has been conducted to demonstrate the performance of the algorithm in different situations. The results show that our algorithm can yield good performance in target tracking while consuming little energy.

Due to the continuous massive growth of the global Internet, available IPv4 network addresses will run out within the next years. The solution to this problem is the IPv6 protocol with its vast address space. During the transition period from IPv4 to IPv6, both protocols will coexist, which makes it necessary to have transition techniques in place to maintain interoperability. These transition techniques have an inevitable impact on network performance. To quantify this impact, we set up a testbed to measure the performance penalties introduced by four transition techniques. In general, measurements of the transition performance can be carried out on different layers. The decision to pick the session initiation protocol (SIP) as application layer protocol is based on the fact that voice over IP may be one of the major drivers for IPv6. This paper presents measurement results and conclusions for transition and native scenarios that we gained in performance studies.

This paper deals with sensor networking based on ZigBee and Internet using IEEE 1451 smart transducer interface architecture. The contribution begins with introduction to the IEEE 1451 smart transducer - network interface for sensors and actuators as an emerging, standard-based networking framework. next part of the paper reviews some concepts of ZigBee architecture aimed at connecting wireless sensors and actuators through ZigBee to Intranets or Internet. The kernel of the paper deals with design of a software architecture stemming from technical standards or standard proposals. This paper focuses namely on design of software architectures of communication interconnecting devices in between ZigBee and Internet.

In recent years, researches and developments on ITS are carried out to solve many problems in road traffic. IVC (inter-vehicular communications) is the key technology to realize the next generation ITS. Vehicles install telecommunication equipment, and exchange safety information directly with each other. The authors have developed vehicular collision avoidance support system (VCASS) based on IVC in order to prevent a vehicular accident beforehand. The system grasps the relative locations of vehicles by exchanging the GPS information in each vehicle. Then the system warns drivers if there is a danger of collision. VCASS can drastically reduce the potential accidents of vehicular collisions but causes warning errors and unnecessary warnings. In order to improve the accuracy of VCASS, we propose a new VCASSv2 that introduces GPS+INS hybrid scheme. We evaluate the performance of conventional collision judgment algorithm and the proposed scheme for VCASSv2. We have verified the effectiveness of the new VCASSv2 in typical road environments.
