During the next years, the number of wireless sensor and communication systems used in cars for ubiquitous applications will increase significantly. The operational frequencies will span from the low frequency range (9 kHz) up to the mmWave (79 GHz) range, the bandwidth from narrowband band to ultra-wide band (UWB). Increasingly, however, the electromagnetic spectrum represents a scarce natural resource of strategic national socio-economic importance. Careful international spectrum engineering and regulation is required, in order to ensure coexistence between existing and planned services. Automotive applications traditionally have used free and unlicensed ISM (industrial, scientific, medical) bands, which will be overcrowded in the future. Therefore, the automotive industry needs dedicated frequency allocations for future applications. UWB is one of the most promising new concepts for automotive applications. The SARA (short range automotive radar frequency allocation) group was founded by the automotive industry in 2001, a newcomer in the field of frequency management SARA's activities focused on international frequency regulation and standardization of UWB automotive short range radar (SRR) for advanced driver assistance and safety applications. As a result of successful SARA activities, the market introduction of these sensors started with the Mercedes-Benz S-class in 2005, followed by BMW's introduction of SRR in 2007 in the 5-series. The SARA group has expanded the focus of its activity from UWB SRR to general frequency needs for automotive radar. With this new focus, SARA has become the strategic automotive radar frequency allocation group. This contribution gives an overview on actual and planned wireless sensing systems used in cars and on the necessary spectrum resources for the technologies to be applied. Finally, the current and planned activities of the SARA group are outlined.

The ICT radar is an information-communication technology system for early warning and collision avoidance on roads and motorways. This radar uses special sensor network, which - spanned over the moving vehicles and road obstacles - transmits automatically warning signals to the back of column and enables distant drivers to stop in time or to do such operations automatically. Large-scale simulations have been carried out, which show that in typical scenario the number of collisions decreases from some great number to zero as the radar usage increases from 0% to 100%. Even at 50% of random radar usage almost all huge collisions are excluded. Typical data of simulations are as follows: one lane road;50 vehicles randomly spaced, distances drawn from normal distribution, next smoothed;average speed 90km/h;reaction time of a driver - drawn from random distribution (mean 1s);first vehicle in column suddenly stopped;model of collisions - domino-alike;protocol of radio communication - modified ALOHA;size of alert packet - 100 bytes containing data: speed, acceleration, coordinates (GPS);kind of alerts: sharp brake, airbag explosion standing vehicle;transmission speed 8Mb/s;average rate - 1packet/ms/node;time for reliable warning 0.1s;range of warning 800m;coverage area - triangular, backwards oriented;total number of scenarios - 5.000.

The routing methods which used in the wireless sensor network deal with the clustering method to diminish the amount of data transmission from the energy efficiency view. However, the clustering methods cause several problems in energy consumption at the cluster head node. Dynamic clustering is a method which used to supplement a high energy consumption problem by distributing energy consumption through the re-selection of the cluster head node. But, this method changes cluster structure every time the cluster head node is re-selected, which causes energy consumption. Namely, the dynamic clustering method approaches examined in previous researches involve the repetitive processes of cluster head node selection. This consumes a high amount of energy during the set-up process of cluster generation. Consequently, this paper proposes the hybrid clustering method that fixes the cluster and selects the head node in a round-robin method. The hybrid clustering approach is an energy-efficient method that realizes consistent and balanced energy consumption in each node of a generated cluster to prevent repetitious set-up processes as in the LEACH method. The propriety of the proposed method is substantiated with a simulation experiment.

The routing algorithm used in the wireless sensor network features the clustering method to reduce the amount of data transmission from the energy efficiency perspective. However, the clustering method results in high energy consumption at the cluster head node. Dynamic clustering is a method used to resolve such a problem by distributing energy consumption through the re-selection of the cluster head node. Still, dynamic clustering modifies the cluster structure every time the cluster head node is re-selected, which causes energy consumption. In other words, the dynamic clustering approaches examined in previous studies involve the repetitive processes of cluster head node selection. This consumes a high amount of energy during the set-up process of cluster generation. In order to resolve the energy consumption problem associated with the repetitive set-up, this paper proposes the round-robin cluster header (RRCH) method that fixes the cluster and selects the head node in a round-robin method The RRCH approach is an energy-efficient method that realizes consistent and balanced energy consumption in each node of a generated cluster to prevent repetitious set-up processes as in the LEACH method. The propriety of the proposed method is substantiated with a simulation experiment.

As the Wireless LAN (WLAN) becomes prevalent, users are demanding more and more features such as high throughput and low power consumption. To provide higher channel efficiency, contention-based multipolling mechanism was proposed to improve the single polling and contention-free multipolling mechanisms. However, when this medium access control (MAC) protocol is used, wireless stations would need to spend much time in overhearing which tends to waste energy and reduce battery lifetime. We propose a power efficient multipolling mechanism to arrange wireless stations into groups and put them into sleep mode when other stations are transmitting. From the simulation results, we find the proposed mechanism can address the issue of overhearing while also keeping the flexibility and high channel efficiency properties.

Optical Burst Switching (OBS) technology offers a promising solution for the next generation optical Internet. Since, TCP protocol is the most dominant transport protocol for the Internet, it is essential to address the implementation of TCP over the OBS technology. The main consideration in TCP performances over OBS is the interaction between the TCP congestion control mechanism and OBS-specific schemes. Different studies have considered TCP issues in OBS networks. It is noteworthy to note that all developed studies have not considered contention resolution at OBS layer, which may have a significant impact on TCP performances. In this paper, we address the implementation of TCP protocol over a novel OBS network architecture supported by a specific contention resolution scheme based on wavelength conversion, burst segmentation and optical buffering. For sake of better performances, we propose a segment retransmission scheme in which segments lost in case of contention resolution failure are retransmitted at the OBS layer. Also, we develop an analytic model for the mathematical analysis of TCP performances over OBS networks implementing these schemes. Finally, simulation experiments are conducted to validate the proposed approach and evaluate its performances.

The DDoS attack that is one of the most threatening attacks in the wired network has been already extended in the wireless mobile network, owing to the appearance of DDoS attack tool against mobile phone. In the future, the latent threats for DDoS attacks should be resolved for the induction of successful convergence network. However, due to the current problems to defend them, such as the absence of the converged defense or internetworking between each defense system, the research for cooperation architecture between them allowing each defense process is indispensable. In this paper, we propose a scalable defense architecture based on overlay routing against DDoS attacks in consideration of the capacity of each node, providing speedy notification of attack detection on converged network and detouring of the normal packets before the fundamental exclusion of attack agents. Our simulation results show that our architecture provides the speedy notification and decreases the damage of normal traffic even in the form of converged DDoS attacks.

In this paper, we present the design of Aneka, a .NET based service-oriented platform for desktop grid computing that provides: (i) a configurable service container hosting pluggable services for discovering, scheduling and balancing various types of workloads and (ii) a flexible and extensible framework/API supporting various programming models including threading, batch processing, MPI and dataflow. Users and developers can easily use different programming models and the services provided by the container to run their applications over desktop Grids managed by Aneka. We present the implementation of both the essential and advanced services within the platform. We evaluate the system with applications using the grid task and dataflow models on top of the infrastructure and conclude with some future directions of the current system.

The recent information technology (IT) researches aim a ubiquitous environment ultimately. We introduce an intelligent gadget network (IGN) that is a research for a personalization service, and propose a buffer management scheme of gateway gadget that uses a wireless local area network (WLAN) to bind an IGN and an external Internet network. An IGN records everyday life information of a person including an environment and a vital information, and the person can use a personalization service by the recorded information. Therefore, IGN gadgets can require a service of high data rate such as a multimedia that sends and receive with an external Internet. At this time, if a gateway gadget can not support that required data rate, it becomes a bottleneck point. When considering a transmission rate and a current established infrastructure, it is useful to implement a gateway gadget using wireless LAN. This paper proposes a buffer management scheme in medium access control (MAC) layer of gateway gadget that adopts a IEEE802.11e WLAN to connect an IGN with an external Internet network. The proposed buffer mechanism is based on the random early discard (RED) algorithm. The proposed method is simulated in the prototype board that is developed for a next generation wireless LAN standard of IEEE802.11n. The simulation results show that the buffer method in a MAC level is useful for quality of service (QoS) because it lowers drop rates and makes the drop rate of wireless communication system uniform.

Designing and composing pervasive systems of the next generation networks is a technological as well as social challenge due to its complexity and its unpredictable nature. In such environments a significant amount of information directly related to users are fetched, exchanged, processed and delivered as personalized services. Due to automation of infrastructure both users and services have many agents acting on their behalf. Respectively in pervasive systems one of the most problematic concerns arises on user right to maintain privacy. This paper is focused on instruments to enable and maintain privacy through a subtle fusion of different privacy enabling techniques. We present conceptual privacy enabling architecture of infrastructural pervasive middleware that uses trust management, privacy negotiation and identity management during the inter-entity communication lifecycle. Using this approach balance between the conflicting interest of pervasiveness on one hand and protecting privacy on the other is achieved.
