sensor network computing can be characterized as resource-constrained distributed computing using unreliable, low bandwidth communication. This combination of characteristics poses significant software development and maintenance challenges. Effective and efficient debugging tools for sensor network are thus critical. Existent development tools, such as TOSSIM, EmStar, ATEMU and Avrora, provide useful debugging support, but not with the fidelity, scale and functionality that we believe are sufficient to meet the needs of the next generation of *** this paper, we propose a debugger, called S2DB, based on a distributed full system sensor network simulator with high fidelity and scalable performance, DiSenS. By exploiting the potential of DiSenS as a scalable full system simulator, S2DB extends conventional debugging methods by adding novel device level, program source level, group level, and network level debugging abstractions. The performance evaluation shows that all these debugging features introduce overhead that is generally less than 10% into the simulator and thus making S2DB an efficient and effective debugging tool for sensor networks. Multistage integration of visual information in the brain allows people to respond quickly to most significant stimuli while preserving the ability to recognize small details in the image. Implementation of this principle in technical systems can lead to more efficient processing procedures. The multistage approach to image processing, described in this paper, comprises both main types of cortical multistage convergence. One of these types occurs within each visual pathway and the other between the pathways. This approach maps input images into a flexible hierarchy which reflects the complexity of the image data. The procedures of temporal image decomposition and hierarchy formation are described in mathematical terms. The multistage system highlights spatial regularities, which are passed through a number of transformational levels to generate a coded representation of the image which encapsulates, in a computer manner, structure on different hierarchical levels in the image. At each processing stage a single output result is computed to allow a very quick response from the system. The result is represented as an activity pattern, which can be compared with previously computed patterns on the basis of the closest match.

Current and future requirements of aerospace sensors and transducers demand the design and development of a new family of sensing devices, with emphasis on reduced weight, power consumption, and physical size. This new generation of sensors and transducers will possess a certain degree of intelligence in order to provide the end user with critical data in a more efficient manner. communication between networks of traditional or next-generation sensors can be accomplished by a Wireless sensor Network (WSN) developed by NASA's Instrumentation Branch and ASRC Aerospace Corporation at Kennedy Space Center (KSC), consisting of at least one central station and several remote stations and their associated software. The central station is application-dependent and can be implemented on different computer hardware, including industrial, handheld, or PC-104 single-board computers, on a variety of operating systems: embedded Windows, Linux, VxWorks, etc. The central stations and remote stations share a similar radio frequency (RF) core module hardware that is modular in design. The main components of the remote stations are an RF core module, a sensor interface module, batteries, and a power management module. These modules are stackable, and a common bus provides the flexibility to stack other modules for additional memory, increased processing, etc. WSN can automatically reconfigure to an alternate frequency if interference is encountered during operation. In addition, the base station will autonomously search for a remote station that was perceived to be lost, using relay stations and alternate frequencies. Several wireless remote-station types were developed and tested in the laboratory to support different sensing technologies, such as resistive temperature devices, silicon diodes, strain gauges, pressure transducers, and hydrogen leak detectors.

Reliable data delivery in wireless sensor networks is a challenging issue due to the error prone nature of wireless communication and the frangibility of little sensors. However, readings of geographically proximate sensors are strongly correlated, so it's not only unnecessary but also wastes energy to deliver data in all sensors reliably. sensor nodes could be clustered and only the aggregated data need to be reliably delivered. In this paper, we propose a new reliable, energy-efficient clustering protocol CREED. CREED takes advantage of the multi-rate capabilities of 802.11 a, b, g technologies by reducing energy consumption per bit for shorter transmission range. A dynamic backup scheme EDDS based on nodes' residual energy is presented to enhance the fault tolerance of CREED. EDDS supports quick cluster head selection and failure recovery while only need exchange a few messages. CREED also includes an energy aware multipath inter-cluster routing to guarantee reliable data delivery. Simulation results verify the performance of CREED. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

A number of technology factors including increased connectivity to a diverse range of devices, variety of wireless access technologies (e.g. cellular, WLAN, WPAN, sensor), and highly reconfigurable software and hardware components have been driving telecommunications systems to provide ubiquitous and transparent services. At the same time, dynamically reconfigurable and/or adaptive communication systems that are capable of operating in a variety of modes increases the heterogeneity of operating communications environments when used by users (including applications and devices) that have conflicting capabilities and requirements. Generic Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) are a key technology component to realize flexible and intelligent management of available modes of operations and adaptation of applications because they enable access and control of heterogeneous technologies in a uniform way. The case study presented in this paper explores the concept of generic APIs in the context of adaptive and reconfigurable communications systems. A generic API called Unified Link Layer API (ULLA) developed by a consortium of European researchers (from industry and academia) is reviewed to demonstrate the benefits offered by such a technology to the dynamic optimization of wireless multimedia systems.

Situation management systems for use in the modern battlefield and for disaster response require the continuous collection and interpretation of field data. Typically, this data must be collected from areas that are either remote or have suffered heavy damage and therefore are not supported by either existing terrestrial infrastructure or wireless networks. When traditional communication modes are not available, the cost associated with acquiring situational data via alternative methods such as duplex satellite telemetry is prohibitively high. Additionally, access to these areas tends to be tenuous or infrequent, requiring the remote data-gathering assets themselves to be reliable, resilient, and able to run for an extended duration from a small power source. Simplex telemetry - using Code Phase Division Multiple Access (CPDMA (TM)) spread spectrum algorithms - employs satellite connectivity to provide data exfiltration from remote areas. Furthermore, CPDMA (TM) shifts signal processing complexity away from the many distributed transmitters used in traditional systems and places it into a single receiver. The transfer to the single receiver, a sensor Enabled Notification System (SENS) Applique, significantly reduces the cost and complexity of data exfiltration and optimizes the system to process many simultaneously generated transmissions from data-gathering end-point devices. This paper discusses the application of commercial simplex telemetry to operational knowledge acquisition in areas where traditional communications modes are not available, and explores the next generation system development paths of dual and terrestrial simplex communications.

The scarcest resource for most of the wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is energy and one of the major factors in energy consumption for WSNs is due to communication. Not only transmission but also reception is the source of energy consumption. The lore to decrease energy consumption is to turn off radio circuit when it is not needed. This is why TDMA has advantages over contention based methods. Time slot assignment algorithm is an essential part of TDMA based systems. Although centralized time slot assignment protocols are preferred in many WSNs, centralized approach is not scalable. In this paper, a new energy efficient and delay sensitive distributed time slot assignment algorithm (DTSM) is proposed for sensor networks under convergecast traffic pattern. DTSM which is developed as part of the military monitory (MILMON) system introduced in [16], aims to operate with low delay and low energy. Instead of collision based periods, it assigns slots by the help of tiny request slots. While traditional slot assignment algorithms do not allow assigning the same slot within two hop neighbors, because of the hidden node problem, DTSM can assign, if assignment is suitable for convergecast traffic. Simulation results have shown that delay and energy consumption performance of DTSM is superior to FPRP, DRAND, and TRAMA which are the most known distributed slot assignment protocols for WSNs or ad hoc networks. Although DTSM has somewhat long execution time, its scalability characteristic may provide application specific time durations. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Monitoring is an issue of primary concern in current and next generation networked systems. For ex, the objective of sensor networks is to monitor their surroundings for a variety of different applications like atmospheric conditions, wildlife behavior, and troop movements among others. Similarly, monitoring in data networks is critical not only for accounting and management, but also for detecting anomalies and attacks. Such monitoring applications are inherently continuous and distributed, and must be designed to minimize the communication overhead that they introduce. In this context we introduce and study a fundamental class of problems called "thresholded counts" where we must return the aggregate frequency count of an event that is continuously monitored by distributed nodes with a user-specified accuracy whenever the actual count exceeds a given threshold *** this paper we propose to address the problem of thresholded counts by setting local thresholds at each monitoring node and initiating communication only when the locally observed data exceeds these local thresholds. We explore algorithms in two categories: static and adaptive thresholds. In the static case, we consider thresholds based on a linear combination of two alternate strategies, and show that there exists an optimal blend of the two strategies that results in minimum communication overhead. We further show that this optimal blend can be found using a steepest descent search. In the adaptive case, we propose algorithms that adjust the local thresholds based on the observed distributions of updated information. We use extensive simulations not only to verify the accuracy of our algorithms and validate our theoretical results, but also to evaluate the performance of our algorithms. We find that both approaches yield significant savings over the naive approach of centralized processing. Copyright 2006 ACM.
