Use of Telecollaboration (TC) systems based on sensor networks in education is an emerging field of research. It is feasible to connect many small wireless micro-sensors ("smart dust") [36], PDAs and cellular phones into a network that extends a TC education system. It is expected that those sensors collect and fuse various data and transmit the information through the network for enhanced TC educational outcomes. However, the traditional challenges remain the same. This includes the ability of managing resources such as: power, bandwidth, distances, performance of the sensors and related hardware. At the heart of the sensor network paradigm are the human factors. We realize that the concept of the human research is native to such emerging technologies as Wireless sensor networks, sensor enabling facilities, ubiquitous computing devices and all IP next generation networks that are challenging the rationale of traditional information fusion systems. The technology has reached a level of maturity at which it is reasonable to discover sensors based on the context awareness, pertinence, query for appropriate data, and fuse it using applicable fusion rules, computing and communication infrastructure. In this paper we introduce innovative concepts for support of TC solutions, identify design, development methodologies as well as challenges for TC systems. © 2005 IEEE.

One motivation of mobile next-generation networks (NGN) is the ubiquitous computing abilities, which provide automatic handovers for any moving computing devices in a globally networked environment. The vertical handover is defined as the process of changing from one technology to another. For example, the data services are switched to Wireless Local Area networks (WLAN) from the previously attached Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) networks. Identity Management is considered important for vertical handovers for managing continued access to network resources. In this paper, we address several aspects of identity management requirements in the vertical handovers between UWS and WLAN.

Aiming at the problems that gatekeeper for video communication(called VCGK or Video Gatekeeper) can not support greater network scale and has the lower access efficiency in multi-zone, we study and analyze routing technology for largescale video softswitch from multi-zone and hierarchical system framework. We research on designing routing architecture reasonably, importing distributed agent technology and delaminating routing framework based on policies. By using TRIP protocol for communication between agents, we deal with the update and broadcasting of call routing information concentratedly, converge routing info, predigest routing process, and solve the key problems of call control and connection control about-real-time video communication. Considering routing QoS and network load balance, we put forward a dynamic routing transfer policy based on distributed routing agent. Finally this paper forms an economical and effective call routing addressing solution which can meet the requests of next generation largescale multimedia video communication network, and solve the difficulty of location in H.323 system appropriately. It can help to enlarge the scale of video communication network based on H.323 protocol.

Traditionally, information fusion systems assume that the information is gathered from known sensors over proprietary communication networks and fuse using fixed rules of information fusion and designated computing and communication resources. Emerging technologies like wireless sensor networks, TEDS enabled legacy sensors, ubiquitous computing devices and all IP next generation networks are challenging the rationale of conventional information fusion systems. The technology has matured to a point where it is reasonable to discover sensors based on the context, establish relevance, query for appropriate data, and fuse it using the most appropriate fusion rule, using ubiquitous computing and communication environment in an opportunistic manner. We define such fusion systems as opportunistic information fusion systems. In this paper we introduce this new paradigm for information fusion and identify plausible approaches and challenges to design, develop and deploy the proposed next generation opportunistic information fusion systems.

In preparation for the next World Radiocommunication conference (WRC) in 2007, ITU is developing a methodology for calculating the spectrum requirements of further developments of IMT-2000 and systems beyond IMT-2000. This paper describes this new ITU method, which is based on contributions by the WINNER project to a large extent. Special emphasis is laid on describing the method for calculation of the required system capacity, which is based on a M/G/1-FCFS queue with non-preemptive priorities. Furthermore, we present the results of applying the method to an example scenario, which is derived from the scenario used for dimensioning the spectrum currently identified for IMT-2000. The comparison with the results the previously used ITU spectrum requirement estimation method delivered for this scenario leads to the conclusion that the new method delivers reasonable results in the same order of magnitude, but provides a significantly better founded estimate of spectrum requirement. © 2005 IEEE.

The era of wireless communication and discrete, autonomous sensors platforms is upon us. Advances in radio-frequency (RF) technology from simple two-way personal communications to smart, independent, sensor command, and control units has greatly expanded the applications domain. In the past four years, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) scientists and engineers have developed smart sensor tags (health tags) for the Army to monitor environmental conditions of high value assets over their lifetime (10 yrs). These field tested health tags uniquely identify individual assets, record and store data, run diagnostic and prognostic protocols, identify asset performance status (GO, CAUTION, NO-GO), and provide all this information over a wireless RF link to a portable, hand held reader. Leveraging the innovation achieved for health monitoring tags, the next generation active sensor tag has been developed (FlexiTag (TM)) providing reduced tag size and manufacturing cost, greater sensor interface capabilities, and a flexible substrate for surface mount conformity. The design has a greatly reduced part count due to the use of newly available, highly integrated RF chip sets. In addition to asset health monitoring, the new tag platform opens up additional application areas such as TTL (tagging, tracking, and locating), real-time machine fault monitoring, and ad-hoc sensor networking. This paper will compare and contrast the FlexiTag (TM) to its predecessors and discuss the current application areas it is being applied to.

Ultra wideband (UWB) technology is fast emerging as a potential contender for next generation wireless sensor networks because of the inherent low power requirements and built in security. Time hopping and direct sequence based spread spectrum techniques are employed for UWB multiple access systems, which makes the correlation properties of these techniques a critical issue in a multi-user (multiple nodes) scenario. In this paper we present a comparative performance analysis of different spreading codes namely, PN, Gold and Kasami using PPM and PAM modulation schemes over AWGN and IEEE 802.15.3a channel models. We use a PRake receiver for multipath channel. We observe that DS spreading technique is more suitable than TH for multi-user systems. Simulation results show that Kasami codes perform better than Gold and PN codes for all considered cases. However, Kasami codes can accommodate less number of nodes for a given code length due to their reduced set size. Thus, for small sensor networks Kasami codes should be deployed, where as for larger sensor networks Gold and PN codes are more suitable
