The 4th International conference on Mobile Data Management (MDM 2003) took place between the 21st and 24th of January 2003 at the Monash University Caulfield Campus in Melbourne, Australia. The conference highlighted a major issue in sensor networks, ubiquitous commerce and next generation communication services. Reflecting the wide spectrum of topics, the presentations of the selected papers were organized in nine sessions. The final session on Resource Discovery included papers on autonomous services for smart mobile devices, global location services and a spatial discovery service.

Local positioning will be one of the most exciting features of the next generation of wireless systems. With this technique a mobile device can either gather the information about its position or can be localized from elsewhere. Completely new concepts and features in wireless data transmission and transponder systems will be enabled by this. Self organizing sensor networks, ubiquitous computing, location sensitive billing, context dependent information services, tracking and guiding are only some of the numerous possible application areas. This paper gives an overview over existing wireless positioning solutions and attempts to structure different techniques and applications. Furthermore two novel positioning systems currently developed by Siemens are featured as system examples. First a neural cellular positioning system NCPS is introduced. This system is designed for positioning solutions for industrial, medical and consumer scenarios and is based on existing wireless voice or data infrastructure. Second the Siemens local positioning radar (LPR) is presented. This system is designed for cm-precision and realtime positioning in the area of industrial logistics, control and automation. The application examples are completed by an application in the field of augmented reality computing.

Distributed sensor networks are a promising technology for surveillance and reconnaissance in many applications, such as next generation C4ISR and the digital battlefield. The dearth of effective security mechanisms are a main obstacle to the acceptance of distributed sensor networks. As research pushes sensor nodes to be smaller and ubiquitous, security issues become paramount. Security in sensor networks needs to be considered during the early phases of development. This paper describes a decentralized solution to the problem of securely checking node membership in ad hoc sensor networks. This method does not require each node to maintain a membership list, does not require communication between the base station and verifying node, and it efficiently handles dynamic membership events (node leaves and joins). It is based on the concept of quasi-commutative hash functions, also called one-way accumulators. The paper analyzes resource requirements and suggests new ways to optimize the use of one-way accumulators while maintaining security in sensor node applications.

In this paper we analyze the utility of mobile middleware platform technology applied in a realistic military exercise scenario. The system was demonstrated to the Office of Naval Research in partial fulfillment of the US Marines Corps next generation ground logistics command and control (GLC2) platform. In particular, we will highlight four mission critical activities, namely a) alerting and notification of information to a wide variety of handheld devices, b) a publish and subscribe interface for mobile devices to an ontology driven knowledge dissemination (ODKD) system via the middleware platform, c) link/Status detection and seamless switchover from a secure wired to a secure wireless (802.11b) infrastructure and d) autonomic sensor data parsing and injection for use in a course of action tool simulator.

Point-to-multipoint broadband wireless access (BWA) is an attractive solution to provide advanced data services to users who do not have easy access to wireline data services. However, BWA will need to support delay sensitive services as users and applications are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Wireless packet scheduling is an important part of quality-of-service (QoS) provisioning in BWA. The biggest difficulty in wireless packet scheduling is the location-dependent channel errors. Channel condition independent fair scheme (CIF) (T.S. Eugene, et al., March 1998) uses explicit leading/lagging approach to compensate for the erroneous channel state, but is not able to satisfy both rapid convergent guaranteed throughput and fairness. In this paper, we propose to use the token bank fair queuing (TBFQ) scheduling algorithm as a QoS provisioning mechanism for an asymmetric broadband point-to-multipoint wireless LAN. We consider the throughput and fairness performance of TBFQ under location-dependent channel error condition with variable packet length. This work is an extension of our previous work in applying TBFQ in next generation cellular networks.

An admission control mechanism is a key component of any framework that provides guaranteed delay service to heterogeneous real-time traffic. In this paper, we propose a general framework for admission control to provide delay guarantees in the error-prone wireless systems. By "general" we mean that the scheduling policies from a large class can be plugged in this framework and an admission control condition can be obtained for general arrival processes. The generality of the framework will enable us to use many scheduling policies that have not been considered yet for the error-prone wireless systems. The designed framework only assumes statistical knowledge of channel state and instantaneous knowledge of channel state is not required. Apart from providing delay guarantees in the presence of channel errors, the proposed framework provides (1) a good balance of packet drop and session blocking (2) isolation in the sense that once a session is admitted, then its guarantees (delay and packet drop) are not affected by other sessions.

Over the last decade there have been significant advances in digital signal processing algorithms and techniques. Examples are advances in ground moving target indicator (GMTI) processing, space-time adaptive processing (STAP), target discrimination, and electronic countercountermeasures (ECCM). All these advances have improved the capabilities of radar sensors. Major improvements expected in the next several years will come from exploiting collaborative network-centric architectures to leverage synergies among individual sensors. Such an approach has become feasible as a result of major advances in network computing, as well as communication technologies in both wireless and fiber networks. The exponential growth of digital technology, together with highly capable networks, enable in-depth exploitation of sensor synergy, including multi-aspect sensing, for example, to accurately locate and characterize mobile targets. Recently, new signal processing algorithms exploiting multi-sensor data have been demonstrated in non-real-time, achieving improved performance against surface mobile targets by leveraging high-speed sensor networks. The paper describes a system architecture, computing and communication technologies, and experiments designed to demonstrate a significant advancement in exploiting complex ground moving target indicator (GMTI) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data to accurately geo-locate and identify mobile targets.
