The growth in cellular networks has motivated research on broadband access technologies for the support of diverse services over wireless networks. Wireless asynchronous transfer mode (WATM) has been proposed as solution for nextgeneration wireless and personal communicationnetworks and ATM Adaptation Layer 2 (AAL2) has been identified suitable for the support of low data rate and delay sensitive voice traffic generated in cellular networks. We study the performance of AAL2 over a burst error wireless channel. Analytical expressions for performance measures of interest are derived for the Gilbert-Elliott (1960, 1963) channel and numerical results are presented to demonstrate the effect of burst errors on the AAL2 frame structure and the AAL2 performance.

Wireless asynchronous transfer mode (WATM) has been proposed as a transport solution for the nextgeneration of wireless and personal communicationnetworks. ATM adaptation layer 2 (AAL2) has been identified as suitable for the support of low data rate and delay sensitive voice traffic generated in those cellular networks. Wireless ATM is of particular interest for future tactical networks, which will employ ATM technology in the wide area, such as the NATO POST-2000 tactical communications systems. AAL2 as defined by ITU-T standards does not perform very efficiently over wireless links because of the limited protection against errors and because of the way AAL2 packets are delineated within the ATM payload. A novel delineation mechanism is proposed for AAL2 to be used over high BER channels, such as wireless links, while preserving interoperability with standard AAL2.
Advanced telecommunication services have to be carefully designed in order to meet the various Quality of Service requirements of a probably very high number of end-users. Due to the enormous data management problems ...

This book constitutes the joint refereed proceedings of the 12 International conference on nextgeneration Teletraffic and Wired/Wireless Advanced Networking, NEW2AN, and the 5th conference on Internet of Things and Smart Spaces, ruSMART 2012, held in St. Petersburg, Russia, in August 2012.
The total of 42 papers was carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in this book. The 14 papers selected from ruSMART are organized in topical sections named: defining an internet-of-things ecosystem; future services; and smart space governing through service mashups. The 28 papers from NEW2AN deal with the following topics: wireless cellular networks; ad-hoc, mesh, and delay-tolerant networks; scalability, cognition, and self-organization; traffic and internet applications; and wireless sensornetworks. They also contain 4 selected papers from the NEW2AN 2012 winter session.

This volume, LNCS 3961, contains the papers selected from those presented at the International conference on Information Networking 2006 (ICOIN 2006), held in Sendai, Japan. ICOIN 2006 constituted the 20th Anniversary of ICOIN. This year's conference program mainly focused on the field of ubiquitous and overlay networks, and on technology for ad hoc and sensornetworks, mobile networks, transport networks, QoS and resource management, network security, peer-to-peer and overlay networks, resource management, and their applications. In response to the call for papers, 468 papers were submitted by authors from 23 different countries from Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas. Each paper was evaluated by two or three internationally known experts to assure the excellence of the papers presented at ICOIN 2006. To keep within the conference topics, some excellent papers had to be rejected to our regret. After extensive reviews, 141 papers were chosen for presentation in 25 technical sessions. Furthermore, another review of these papers was performed during presentation, and finally 98 papers were selected for printing in LNCS 3961. We expect this will add to the excellence of ICOIN 2006. The papers in LNCS 3961 are categorized into 8 sections: Mobile and Ubiquitous Networking, Ad Hoc and sensornetworks, Advanced Networking, QoS and Resource Management, Network and Transport Protocols, Network Security, Applications and Services, and Peer-to-Peer and Overlay networks, ranging from information networking to applications in nextgenerationnetworks.

Why are the many highly capable autonomous robots that have been promised for novel applications driven by society, industry, and research not available - day despite the tremendous progress in robotics science and systems achieved during the last decades? Unfortunately, steady improvements in speci?c robot abilities and robot hardware have not been matched by corresponding robot performance in real world environments. This is mainly due to the lack of - vancements in robot software that master the development of robotic systems of ever increasing complexity. In addition, fundamental open problems are still awaiting sound answers while the development of new robotics applications s- fersfromthelackofwidelyusedtools, libraries, andalgorithmsthataredesigned in a modular and performant manner with standardized interfaces. Simulation environments are playing a major role not only in reducing development time and cost, e. g. , by systematic software- or hardware-in-the-loop testing of robot performance, but also in exploring new types of robots and applications. H- ever, their use may still be regardedwith skepticism. Seamless migrationof code using robot simulators to real-world systems is still a rare circumstance, due to the complexity of robot, world, sensor, and actuator modeling. These challenges drive the quest for the nextgeneration of methodologies and tools for robot development. The objective of the International conference on Simulation, Modeling, and ProgrammingforAutonomous Robots (SIMPAR) is to o?er a unique forum for these topics and to bring together researchersfrom academia and industry to identify and solve the key issues necessary to ease the development of increasingly complex robot software.
