Novel mobile information systems are being developed with the use of smartphones. The traditional applications of wireless sensor networks such as environmental monitoring, health care, and transportation are being realized by many mobile social network applications. Smartphones forward various onboard sensor data using a store-carry-forward way to the central repositories over the internet. In this paper, inter contact time distribution of each smartphone user with other users is utilized for efficient sensor data routing. A novel threshold-based approach is used to estimate future interconnection times. Human mobility based Weighted Relaying Algorithm (Hm-WRA) is proposed for routing in opportunistic mobile sensing systems. The proposed protocol performs almost 15% to 20% better compared to an intercontact time based shortest path routing algorithm named CHARON in terms of the data delivery ratio with proper selection of threshold value at each node.

Radio frequency energy transfer and harvesting techniques have recently become alternative methods to power the next generation wireless networks. The global move towards wireless access point (AP) densification has alluded towards the possibility of harvesting the unused ambient RF energy, especially in the industrial, scientific and medical band (ISM), in order to power useful electronic devices which collectively make up the so called low energy internet of things (LEIoT). Radio frequency process heating, microwave oven, medical diathermy machines, cordless phones, Bluetooth devices, near field communication devices, garage door openers, baby monitors and wireless computer devices uses the ISM frequencies. These untapped sources of energy grow more and more as a result of the rapid growth in the wireless communication business hence, there is a need to find a new method and means of collecting the ambient RF energy present in the environment and transforming that energy into electrical power. So backing this need a 2.45GHz rectenna based RF energy harvester for powering sensors in IoT devices is designed. Here a 2.45GHz antenna is integrated with rectifier to form the rectenna. The antenna consists of a rectangular patch embedded with feed line designed using the inset feeding technique using the EM simulation tool. By proper port matching good return loss is achieved with reasonable gain and diversity (of the antenna), DC voltage and power (of the rectenna) are analyzed from the simulated results.

Named Data Networking (NDN) is a new revolutionary network architecture and a research hotspot of next generation Internet. As a key candidate technology for 5G, D2D communication technology has attracted much attention. Data sharing is the main application of D2D communication, and data transmission is the core of data sharing. At present, there are few researches on D2D data transmission in NDN data sharing. The researches mainly focus on dataset synchronization and distributed file transmission. In addition, the existing data sharing protocol in NDN shows lower efficiency when directly applied to D2D data transmission. According to the main factors that affect the efficiency of data transmission in D-ChronoChat running in NDN, we design three optimized D2D data transmission protocols, and implement the prototype system. In order to evaluate the performance of each protocol and the main factors affecting the performance, we test the transmission delay of each protocol. The test results show that the Multi Threads Batch Packets (MTBP) protocol shows the best performance among the three optimized data transmission protocols. In MTBP, the data transmission rate can reach 6Mbps, nearly 7.4 times higher than the Single Thread Individual Packet protocol (STIP) in D-ChronoChat.

The task of gait-based subject recognition (SR) in ubiquitous sensor environments has become popular due to its wide range of applications in biometric authentication and smart home products. In recent times, a significant amount of work has been done in SR using supervised learning algorithms on datasets having high modality. However, the process of annotation for SR is difficult due to the challenges like privacy and high manual cost, which results in a scarcity of labeled data samples. Also, for the datasets having less modality, the task of SR in a semi-supervised domain is sparsely explored and challenging. In this work, we analyze the effect of these two factors (sparse labels and low modality) which are critical for SR in ubiquitous data. We select two datasets of ubiquitous data that are relatively unexplored in the context of SR. The datasets, namely OPPOR-TUNITY and Smartphone used to perform SR using conventional supervised learning algorithms to benchmark the results. Then we perform extensive experimentation to analyze the effect of the aforementioned factors over the task of SR by studying the variations in classification accuracies. next, we propose our semi-supervised framework for SR based on the concept of pseudo labels to counter the adverse effects of low modality and lack of labels. Experimental results show that our approach offers up to 77% and 98% accuracy on the Smartphone and OPPORTUNITY dataset respectively.

The intra-aircraft communication systems have been largely dependent on wired connectivity in the past decades. This dependency leads to increased aircraft weight, inflexibility in cabin design, and higher maintenance costs. Hence, the increase in reliability and resilience of wireless communication systems in the past decade provides a lucrative opportunity for the aircraft industry. This led to the formation of the Wireless Avionics Intra-communication (WAIC) initiative. WAIC specifies a frequency band and the QoS requirements for the wireless systems in the next generation of aircraft. So, in this paper, a study is performed to measure the QoS performance of an Ultra-Wideband (UWB) based WAIC system for low-data rate communications inside an aircraft. The measurements were performed with different setups inside and outside an aircraft cabin. The impact of realtime propagation conditions like passenger induced shadowing and interference from a Radio Altimeter (RA) is also studied. The measurements demonstrate that a UWB-based WAIC system has QoS that satisfies the WAIC requirements in Line-of-Sight (LOS) conditions and the presence of passenger shadowing. In the presence of interference, the performance can be improved using scheduling to meet the requirements.

A WiFi-based landmark (LM) is a unique point in the physical space that has a repeatable and identifiable WiFi signature as sensed by a mobile device. We present Lighthouse, a new class of WiFi landmarks based on concepts from computational geometry theory that can be leveraged to provide worldwide robust and accurate location based services (LBSs). The proposed Lighthouse landmarks have the nice properties of being abundant in space, hardware-and carry position-independent, can be computed efficiently from a single scan, are confined to a small area of space, do not restrict the user movement path, and do not require any calibration. We show that the positioning error of the Lighthouse landmarks is bounded and present the different extensions that allow it to handle practical situations including the noisy wireless channel, different AP transmit powers, obstacles in the environment, among others. We further present efficient algorithms for extracting them from WiFi scans. We have implemented and evaluated Lighthouse using thousands of surveys collected from different cities worldwide over a six months period. Our results show that Lighthouse's landmarks are one order of magnitude more frequent in the environment compared to the other state-of-the-art WiFi-based landmarks. In addition, the median accuracy of determining the LMs location is less than 3.6 meters. This accuracy is robust over time, different phones hardware, phone carrying positions, and parameters configurations;highlighting the promise of Lighthouse landmarks for enabling the next generation LBSs on a worldwide scale.

In this paper, we investigate the use of highly directional, hybrid antenna arrays in residential Wi-Fi mesh deployments to further improve their performance in challenging conditions where high wall losses are encountered. We also formulate a metric to quantify the quality of the Wi-Fi coverage, and present a deployment procedure to automatically select extender AP locations to maximise such metric. Using the proposed deployment procedure, the performance of highly directional, hybrid antenna arrays in residential Wi-Fi mesh deployments is evaluated through simulations. Compared with the benchmark of omni-directional antennas, we show that using the proposed array increases the areas achieving peak throughput by more than 3 times.

With the proliferation of network connected embedded devices exploding the market, many competing technologies are vying to be the next generation's standard for the Internet of Things paradigm. Among these, LoRaWAN has emerged to be a promising contender with its open platform and open source stack implementations. Since its inception in 2015, LoRaWAN specifications have come under heavy scrutiny from many security researchers, who have discovered several vulnerabilities for the technology. In this paper, we inspect the changes introduced in the newest version of the specification (v1.1), and analyze them to see if the discovered vulnerabilities have been addressed or not. Our analysis shows that while LoRaWAN has made strides specifically on replay attacks and confidentiality, there is room for improvement yet in areas of integrity, availability and authentication. While some of these improvements are possible through implementation guidelines, others may require modifications of the specifications to apply appropriate countermeasures to eliminate the vulnerabilities. Future revisions to the LoRaWAN protocol should consider the body of vulnerability knowledge and countermeasures proposed in literature to create the foundations for a secure and robust IoT network.

The cognitive radio network (CRN) has recently gained attention as a lead candidate for next-generation wireless communication. One major reason 14 this is its promise of alleviating the spectrum scarcity and/or underutilisation challenge. The ideal for achieving CRN's promise is enabling co-use of a given spectrum space by two networks - a primary and a secondary one - either simultaneously or opportunistically, under certain predefined conditions. As remarkable as the CRN's promise is, its main setback is the possibility of poor productivity when the conditions (or constraints) imposed on the users in the secondary network (called secondary users or SUs), by the primary network are stringent. One such constraint, arguably the most limiting and one that is yet to be adequately addressed, is the level of permissible interference to the primary users (PUs) when the SUs are transmitting. In this paper, a resource allocation (RA) solution for heterogeneous CRN that addresses this interference limitation is investigated. The RA is modelled to counteract the limiting effects of the PUs' permissible interference constraint by incorporating an appropriate interference mitigation scheme into the network. The RA problem developed, after reformulation as an integer linear programming problem, is solved using the Lagrangian duality technique and by a heuristic. Comparative results of average data rate and total data rate show significant improvement in the CRN's resource performance when interference mitigation in incorporated, as against when it is ignored.

Internet of Things (IoT) has emerged as one of the key features of the next-generation wireless networks, where timely delivery of status update packets is essential for many real-time IoT applications. Age of Information (AoI) is a new metric to measure the freshness of update. Reduction of the violation probability that AoI of status updates exceeds a given age constraint is of great significance for guaranteeing the data freshness in IoT systems. This work focuses on characterizing the violation probability of AoI in IoT systems where a sensor delivers updates to a monitor under M/M/1 queue with first-come-first-served (FCFS) policy. By exploring the correlation between inter-departure time and system time, the closed-form expression of the violation probability for any AoI constraint is derived. The obtained result induces an accurate characterization of the probability distribution function of AoI. The optimal generation rate of the status update that induces the minimal violation probability is also found. Numerical results show that the optimal update rate can significantly reduce the AoI violation probability for a wide range of AoI constraints.
