Forest fires are occurring throughout the year with an increasing intensity in the summer and autumn periods. These events are mainly caused by the actions of humans, but different nature and environmental phenomena, like lightning strikes or spontaneous combustion of dried leafs or sawdust, can also be credited for their occurrence. Regardless of the reasons for the ignition of the forest fires, they usually cause devastating damage to both nature and humans. Forest fires are also considered as a main contributor to the air pollution, due to the fact that during every fire huge amounts of gases and particle mater are released in the atmosphere. To fight forest fires, different solutions were employed throughout the years. They ware primary aimed at the early detection of the fires. The simplest of these solutions is the establishment of a network of observation posts - both cheap and easy to accomplish, but also time-consuming for the involved people. The constant evolution of the information and communication technologies has led to the introduction of a new generation of solutions for early detection and even prevention of forest fires. ICT-based networks of cameras and sensors and even satellite-based solutions were developed and used in the last decades. These solutions have greatly decreased the direct involvement of humans in the forest fire detection process, but have also proven to be expensive and hard to maintain. In this paper we will discuss and present two different emerging solutions for early detection of forest fires. The first of these solutions involves the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with specialized cameras. Several different scenarios for the possible use of the drones for forest fire detection will be presented and analysed, including a solution with the use of a combination between a fixed-wind and a rotary-wing UAVs. Nano computation and communication research examines minuscule devices like sensor nodes or robots. Over the last decade, it has attracted attention from many different perspectives, including material sciences, biomedical engineering, and algorithm design. With growing maturity and diversity, a common terminology is increasingly important. In this paper, we analyze the state of the art of nanoscale computational devices, and infer common requirements. We combine these with definitions for macroscale machines and robots to define Nanodevices, an umbrella term that includes all minuscule artificial devices. We derive definitions for Nanomachines and Nanorobots, each with a set of mandatory and optional components. Constraints concerning artificiality and purpose distinguish Nanodevices from nanoparticles and natural life forms. Additionally, we define a Nanonetwork as a network comprised of Nanodevices, and show the specific challenges for Medical Nanorobots and Nanonetworks. We integrate our definition into the current research of Nanodevice components with a set of examples for electronic and biological implementations. © 2017, Springer International Publishing AG.

This paper introduces three circularly-polarized (CP) electrically small antennas for emerging wireless applications including wireless power transfer (WPT), Internet-of-Things (IoT), and Device-to-Device (D2D) communications in future fifth generation (5G) systems. First, an electrically small lluygens CP (IICP) antenna operating at L-band frequencies is presented that is facilitated by two near-field resonant parasitic (NFRP) elements, a crossed Egyptian axe dipole (EAD) pair and a crossed capacitively loaded loop (CLL) pair. The HCP antenna is electrically small (ka = 0.73), low profile (～ 0.04λ_0), and has decent cardioid-shaped radiation patterns with a broad half power beamwidth (>120°). It is attractive for many WPT and body-centric wireless sensor network applications. Second, with the rapid development of 5G wireless networks, a corresponding 28 GHz electrically small HCP antenna is reported. The overall size of this antenna is only π (1.5)~2 × 1≈7 mm~3 (ka = 0.94), which can be readily integrated into the various compact platforms anticipated for 5G IoT devices. Third, unlike the above two antennas that radiate uni-directional patterns, a compact 28 GHz omni-directional CP (OCP) antenna is presented for D2D communications in future 5G systems. It is electrically small (ka = 0.95), easy to fabricate, and its performance characteristics cover the entire FCC-specified 5G, 27.5 to 28.35 GHz band.

Wireless sensor network (WSN) is one of emerging technologies in today's scenario. Due to progressive advancement in micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) technology it can easily deployed in harsh environment. sensor node communicates with their neighboring sensor nodes via radio frequencies and has many notable capabilities like self-configurable, self-manageable and monitoring physical phenomenon. Wireless sensor network is gaining popularity due to presence of many characteristics like cheap, cost-effective, reliable etc. along with this it has one major challenge that is limited battery life. To overcome this challenge, many solutions have found till date such as improvising routing protocols, reduction in computation of data, modification in time-stamp synchronization etc but still need more work. In this paper, our major focus is on processing of sensor dataset using various machine learning algorithms. We have managed different range of datasets from hundreds to thousands values and processed with various supervised machine learning algorithms. Simulation result shows that Gaussian Naive Bayes algorithm prominently gives better results than other algorithms in terms of accuracy parameter.

Tactical wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are deployed over a region of interest for mission centric operations. The sink node in a tactical WSN is the aggregation point of data processing. Due to its essential role in the network, the sink node is a high priority target for an attacker who wishes to disable a tactical WSN. This paper focuses on the mitigation of sink-node vulnerability in a tactical WSN. Specifically, we study the issue of protecting the sink node through a technique known as k-anonymity. To achieve k-anonymity, we use a specific routing protocol designed to work within the constraints of WSN communication protocols, specifically IEEE 802.15.4. We use and modify the Lightweight Ad hoc On-Demand next generation (LOADng) reactive-routing protocol to achieve anonymity. This modified LOADng protocol prevents an attacker from identifying the sink node without adding significant complexity to the regular sensor nodes. We simulate the modified LOADng protocol using a custom-designed simulator in MATLAB. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our protocol and also show some of the performance tradeoffs that come with this method.

In this chapter, as proposed in the research proposal, here in this initial research phase a novel model for mobile node localization and tracking has been developed for wireless-interfaced networks for next-generation communication. In this research proposal, "A multi-parametric hybrid cooperative localization scheme for mobile communication Network" has been proposed that can be a potential solution for next-generation wireless mobile communication system functional on the basis of decentralized behavior and self-organizing nature. The proposed system can play the significant role in next-generation communication systems with ad hoc-based technologies such as MANET, VANET, VASNET, and interfaced network (LTE-based) as well as advanced sensor networks (WSNs) to be employed in interfaced communication networks (ICNs), industrial applications as well as in under sea networks (USNs).

Brain-machine interface (BMI) is one of the most important tools in the neuroscience research and neuroprosthetics development. The investigation and development of BMI have achieved significant progress in the past decade. However, several bottlenecks from the electrical engineering perspective still have to be overcome. The next generation BMI system would feature bi-directional neural interface with on-chip neural feature extraction and machine learning. Moreover, the high integration, compact packing and wireless operation would allow the experiments in freely behaving animals. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art designs, summarizes the key design requirements and challenges in a BMI system, and provides insights in both circuit and system level design.

Low-power technologies and communication protocols have enabled pervasive monitoring and the Internet of Things (IoT) for diverse applications. Yet, many wide-reaching use-cases such as shipping and industrial IoT (IIoT) demand next-generation energy-efficiency for wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The enormous growth requirements in this and related fields are not easily met by current state-of-the-art prototypes and comparisons are nontrivial among dozens of differentiating characteristics and impact factors. This work ideates a lightweight densely-scalable network of sensor nodes that must survive on a coin-cell battery for 15 days minimum, sending minute-to-minute alerts for remote analytics and control. This end-to-end solution enables status tracking throughout the shipping lifecycle with a quick-deploy WSN to detect damage/theft in near-real-time. This work contributes a scalable WSN (1) communication protocol, (2) software development kit, and (3) reference hardware. This full-stack system offers a self-configuring, customizable WSN for low-duty-cycle pervasive monitoring in a small, low-cost form-factor.
