With the advent of IT, more and more smart devices can detect several types of environmental conditions and send the data collected or alarm the server system automatically. Such applications, similar to wireless sensor networks are being developed for past few years. With the development of next-generation LTE wireless mobile network, SA working group also developed a related technology, namely Machine Type communication (MTC) in 3GPP. The MTC applications developed by the 3GPP SA working group can also be operated without interaction with humans, and can transmit data directly to the servers located in the LTE core network. However, the popularity of MTC devices may extensively increase due to more and more fancy applications. This may result in LTE core network overload as this would increase the transmission demand drastically. Moreover, RACH congestion situation would become more and more serious due to limited preamble slots in the LTE system. This study attempts to use a hierarchical architecture for grouping MTC devices on the basis of their respective futures. The ACB or EAB combined with group paging mechanisms are used to reduce the probability of congestion. Furthermore, this study also develops a Device-to-Device, D2D, communication approach to further reduce the LTE system load. The performance results have shown that the proposed MTC cluster architecture can reduce system load. © 2016 Taylor & Francis Group.

In recent times Internet of Things (IoT) has gained popularity because of its characteristics in connecting and providing communication among various physical objects and devices enabling collection of diverse data that help making smart and educated decisions which in turn help making human life simple, safe and efficient. Traditional Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are now becoming mainstream data source for IoT applications by connecting to uniquely addressable and routable gateways. Wireless sensor networks are defined as a collection of devices with limited resources like processing, memory, power and bandwidth, deployed for sensing various scalar and multimedia data with diverse traffic types. These data are critical and has to reach the sink in time. The constrained nature of the network with inherent approach of best effort data delivery, not only imposes challenges in reliable transmission of data but also the real time delivery of the data. With increasing use of IoT technology in Smart solutions such as Access control, Real time inventory, Flow optimization, one of the key problems of next generation WSNs is the real-time management and control of network paths within the sensor network so that mission critical data from sensor nodes reaches the IoT Gateway in real-time. In addition, given the myriad type of applications in WSN, imposes the need to segregate and treat data traffic variedly based on the criticality of the application and/or data. Hence there is a need to address the aspects of optimal usage of resources for handling delivery of critical data satisfying its Quality of Service (QoS) requirements within the sensor network. This paper proposes optimal resource reservation mechanism which has resulted in optimal utilization of resources by allocating sufficient resources for prominent and critical data and hence reducing the delay and increasing the performance of the system. © 2016 IEEE.

This research vision and challenges paper focuses on microprocessor design and activity-recognition data processing for medical devices in student-athlete health care. Sports are the second leading cause of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) for people aged between 15 and 24 years. Significant work has been done in the use of sensors to determine the linear and rotational acceleration of head impacts, and their potential correlation to concussions. However, recent studies have shown that subconcussive trauma may be a better indicator of future risks, such as impaired cognitive, motor, and sensory functions, as well as loss of control of emotion and behavior. Therefore, the current reactive and hospital-centered approach where waiting until a concussion has been diagnosed before providing quality care to student athletes is insufficient. Our project will enable a transformation in student-athlete healthcare through the design and utilization of wearable impact sensors to support a preventive, proactive, and evidence-based approach for assessing and mitigating the risk of long-term brain injury. Research and develop activities will focus on a next-generation form-factor xPatch device with an encrypted 915MHz ISM band radio transceiver for secure and efficient real-time access to head impact data, while meeting requirements for transmission range vs. power consumption, receiver sensitivity, data rate, start-up time, latency, capacity, and cost. We will enhance X2 Biosystems's currently existing Injury Management System data platform through development and integration of on-chip data analytics, in addition to real-time recording and secure wireless transmission of impact data. Integration of support vector data machine and other machine learning models will enhance predictive injury analytics based on head impact data. Integration of on-chip machine learning and cloud-based impact classification algorithms will be investigated in order to enhance real-time interpretati

Devising a scheme for tracking a moving object in a WSN is a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a protocol for tracking a moving object by predicting its positions in a wireless sensor network. The proposed scheme uses the locations obtained through estimations for predicting the next target locations. The estimated locations are obtained by computing the locations of the object by sensors lying in the communication range. Extensive simulations are done to evaluate the performance of proposed protocol. The results show that the proposed scheme is efficient and possesses good tracking accuracy.

A reliable wireless communication method for next-generation decentralized control of power distribution systems is described; the method is based on TDMA combined with broadcast and data redundancy. The communication reliability (packet non-arriving rate [PNR] and latency) of the method was evaluated for a case study in a simulation under a realistic condition using Japanese next-generation power distribution system and an experimentally derived radio propagation model. The simulation results show that a certain level of PNR (~10 -1 ) can be rapidly achieved for low data redundancy (n~2). In addition, high data redundancy provides a very low PNR with less latency. For 50-kbps data speed on 920-MHz/250-mW wireless media, up to 20 nodes can wirelessly communicate with a PNR of 10 -2 and 2 s latency to achieve P2P communication and data exchange among all control devices, which means the target specifications for the next-generation distributed control can be achieved with the method.

Laser based free space underwater optical communication is useful in a variety of fields. Underwater sensor networks, for example, are a network of sensors or underwater observatories that collect oceanographic data over an interval of time and send them to the outside world periodically for processing. Current methods, such as acoustic communication are limited in bandwidth; the use of cables such as fiber optic is expensive and not practical for autonomous vehicles and radio frequency waves suffer severe attenuation in water. communication between submerged bodies and space platform is another interesting example. In this paper the design and development of an optical communication link based on 635 nm Laser diode and Silicon photo detector has been discussed. The aim of the work is to study experimentally the performance of the communication between an underwater body and a space platform in the laboratory.
