Device-to-device (D2D) communication technology can significantly improve energy efficiency and offload base station traffic. It has become a new research focus in next generation mobile communications. In this paper, a file-sharing mechanism based on social networks is proposed for the D2D communication system underlaying cellular networks aiming at improving the users' quality of experience (QoE). In the proposed mechanism, all users are divided into several groups according to the documentation requirements. Then the D2D communication links are built within each group by fully considering the social relationships and trust degrees of users. The target files give priority to be shared through the D2D mode. Theoretical analysis and extensive simulation results show clearly that the social relationships can affect the whole wireless networks significantly. Selecting a user with the largest social degree as a central user can greatly reduce the transmission delay, relieve the heavy burden of base stations and then optimize the overall performance of cellular communication systems.

Body Area networks (BAN) are the next generation of Medical monitoring networks. They are being designed and developed to provide health care to patients on the move. However, there are multiple issues that are required to be addressed before they are deployed. The demand for higher data rate in BANs, for carrying the patient's medical information and enabling the streaming of data intensive services, has led to widespread research in this area. This paper suggests a novel orthogonal modulation technique using Hermite pulses that are not only fading resistant, due to their bipolar signaling, but also able enough to provide relatively better performance compared to other available modulation techniques like pulse position modulation. Simulation results depicting the symbol and bit error rate graphs prove the performance and suggest the efficiency of the modulation technique.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is a mature research field that can be tracked back to the 1980, when the United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) started the Distributed sensor Network (DSN) program to formally explore the challenges in implementing WSNs. Since then, WSNs progressed into academia and found home in civilian scientific research. Today, WSNs remains an active research topic with over 64,825 publications in IEEEXplore alone. Recent advances in semiconductor and networking technologies are driving the ubiquitous deployment of large-scale WSNs. These technologies enable a new generation of WSNs that differ greatly from networks studied as recently as 5 to 10 years ago. Today's stateof- the-art WSNs hardware platforms have lower costs and are expected to last longer opening the way into their deployment for any application. However, existing WSNs deployments are limited to experimental few hundred nodes networks. This talk explores the current challenges hindering the real-life deployment of large-scale WSN systems. The focus is to map historical WSNs deployment challenges and their severity against today's network and sensor hardware capabilities. Isolating factors that no longer have great effect on the deployment and maintenance costs of WSNs, is expected to instigate a wave of next generation WSNs deployment. To facilitate this aim, the talk will be focusing on WSN-based protocols/algorithms developed to solve current problems facing the deployment of large-scale WSNs. The talk draw on lessons learned from pilot deployments in different application areas including: space exploration, minerals mapping, heat diffusion, border security and flood prediction and control.

Emerging Mobile Phone Sensing (M-Sense) systems enable a flexible large scale wireless sensing capability and also reduce the need of establishing the infrastructure of Wireless sensor Network for collecting sensory information in the Internet of Things applications. M-Sense has been applied in numerous scenarios including mobile-health systems, environmental monitoring, vehicle ad hoc network, mobile social network, and so on. The drawback of existing M-Sense systems in terms of privacy, trust, less efficiency of participating in multiple sensing networks, has motivated the next generation sensing service provisioning approach. This paper introduces a generic service-oriented Mobile Host Sensing as a Service provisioning framework that allows a mobile device to provide sensing data to multiple parties based on mobile Web services. The proposed framework consists of the hybrid workflow-based control system, the dynamic Utility Cloud service, and the service provisioning scheduling model to enhance the quality of service provisioning. The prototype has been tested on real mobile devices and the details of the performance evaluation are presented.

There is increasing interest from companies on the use of emerging mobile and cloud computing technologies to achieve enterprise specific tasks. Mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, and notebooks can be used to access personalized and enterprise data. Moreover, recent launch of consumer devices such as wearable smart watches (e.g., Apple Watch) requires services and products re-alignment. More importantly, sensor capabilities of these mobile devices can be leveraged with desktops and cloud computing facilities to create next generation mobile applications that can be beneficial to enterprises such as health, agriculture, mining and so on. The challenge however is the limited and unstable wireless mediums through which these smart devices communicate. Due to this factor, data transfer can experience challenges such as high latency, data corruption, communication loss, and performance cost in terms of poor throughput. Hence, this work designed a prototypic system using the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) that seeks to provide speed-efficient data exchanges in a mobile-sensor-cloud ecosystem. Furthermore, a group of performance measurement experiments and conducted to understand the proposed system's performance for wireless networks. Preliminary results suggest CoAP can achieve quick I/O data response time.

Power line communication (PLC) in automotive traction batteries is an innovative technology for next-generation lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery packs. PLC avoids a dedicated wire harness for communication in Li-ion battery packs and helps to reduce weight and production costs. Moreover, PLC enables higher data rates than currently used communication systems, such as the controller area network. The additional data rate is mainly assigned to safety purposes, since Li-ion batteries are potentially harmful for users and the environment. Thus, a fast communication system with low latency must be developed, which works reliably in an unusual environment. Despite the short distances between receiver and transmitter in a battery, the channel shows high attenuation and several resonances. A suitable frequency range must be found in order to ensure a reliable communication link. For this purpose, we analyzed the PLC channel inside a traction battery. We determined the coherence bandwidth and a similarity factor between positions in the battery pack. These results show that a center frequency of 500 MHz is appropriate. In order to verify this, we performed bit error rate (BER) simulations with an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system for different positions in the battery pack. The results suggest that the relation of energy per bit to spectral noise power density must be 9 dB to satisfy all system requirements.

The bandwidth of next generation access networks will require beyond that of current optical access, handling the big data to download of huge data, images, and videos, as well as to upload a large number of sensor data, any time and anywhere. The technical convergence with wired and wireless plays an important role to achieve the next generation access networks. In this paper, we show the perspective on next generation access networks considering the resilience against disasters.

In this paper we discuss the challenges and opportunities that the fifth generation (5G) wireless access will bring to the telecommunications market. 5G refers to the next generation mobile communications that will be implemented beyond 2020, and it is expected to be a backbone of Internet of Things (IoT), linking fixed and mobile devices. 5G should include an innovative set of technologies that will radically change our private and professional lives though applications of novel services, such as remote healthcare, driverless cars, wireless robots and connected homes, changing in that way boundaries between the real and cyber worlds. Advanced technologies will be required to achieve this goal, including utilizing higher frequency bands, advanced multi-antenna and scanning antenna systems, and wireless power transmission and self-powering mechanisms for portable and wearable devices.

Low power wireless sensors, personal wireless hub (PWH) and receivers can reduce the workload of the paramedic staff in a hospital. In this paper, we use multiple PWHs to transfer sensor data to the main central controller, which helps the wireless sensor devices. A well designed multiple PWH assignment and power control scheme can reduce the electromagnetic and in-band interference induced to the other medical devices in the hospital. We propose a framework and low complexity algorithm for interference aware joint power control and multiple PWH assignment (IAJPCPA) in a hospital building with cognitive radio capability. The proposed IAJPCPA is a non-convex mixed integer non-linear optimization problem (NC-MINLP) which is generally NP-hard. We present an efficient PWH assignment and power control scheme for IAJPCPA. We also propose an upper bound on the IAJPCPA that converts the non-convex problem into a convex optimization problem. We examine the effect of different system parameters.

Wireless networked control system (WNCS) is a control system that a wireless network closes the control loop. WNCS estimator, i.e., Kalman filter, estimates the system state according to the observations of sensors. These observations which are from N independent subnetworks are conveyed to the Kalman filter through vacant bands opportunistically with cognitive radio capability of the nodes. We characterize the successful packet delivery probability and study the maximization of energy-efficiency of overall system under the convergence constraint of the Kalman filter by defining an optimization problem. We also find a lower bound on maximum total coverage area. Furthermore, we perform numerical analysis to observe the effects of system parameters such as number of subnetworks, average ON probability of primary users, transmission ranges and densities of sensor nodes and primary users, and false alarm probability.
