Robotic sensor networks (RSNs), which consist of networks of sensors placed on mobile robots, are being increasingly used for environment monitoring applications. In particular, a lot of work has been done on simultaneous localization and mapping of the robots, and optimal sensor placement for environment state estimation(1). The deployment of RSNs, however, remains challenging in harsh environments where the RSNs have to deal with significant perturbations in the forms of wind gusts, turbulent water flows, sand storms, or blizzards that disrupt inter-robot communication and individual robot stability. Hence, there is a need to be able to control such perturbations and bring the networks to desirable states with stable nodes (robots) and minimal operational performance (environment sensing). Recent work has demonstrated the feasibility of controlling the non-linear dynamics in other communication networks like emergency management systems and power grids by introducing compensatory perturbations to restore network stability and operation(2). In this paper, we develop a computational framework to investigate the usefulness of this approach for RSNs in marine environments. Preliminary analysis shows promising performance and identifies bounds on the original perturbations within which it is possible to control the networks.

This paper presents a simulation prototype design for wireless sensor networks (WSNs). It allows the performance evaluation (e.g., packet delivery rate, transmission latency and energy consumption) at high level, but with elaborate models of the hardware and software of sensor nodes. Many hardware components are modeled and the IEEE 802.15.4 standard is implemented. The prototype uses a clock based synchronization mechanism to support simulations with cycle accurate communication and approximate time computation. The performances have been compared with NS-3 and we find that the similar result (deviation less than 5%) at the same abstraction level, and tow time faster than NS-3. Moreover, with a hardware and software co-simulation feature, we have more detailed modeling of sensor nodes. © 2014 IEEE.

Recently, WSNs have been widely recognized as a promising technology that can enhance various aspects of today’s electric power systems, including generation, delivery,and utilization, making them a vital component of the next-generation electric power system, the smart ***, harsh and complex environments pose great challenges in the reliability of WSN communications in smart-grid applications. Malicious nodes may attack the grid network through information tamper, ID spoofing, message stealing etc., to make the network fail or unavailable. In addition, since a great many energy is consumed by the malicious nodes, a grid network may rapidly die due to energy leaking. In this paper, to address above issues, a clustering scheme based on nodal belief evaluation is proposed in smart grid sensor networks to enhance the security and improve the energy efficiency. Numerical results show that our proposed algorithm could outperform traditional clustering schemes in WSNs in terms of network lifetime and packets drop ratio.

Energy efficient protocol design for Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is a very challenging task because of limited battery capacity of nodes. This necessity for energy efficient operation of a WSN has prompted the development of new protocols in all layers of the communication stack. Layer-wise utilization of densely deployed nodes to effectively prolong the overall network life is presented in this paper. Simulation is done in QualNet 6.1 network simulator. Effective number of layers as well as effective node density over a terrain is also analyzed to achieve energy efficient design. Layering helps the network to work for a long time as only one layer in the network is in action at a time, rest layers are completely sleeping. Also, sensor nodes in ML-MAC (Multi-Layer MAC) have a very short listening time that reduces the energy consumption during communication. The results are used to create a parameter estimator through MATLAB.

Wireless sensor network (WSN) is combination of tiny sensors made up with MEMS technology and has important applications such as target tracking and environmental monitoring. In recent times WSNs becomes more attractive because of their sensing ability, low cost, self-organizing nature in different environments. In this paper we have discussed two existing techniques for data communication such as Normal technique and Distance and Density Based Cluster Selection algorithm (DDCSA) and we find that these two techniques are not optimal enough to save energy in a network. In DDCSA protocols there is a problem of cluster breaking and lot of energy is consumed to reforming clusters. In this paper we enhance the Distance and Density Based Cluster Selection Algorithm (DDCSA) using Geographical Forwarding with Face Routing Technique. Simulation Results shows that our Enhanced DDCSA performs better than DDCSA & Normal technique and gives better results in term of Energy spent, Average delay and Packet delivery ratio.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are nowadays extensively preferred for collecting data in the field of disaster management, military operations, habitat monitoring, medical monitoring, and environment monitoring. The location of the sensor which is sending this data is very important for developing efficient routing algorithms, energy efficient communication protocols, and other Quality of services (QoS). Localization is the process by which the sensor motes in the network can identify their own location in the overall network. In this paper, we analyse Radial Basis Function (RBF) Network for developing localization framework in WSNs. RBF based localization framework is to be analysed for faster speed of convergence and low cost of computation. We present analysis of RBF through probabilistic neural network and generalized regression neural network in this paper. The proposed method can be used for designing cost-effective localization framework.

Last decade saw the development of Wireless sensor networks with multitude of applications built around the sensors. Though most of the issues at protocol and device level remain solved for Wireless sensor networks, there is a growing trend in integration of sensors and sensor based systems with Cyber Physical Systems, Machine-to-Machine and Device-to-Device communication both in infrastructure and ad-hoc modes. The emergence of Cloud Computing, highly intelligent 'Smart' devices and efforts towards 5th generation telecom systems is expected to lead the revolution of a networked world with increased demand for situational awareness leading proliferation of sensors at the edge of physical world. Mounting intelligence built in 'smart' devices, scarcity of frequency spectrum, disruptive technologies and limitations on further reduction in base station size may render base station centric-architecture of today's wireless networks old-fashioned. Due to low data rate bursty nature of sensor data, massive-MIMO antennas, device-centric architectures, smarter devices and native support for Machine-to-Machine and Device-to-Device communication, sensor data originating from these systems and disruptive technologies is expected to grow manifold through passing years. communication and network engineers face an emerging challenge of designing communication and network protocols that can efficiently get integrated with the emerging wireless cellular and computing paradigms. In this paper, we list down these communication and networking challenges and provide our vision for Wireless sensor networks related platforms and enabling technologies of next decade. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are an emerging field of engineering with various applications. The motivation is due to the low power and small size sensor nodes used in the network. It has started to emerge as the next generation wireless standard for Low-Rate Wireless Personal Area networks (LR-WPAN). The IEEE 802.15.4 standard is adopted as a communication protocol for LR-WPAN which supports low data rate, less power consumption and short transmission distance. IEEE 802.15.4 is the basis for the Zigbee enabled WSNs. IEEE and ZigBee alliance have joined hands to develop a complete specification of protocol stack for 802.15.4. The Guaranteed Time Slot (GTS) mechanism provided by IEEE 802.15.4 standard allocates specific time slots to all nodes in the network and makes communication more consistent. This consistency makes the network to enhance their performance. In this paper, the performance analysis of GTS mechanism enabled IEEE 802.15.4 based wireless sensor networks using various routing protocols is done by using QualNet. Performance metrics such as packet delivery ratio, delay and packets dropped of IEEE 802.15.4 based wireless sensor networks are analysed using Location Aided Routing (LAR) protocol. Then the performance metrics are then compared with that of DYnamic MANET On-Demand (DYMO) routing protocol.

Various network architectures are evolved into the next generation wireless system to provide better services, such as wireless mesh networks(WMNs). However, single radio node mesh operating on a single channel suffers from capacity limiting. Multiple radio nodes mesh can obviously improve the network capacity, but the network is susceptible to spatial interference. Smart antennas are therefore employed to overcome such problem in this paper. A multiple-beam with circular RTS scheme is proposed to solve the "deafness" problem, which includes two parts: 1) expanding single interface to multi-interfaces in a node for simultaneous communicating with multiple nodes;2) employing the circular RTS scheme for quick establishing communication with multiple nodes. This scheme is simulated by OPNET 14.5 and MATLAB R2007 a. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme not only improve the network throughput but also solve the deafness problem.
