The new ADL Experience API is an attempt for better interoperability between different types of educational systems and devices. This new specification is designed to link sensor networks for collecting and analyzing learning experiences in different contexts. This paper analyses how the concepts of the Experiences API were integrated in a mobile learning application and how the app uses learning analytics functions based on the collected data for informing the learners about their learning performance, for encouraging them to actively use the app, and for orchestrating and sequencing the learning resources.

The paper describes the organization and management of two wireless eco-systems in next generation wireless communications research and human capacity development. The developed eco-systems have been tested and presented at an international workshop organized by the council for science and industrial research and collaborating universities in South Africa. Furthermore, the possibility of extending such a framework to the regional context to improve wireless communications research, standards, human capacity development and technology innovation endeavours of emerging economies is presented. Finally the paper proposes a technology transfer and innovation framework to convert ideas and new technology solutions in the wireless eco-systems into small scale service and knowledge based industries.

next-generation Wireless Body sensor networks (WBSNs) calls for miniaturization and power-efficient integration for long-term monitoring, real-time diagnostics and patient-centered healthcare solutions. However, state-of-the-art WBSN prototypes remain challenged by stringent power constraints and large form factors. The recently proposed asynchronous compressive sensing scheme suggests an efficient way to improve power consumption by reducing the data volume in energy-hungry radio links. In this paper, we present a modified front-end called Asynchronous Binary Compressive Sensing (ABCS) for WBSNs. A low-cost reconstruction method is proposed that exploits the embedded binary signal structure in the ABCS. By incorporating binary amplitude as a prior, better signal recovery performance is obtained comparing with the traditional approaches. Analyses and simulations with an ECG recording confirm the ABCS front-end outperforms the conventional CS approaches in terms of hardware complexity, power consumption and system flexibility.

As the power dissipation has become one of the critical design challenges in a sensor network environment, nonvolatile memories such as STT-MRAM and flash memory will be used in the next generation sensor nodes. In this paper, we studied an efficient buffer management scheme considering the write limitation of STT-MRAM based main memory as well as the erase-before-write limitation of flash memory for storage device. The goal of proposed scheme is to minimize the number of write operations on STTMRAM as well as the number of erase operations on flash memory. We showed through simulation that proposed scheme outperforms legacy buffer management schemes.

The concept of connectedness, as inspired by Social Networking Service, is a key factor which participates in changing the way people interact with each other over the Internet. On the other hand, connected world as envisioned by the Internet of Things aims to expand the idea of connectivity to include everything in the physical world to a big network called the Internet. In order to realize the integration between the world of connected people and the world of connected devices, intelligence including semantics and recommendation acts as a key factor to expand the basic communication functionalities to include search, discovery, mashup of new services and filtering. We propose a framework to facilitate the next generation of communication between people and devices, and a preliminary prototype including three modules DPWSim, ThingsGate, ThingsChat along with a use case discussion.

Smart grid (SG) is the next generation electrical power grid which will provide reliable, efficient and secure energy generation and distribution. To achieve these goals, data such as smart meter (SM) information will be sent to the control center for analysis and decision-making. However, the existing data backhaul network has limited coverage and data rates, is inflexible, and has low reliability. In this paper, a new architecture for the SG data backhaul network is proposed to improve both the coverage and reliability. Power consumption and other information is sent by the SMs to a data aggregation point (DAP) via a wireless mesh network to support SG requirements such as self-healing and throughput. The DAPs employ cooperative communications to transmit this data to the control center. This improves the coverage and reliability of the backhaul network which results in better power supply decisions at the control center.

Due to the attractive characteristics of high capacity, high-speed, wide coverage and low transmission power, Wireless Mesh networks become the ideal choice for the next-generation wireless communication systems. However, the network congestion of WMNs deteriorates the quality of service provided to end users. Game theory optimization model is a novel modeling tool for the study of multiple entities and the interaction between them. On the other hand, cross-layer design is shown to be practical for optimizing the performance of network communications. Therefore, a combination of the game theory and cross-layer optimization, named cross-layer game optimization, is proposed to reduce network congestion in WMNs. In this paper, the network congestion control in the transport layer and multi-path flow assignment in the network layer of WMNs are investigated. The proposed cross-layer game optimization algorithm is then employed to enable source nodes to change their set of paths and adjust their congestion window according to the round-trip time to achieve a Nash equilibrium. Finally, evaluation results show that the proposed cross-layer game optimization scheme achieves high throughput with low transmission delay.

Self-management and self-healing capabilities are the keys to Wireless Mesh networks(WMNs). In this paper, a cloud computing based management system for WMNs is proposed, its goals are to optimize the network control for long-distance and large-scale WMNs. The system's objective is carried out on our test bed, the management cloud gathers data from various nodes in WMNs, and creates dynamic situation diagrams which can be used to assess the performance of the whole networks and perform fault predictions, then WMNs can achieve self-management and self-healing.

The inter-region interest data gathering service in vehicular sensor networks(VSNs) can help improve the driving safety and efficiency in *** this paper,based on moving behaviors of vehicles,we divide vehicles into different *** a community,the vehicles usually visit similar regions and have higher probabilities to encounter each *** it into account,we propose a reliable and lightweight opportunistic routing(RLOR) protocol for inter-region interest data gathering in *** RLOR protocol consists of quota-style message replication procedure(MRP) and community-aware message forwarding procedure(MFP).In MRP,one vehicle node sprays its limited message copies to vehicle nodes that have more stable link connections with itself until the left message is ***,in MFP the left message copy is forwarded to a vehicle node that belongs to same community with the collector,or an active vehicle node that may encounter more different vehicle *** results show that the RLOR protocol outperforms other popular routing protocols.
