The collaborative and low-cost nature of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) brings significant advantages over traditional communication technologies used in today's electric power systems. Recently, WSNs have been widely recognized as a promising technology that can enhance various aspects of today's electric power systems, including generation, delivery, and utilization, making them a vital component of the next-generation electric power system, the smart grid. However, harsh and complex electric-power-system environments pose great challenges in the reliability of WSN communications in smart grid applications. This paper starts with an overview of the application of WSNs for electric power systems along with their opportunities and challenges and opens up future work in many unexploited research areas in diverse smart-grid applications.

With the growing number of wireless network standards operating in the unlicensed frequency band and the military moving toward commercial off the shelf technology, the next generation of wireless sensor networks must be robust against unintentional and hostile interference. One method that has gained interest to cope with the increased spectrum use and to combat the interference vulnerability in wireless sensor networks is frequency agile communication. These techniques typically entail spectrum sensing and dynamic frequency channel allocation. In this paper, the energy detection mechanism is used to investigate how the number of frequency channels characterized for spectrum sensing impacts the accuracy of frequency channel selection and how the number of channels characterized affects the achievable throughput. From the investigation, we observed a tradeoff between the number of channels characterized, the number of energy samples used in energy detection, and the achievable throughput.

A Distributed sensor Network (DSN) that can provide access to information anytime, anywhere by collecting, processing, analyzing and disseminating data. Thus, the network actively participates in creating a smart environment. Distributed sensor networks promise to revolutionize sensing in a wide range of application domains. This is because of their reliability, accuracy, flexibility, cost effectiveness and ease of deployment of nodes in topology of DSN. Smart sensors can offer vigilant surveillance and can detect and collect data concerning any sign of machines failure, earthquakes, floods and even a terrorist attack energy efficiency, topology control and fault-tolerance are the most important issues in the development of next-generation DSN. Fault tolerance is the ability of a system to deliver a desired level of functionality in presence of faults in the topology. Topology control as a low level service governs communication among all nodes and is hence the primary target for increasing connectivity and saving energy. In this work, we have proposed two models for fault detection and fault recovery to achieve fault tolerance in topology. The proposed fault detection model is used to detect faults at node level (checking node's energy) and network level faults (link failure and packet error). The proposed fault recovery model is used to achieve fault tolerance by adjusting the topology of the randomly deployed sensor nodes. Finally, we have evaluated the performance parameters for the proposed scheme.

With the growth of different design goals and application requirements, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are receiving sustained attentions in the recent low-cost industrial automation systems. Moreover, Cognitive Radio (CR) technology gives us a possibility to maximize the utilization efficiency of the limited spectrum resources. However, because the wireless devices coexist in the same radio environment, there are harmful channel conflicts among users, and the increasing radio systems causes great contribution to the increasing energy consumption. In order to realize the industrial circumstance, we complete three major works in this paper. First of all, we describe a practical model of cumulative interferences from the entire cognitive radio-based industrial wireless sensor networks (CR-IWSNs). Then, based on the interference model and the interference avoidance purpose, we propose a self-configurable power control scheme to address the communication requirements on both interference temperature and secondary network Quality-of-Service. Finally, Nonlinear Programming is used to model the scheme and a distributed algorithm is given to solve the problem. Several simulations are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed power control algorithm on optimizing the total system throughput and energy consumption. Results show that the throughput could be improved and the energy consumption could be reduced with the guarantee that the users are without interference.

In this paper, we propose a cross-layer design to meet the QoS requirements for smart grids employing the cognitive radio sensor networks for their control and monitoring operations. Existing routing protocols pertaining to QoS support are not able to simultaneously handle traffic of different characteristics present in smart grids. Therefore, considering the traffic heterogeneity of smart grid applications exhibiting diverse QoS requirements, a set of priority classes is defined in order to differentiate the traffic for the respective service. Specifically, the problem is formulated as a weighted network utility maximization (WNUM) whose objective is to maximize the weighted sum of flows service. A cross-layer heuristic solution is provided to solve the utility optimization problem by performing joint routing, dynamic spectrum allocation and medium access. Performance of the proposed protocol is evaluated using ns-2, which shows that the number of flows belonging to each class are served according to their weight fraction with their respective data rate, latency and reliability requirement.

The next generation of wireless sensor networks will monitor critical infrastructure, collect vital signs from patients, and disseminate medical and planning information during emergency responses. In contrast to earlier wireless sensor networks for which best-effort services were sufficient, such systems require predictable performance and high reliability. Failure to meet these requirements may have significant adverse effects. This paper aims at the development of an engineering methodology for predictable wireless sensor networks. A predictable wireless sensor network is a system for which it is possible to check that its requirements are met under reasonable assumptions regarding its workload and network properties. This project enables the development of predictable wireless sensor networks by providing developers with analytical tools to characterize and optimize the performance of sensor network systems. The intellectual merit of the paper includes: (i) Statistical methods for assessing the properties of wireless sensor networks and for provisioning resources to achieve robustness in spite of node failures or temporal variations; (ii) Novel transmission scheduling techniques that ensure a system meets its reliability and real-time requirements; (iii) A new schedulability analysis that bounds network capacity and message latencies under realistic interference models; and (iv) A wireless architecture that instantiates proposed transmission scheduling techniques and the schedulability analysis. In terms of broader impacts, this project will help us to make advancements in our national capability to develop performance-critical wireless systems. The simulation results shown have proved all the considerations made in the paper.

This paper proposes a WDM/TDM-PON architecture using a shared wavelength and a technique to aggregate narrowband traffic to reduce power consumption of the optical line terminal (OLT). The proposed WDM/TDM-PON enables efficient power saving in the presence of narrowband services, for example, those expected in smart communities and sensor networks.

Cyber-physical systems (CPS) have emerged as a cutting edge technology for next-generation industrial applications, and are undergoing rapid development and inspiring numerous application domains. This article presents an innovative CPS application for energy management framework (EMF) towards autonomous electric vehicle (AEV) in smart grid. First, we give a brief overview of CPS research. The enabling technologies and the open research issues of CPS are also discussed. Then we address the wireless sensor networks (WSNs) navigation principle and simulation model of AEV in smart grid, design the communication architecture for EMF to collect status and power consumption demand from AEV and charging stations, and introduce EMF to overcome some issues such as real-time traffic information. Subsequently, the energy-efficient design steps for EMF are proposed and formulated by means of path planning and event-based control technique. Finally, the open research issues for EMF are outlined in brief.

Nowadays, complex network theory has been widely used in different fields. Many models were proposed for different networks such as Internet or World Trade Web. In this paper, we focus on Internet traffic flows and construct flow graphs from complex network perspective. We propose a novel complex network model for the flow graphs. Besides growth and preferential attachment characteristics of BA model, our model also considers three different kinds of edge growth: between two new nodes, between the new one and the old one, between two old nodes. The probabilities of the three kinds of edge added are changing when the graph grows in our model. We analyze the theoretical degree distribution of our model and obtain the power law exponent, which is adjustable. Our simulations show that the degree distribution of our model is close to the theoretical analysis, and our model matches the flow graphs well.
