next-generation networks are witnessing a convergence of wired and wireless technologies towards a ubiquitous computing paradigm. Wireless sensor networks are leading this revolution, but their deployment is delayed mainly because of energy constraints. sensor nodes are typically equipped with non-rechargeable batteries, thus energy consumption must be minimized. In this paper, an energy-efficient communication protocol, compliant with the ZigBee standard, is proposed and validated. In particular, a new algorithm is discussed that efficiently tunes the duty cycle of a node, i.e., the cycling between an awake and a sleep state of the radio transceiver. After a preliminary communication, each node knows the transmission times of its neighbors and thus when it can switch its radio off since it is not going to receive any message. The solution is robust and has low processing and storage capacity requirements. Simulation results have demonstrated substantial improvements in power consumption compared to the ZigBee standard.

Advances on wireless communication and sensor systems enabled the growing usage of Wireless sensor networks. This kind of network is being used to support a number of new emerging applications, thus the importance in studying the efficiency of new approaches to program them. This paper proposes a performance study of an application using high-level mobile agent model for Wireless sensor networks. The analysis is based on a mobile object tracking system, a classical WSN application. It is assumed that the sensor nodes are static, while the developed software is implemented as mobile agents by using the AFME framework. The presented project follows a Model-Driven Development (MDD) methodology using UML (Unified Modeling Language) models. Metrics related to dynamic features of the implemented solution are extracted from the deployed application, allowing a design space exploration in terms of metrics such as performance, memory and energy consumption.

This work focuses on a special type of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) that we refer to as a stand alone network. These networks operate in harsh and extreme environments where data collection is done only occassionally. Typical examples include habitat monitoring systems, monitoring systems in chemical plans, etc. Given resource constrained operation of a sensor network where the nodes are battery powered and buffer sizes are limited, efficient methods for in-network data storage and its subsequent fast and reliable transmission to a gateway are desirable. To save scarse resources and to prolong the life time of the whole network, the lossy data aggregation method can be applied. It is especially viable in the networks where several sensors are measuring the same physical phenomenum and only average values of sensor readings are of interest. In this paper, we present a method for effiecient lossy data aggregation using a network coding technique. We demonstrate that with low communication and processing overhead, a gateway can retrieve data fast from the network and the retrieved values are close to the sample means of the collected measurements. This method requires a special choice of coefficients for linear data encoding: the condition number of the coefficient matrix should be small and close to one.

The next generation surveillance system will equip with versatile sensor devices and information focus capable of conducting regular and irregular surveillance and security environments worldwide. The community of the persistent surveillance must invest the limited energy and money effectively into researching enabling technologies such as nanotechnology, wireless networks, and micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) to develop persistent surveillance applications for the future. Wireless sensor networks can be used by the military for a number of purposes such as monitoring militant activity in remote areas and force protection. Being equipped with appropriate sensors these networks can enable detection of enemy movement, identification of enemy force and analysis of their movement and progress. Among these sensor network technologies, covert communication is one of the challenging tasks in the persistent surveillance because it is highly demanded to provide secured sensor nodes and linkage for fear of deliberate sabotage. Due to the matured VLSI/DSP technologies, affordable COTS of UWB technology with noise-like direct sequence (DS) time-domain pulses is a potential solution to support low probability of intercept and low probability of detection (LPI/LPD) data communication and transmission. This paper will describe a number of technical challenges in wireless persistent surveillance development include covert communication, network control and routing, collaborating signal and information processing, and etc. The paper concludes by presenting even-odd-symmetry Hermitian Wavelets while the wavelet width may be shrunk as demonstrated by Kim Scheff, et al. and the intensity reduces toward the ambient noise level in support of covert impulse-wavelet communication. The availability and quality of information extracted from Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) revolutionised a wide range of application areas. The success of any WSN application is, nonetheless, determined by the ability to retrieve information with the required level of accuracy, within specified time constraints, and with minimum resource utilisation. This paper presents a new approach to localised information extraction that utilises the Watershed segmentation algorithm to dynamically group nodes into segments, which can be used as programming abstractions upon which different query operations can be performed. Watershed results in a set of well delimited areas, such that the number of necessary operations (communication and computation) to answer a query are minimised. This paper presents a fully asynchronous Watershed implementation, where nodes can compute their local data in parallel and independently from one another. The preliminary experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach is able to significantly reduce the query processing cost and time without involving any loss of efficiency.

This paper considers the problem of improving the monitoring capability of a sparse stationary sensor network with mobile sensor nodes. The main idea is that the mobile sensors should sample the areas that are least covered (monitored) by the static sensors. Thus, a simple path planning strategy is presented that decides the next point to be visited using only "local" information. For a simplified scenario, the paper derives the optimal path strategy and extrapolates some of the properties of the scenario to a more general instance of the problem. Furthermore, the paper proposes a surrogate metric that can be used in order to determine the optimal searching neighborhood and presents extensive simulation results which indicated that this approach can achieve very good results.

next generation EO/IR focal plane arrays using nanostructure materials are being developed for a variety of Defense Applications including Unattended Ground sensor Applications. Several different nanomaterials are being evaluated for these applications. These include ZnO nanowires that have demonstrated large signal to noise ratio as a wide band gap nanostructure material in the UV band. Similarly, the work is under way using Carbon Nanotubes (CNT) for a high speed detector and focal plane array as bolometer for IR bands of interest, which can be implemented for the unattended ground sensor applications. In this paper, we will discuss the sensor design and model predicting performance of an EO/IR focal plane array that can cover the UV to IR bands of interest. The model can provide a robust means for comparing performance of the EO/IR FPA's and sensors that can operate in the UV, Visible-NIR (0.4-1.8 mu m), SWIR (2.0-2.5 mu m), MWIR (3-5 mu m), and LWIR bands (8-14 mu m). This sensor model can be used as a tool for predicting performance of nanostructure arrays under development. We will also discuss our results on growth and characterization of ZnO/MgZnO nanowires and CNT's for the next generation sensor applications.

EnergyOPAL research focused on algorithms which can enable an energy friendly future mobile Internet. Turning off the electronics of a wireless device is understood to be crucial for saving energy over idle periods. On the other hand, the responsiveness of the wireless network should not be compromised. Each node should try to adapt its power consumption profile to the traffic running through it. If each node is seen as an entity, cooperation among nodes is needed in order to achieve an efficient performance in terms of energy. Scheduling and power control plays a big role in this context. We identify important tradeoffs and provide optimal control as a proposed solution to this problem.
