We present the design of a novel adaptive sampling technique called Exponential Double Smoothing-based Adaptive Sampling (EDSAS), in which the temporal data correlations provide an indication of the prevailing environmental conditions and are used to adapt the sensing rate of a sensor node. EDSAS uses irregular data series prediction to reduce sampling rate in combination with change detection to maintain data fidelity. The prediction method employs Wright's extension to Holt's method of Exponential Double Sampling (EDS) coupled with a change detection mechanism based on exponentially weighted moving averages (EWMA). The main advantages of EDSAS are that it does not require heavy computation, incurs low memory and communication overhead and the prediction model can be implemented with ease on resource constrained sensor nodes. EDSAS has been evaluated by using real urban road traffic Carbon Monoxide (CO) pollution datasets and has been compared and shown to give better results for performance metrics like sampling fraction and miss ratio. We have also undertaken analysis of the pollution data based on the information received and shown that EDSAS scores over other published technique called e-Sense in capturing the underlying characteristics of the real data.

In this paper a high throughput, low latency, mobility adaptive and energy efficient medium access protocol (MAC) called Mobility Adaptive (MA) for wireless sensor networks. MAMAC ensures that transmissions incur no collisions, and allows nodes to undergo sleep mode whenever they are not transmitting or receiving. It uses delay allocation scheme based on traffic priority at each node and avoids allocating same back off delay for more than one node unless they are in separate clusters. It also allows nodes to determine when they can switch to sleep mode during operation. MA-MAC for mobile nodes provides fast association between the mobile node and the cluster coordinator. The proposed MAC performs well in both static and mobile scenarios, which shows its significance over existing MAC protocols proposed for mobile applications. The performance of MA-MAC is evaluated through extensive simulation, analysis and comparison with other mobility aware MAC protocols. The results show that MA-MAC outperforms significantly the existing CSMA/CA, sensor Mac (S-MAC), Mobile MAC (MOBMAC), Mobility aware Delay sensitive MAC (MD-MAC) and Dynamic sensor MAC (DS-MAC) protocols including throughput, latency and energy consumption. © 2011 IEEE.

Cognitive Radio (CR) promises to provide better spectrum utilization and increase the availability of (on demand) broadband access to the Network of the Future. CR relies on devices that can sense their (radio) environment, understand it, and model it, so that they can exploit the spectrum through appropriate transmission parameters (in the space, time, and frequency domains) that do not interfere with legacy and/or licensed devices using the same spectrum in the same general area. According to the CR paradigm, the use of the spectrum that is not used by primary (licensed) users is opportunistic. Secondary users sense the spectrum and decide to use it on their own, possibly following additional rules and protocols. Because multiple such CR devices (secondary users) can find themselves in the same area and compete for the same spectrum, the question that arises is whether these devices behave ""fairly"" and appropriately. The opportunities are there for competing CR devices to try to grab more resources through the spreading of misinformation and ""impersonation"" of licensed devices.

In order to overcome the shortcomings of the existing multiple access methods in satellite networks, IDMA technique is introduced into satellite communication networks in this paper. IDMA is a multiple access scheme based on CDMA and it supports multiple users with low multiuser detection complexity and provides more and better service for users with limited resources. In the existing literature, the performance of IDMA is mainly evaluated in AWGN channels, while this paper establishes a simulation model of IDMA-based satellite communication system, and then derives the expression of system capacity by taking the mobile satellite communication channels into consideration. Analysis and simulation results show that IDMA method leads to better BER performance and higher capacity than CDMA method in satellite communication environment, illustrating a new solution to next-generation satellite communication systems.

Wireless sensor Network (WSN) is constrained by limited available energy for data communication. Utilization of energy and enhancing network lifetime is a challenging task for the next generation wireless sensor network. In this paper we have designed an algorithm that performs the routing with low energy consumption. We have experimentally optimized the number of clusters that should be formed for escalating the lifetime of the network with provisions made to include equal number of nodes in each cluster. Our analysis and simulation results show that with realistic radio model we have achieved better load balance than several existing protocols, like LBEERA, HDS, SHORT, PEGASIS, LEACH and BINARY. A suitable node deployment strategy was adopted for ensuring wireless connectivity between each node. Moreover we have made simulations in NS-2 which supports our propositions to a greater extend.

Stability region adaptation using transmission power control for transport capacity optimization in IEEE 802.16 wireless mesh networks

Transmission power control in multihop wireless networks is a challenging problem due to the effects that different node transmission powers have across the layers of the protocol stack. In this paper, we study the problem of transmission power control in IEEE 802.16 mesh networks with distributed scheduling. We consider the effects of transmission power control on the link-scheduling performance when a set of end-to-end flows established in the network are given. The problem is approached by means of the stability region of the link-scheduling policy. Specifically, the stability region is adapted using transmission-power control to the paths of the flows. This adaptation enables the flows to support higher levels of data traffic under lower levels of end-to-end delay. To the best of our knowledge, the approach of stability-region-based transmission power control has not been studied before. We propose a heuristic transmission-power-control algorithm for solving the problem of adapting the stability region to the flows. It is shown, by means of simulation, that the algorithm outperforms the transmission power control based on spatial reuse, which is a widely used approach. Also, it is shown that the solution of the algorithm has performance close to the optimal solution for moderate-sized networks, i.e., networks with no more than 25 nodes and 25 flows. The new generation network or the future Internet should treat mobile hosts as first-class objects and allow them to move freely across different networks that use heterogeneous protocols. For this purpose, this paper presents a mobility scheme, designed on the basis of the ID/locator split concept. The scheme provides mobility support from the identity layer, a shim layer inserted between the transport and network layers in the new generation network architecture. Mobility functions are independent of network layer protocols, thus they support mobility across heterogeneous network protocols. These functions are distributed in both end hosts and edge routers so that the scheme provides seamless mobility by reducing handover delay and consequent interruption in communication sessions. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

The future Internet architecture will be comprised predominately of wireless devices. It is evident at this stage that the TCP/IP protocol that was developed decades ago will not properly support the required network functionalities since contemporary communication profiles tend to be data-driven rather than host-based. To address this paradigm shift in data propagation, a next generation architecture has been proposed, the Cache and Forward (CNF) architecture. This research investigates security aspects of this new Internet architecture. More specifically, we discuss content privacy, secure routing, key management and trust management. We identify security weaknesses of this architecture that need to be addressed and we derive security requirements that should guide future research directions. Aspects of the research can be adopted as a step-stone as we build the future Internet.
