EnergyOPAL research focused on algorithms which can enable an energy friendly future mobile Internet. Turning off the electronics of a wireless device is understood to be crucial for saving energy over idle periods. On the other hand, the responsiveness of the wireless network should not be compromised. Each node should try to adapt its power consumption profile to the traffic running through it. If each node is seen as an entity, cooperation among nodes is needed in order to achieve an efficient performance in terms of energy. Scheduling and power control plays a big role in this context. We identify important tradeoffs and provide optimal control as a proposed solution to this problem.

In the last decade, there has been an increase in the number of natural disasters and terrorist attacks that were massive in scale and civilian casualties. In most of these disaster situations, rescue operations have been carried out on large scale. This paper assumes a heterogeneous network disaster recovery scenario and proposes a cost effective and easy to deploy hybrid communication system to achieve rescuers' requirements and cooperation. Designing a new protocol for hybrid network with different access protocols and with mobility and failures poses several challenges. The proposed protocol uses the Inter-Domain Messaging (IDM) framework to achieve the goal. The simulation shows the functionality of the hybrid protocol model (non-IP routing protocol), and maintains routes without the lower layer detection of link breaks.

In end to end message transmission, Single-Hop and Multi-Hop routing algorithms are the most common solutions available. Unfortunately, they are not optimal when implemented alone; therefore the answer is to find harmony between them. Nodes using Single-hop algorithms consume large amounts of energy as a result of sending the information through one hop distance, multi-hopping towards the destination might solve this problem but creates energy holes in the nodes widely used. The goal of this work is to balance the energy consumption among the sensor nodes, by implementing an adjustable transmission range routing algorithm based on sensor's position information and using long-hop communication. Our proposed algorithm, Adjustable Range of Transmission or “ART” which is a routing implementation developed that protects energy holes. It benefits from the aforementioned algorithms by finding a balanced point between them. ART utilizes Long-Hop Routing to send information to the Base Station “BS”, over smaller number of longer hops. This is achieved by adjusting its transmission range power based on its position among nodes in the WSN.

In this talk, inkjet-printed structures on paper and other polymer substrates are discussed as means for low-cost mass-production of next generation wireless devices and Wireless sensor Nodes. Three sample prototypes are outlined. The first system demonstrates a gas sensing prototype for home land security applications, where printed carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are utilized to sense ammonia gas traces. The second system demonstrates the potential of using printed electronics in producing low-cost location-finding systems for health-care applications. The third prototype shows the feasibility of using the printed technology for enabling wireless communications in the mm-Wave frequencies.

Recently, we start to see Wireless sensor Network (WSN) solutions on the market, which are mostly based on 802.15.4 standard or Zigbee equivalent. Most of these solutions integrate an 8-bit to 32-bit low power microcontroller, one or multiple sensors and run on batteries. However, business is not yet there massively. Does it mean we need additional innovation to boost market adoption? The aim of this session is to provide the ISSCC audience comprehensive and innovative information. It will allow discussion to understand what new techniques are required for the next generation of wireless sensor systems. This Special Evening Topic session will present current wireless sensor system solutions, and explore what could be the next innovations to come. We will review what changes could be operated at designer level, and which low power design techniques will allow the system to run the extra mile in terms of energy efficiency. MEMS are at the heart of the wireless sensor system, and its integration must be realized at the lowest cost. For this purpose, some heterogeneous techniques for industrial sensors integration on CMOS substrate will be presented. Realization of autonomous Wireless sensor networks seems to be a trend with first announcements at industry level. next generation energy storage techniques will be discussed to enable longer autonomy and easier integration into Wireless sensor Systems. Finally, we will consider innovative solutions for energy scavenging from light, temperature, vibration or even radiofrequency and their power level compatibility with wireless systems.

Cognitive Radio (CR) promises to provide better spectrum utilization and increase the availability of (on demand) broadband access to the Network of the Future. CR relies on devices that can sense their (radio) environment, understand it, and model it, so that they can exploit the spectrum through appropriate transmission parameters (in the space, time, and frequency domains) that do not interfere with legacy and/or licensed devices using the same spectrum in the same general area. According to the CR paradigm, the use of the spectrum that is not used by primary (licensed) users is opportunistic. Secondary users sense the spectrum and decide to use it on their own, possibly following additional rules and protocols. Because multiple such CR devices (secondary users) can find themselves in the same area and compete for the same spectrum, the question that arises is whether these devices behave "fairly" and appropriately. The opportunities are there for competing CR devices to try to grab more resources through the spreading of misinformation and "impersonation" of licensed devices.

Nowadays, Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are appeared to be new and promising solutions for next generation real-time wireless monitoring applications. These WSNs could become a threat if suitable security is not considered before the deployment. However, if there is any loophole in security, that might opens the door to attackers and hence, endanger for the applications. So, user authentication is one of the core requirements to protect WSNs data access from the unauthorized users. In this regard, we propose an efficient two-factor user authentication framework for WSNs, which is based on password and smart card (two-factors). Our scheme provides mutual authentication, enables the user to choose and change their password frequently. Moreover, the new framework provides strong protection against different kind of attacks at reasonable computation cost. In addition, we present analysis of our proposed framework security properties with the existing schemes in terms of overhead cost.

In order to use the electricity resources even more intelligent, efficient and safer, the concept of intelligent home electricity system was presented. Based on the analysis of the requirement of the intelligent home electricity system, the Home Gateway and SPO (Smart Power Outlet) were designed to integrate the isolated WSN (Wireless sensor Network) and the Internet to achieve communication between different networks. The communication model based on SIP/ZigBee which is the combination of the core protocol of NGN (next generation networks) and the technical characteristics of the main communication technology of the WSN was created. SIP extension and two kinds of control algorithms were put forword. The selection of the communication model based on SIP and ZigBee is the first step towards an intelligent home residence. © 2011 IEEE.

Increasing importance of localizing objects in indoor environments is the motivation for many research on localization algorithms. This paper focuses on the maximum achievable resolution for Angle of Arrival as a means to position objects inside rooms using equipment within the field of wireless sensor networks, thus dealing with restricted resources. A clear view on beam forming using antenna arrays is represented and is proven to be useful in Angle of Arrival measurements. The choice of the linear antenna array as most appropriate solution is motivated. A detailed overview of the algorithm, used to calculate the maximum realistic resolution, leads us to draw conclusions concerning the resolution. Depending on the number of anchor nodes and the composition of the antenna arrays, a reference value can be defined to calculate the realistic resolution for all room dimensions.
